4/26/14   1     3     1     2   We had both a great and a terrible experience with Dr. Dahlhausen. After taking our rabbit to our regular vet who had very little expertise with rabbits and thought there was not much they could do with our rabbit, we got a second opinion from D.Dahlhausen. They were able to give him medicine that unclogged his stomach and gave us another year with our rabbit. Flash forward a year and we have a cruise scheduled so we ask if we can drop our rabbit off to be cared for and give him more of the medicine to make sure his stomach is not clogged. They mention that Dr. Dahlhausen is on vacation but they can still watch our rabbit. When we call while on the cruise, they forgot that our rabbit was even in their care. When we picked him up, he had basically been starved and we had to take him to a third vet to get pumped full of liquids and checked out. He died a week later. We have little doubt that they killed our rabbit. People make mistakes...but this was beyond a mistake.May God forgive them RID: 51259

11/27/12   5     5     4     5   I have taken my blue and gold macaw to doc Dahlhausen, for 7 or 8 years now. He has always taken excellent care of him, and has pulled him through a couple of rough times. My husband and I both think the "Doc" and his staff are the most genuine, and caring people you could possibly ask for. Dr. Dahlhausen, has met us with a sick bird at his facility, more than once,on off hours. If you have to wait a little longer sometimes, it's because so many people come from out of state to bring their "fids" to him. I would highly reccomend him to anyone, with an exotic pet. That's my honest experience with this DVM and facility. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Carr and "Billy bird". RID: 38735

4/19/12   5     5     4     5   I have been going to Dr. Bob for 8 years with a ferret, lizard, parrots, rabbit and in all of those they have been wonderful to me and my pets, in illness and in health. I recommend him all the time!! There is a wait to be seen which is the only drawback to this office, but it has gotten better this past year. RID: 33632

8/12/11   5     5     5     5   I have Known Dr Bob since 1984. He along with his amazing staff have been exceptional assets to the avian exotic medical affiliations. As the owner of an Animal Rescue Dr Bob has donated his time and expert assistance on numerous occasions. There are no other Avian specialists so devoted to the health and wellbeing of both thier animal and human clients. RID: 26890

Click to report rating    3/17/11   5     5     4     5   I'm so grateful for Dr. Dahlhausen and his caring staff. They were very reassuring and were able to save our little cockatiel. While out of town she had a prolapsed ovaduct... The emergency vet we went to in Michigan did not fix the ovaduct...they just pushed it back in and gave her some stitches. Dr. Bob hand-fed her, gave her several life-saving injections, treated her for two infections and told us to call anytime to check on her. He is a busy man, so I didn't get to talk to him every time I called, but Vicki was very kind and kept me updated on my 'tiel's condition. It takes us an hour to get there, but it's totally worth it. Our birds are our family and Dr. Bob and his staff treat them like family, too. RID: 23624

Click to report rating    1/25/11   5     5     5     5   Vicki, his receptionist and assistant, was extremely friendly and had a lot of information. Dr. Bob did a very thorough exam on my bird and I was impressed with his knowledge and ability. Since doctors actually are human, I don't expect them to be perfect every time, but so far I'm deeply impressed. RID: 22340

Click to report rating    8/30/10   1     1     1     1   I took my 8 year old, deceased pet chinchilla to the office in June 2010 for a necropsy to determine cause of death. He said it was pneumonia. She had shown no visible signs. I took the remaining chincilla in to make sure she did not have it. The doctor gave her a clean bill of health. I bought a new chinchilla to keep the original one company. Within nine days of her being at my house she had died. I took the second deceased chinchilla in to have a necropsy on July 11, 2010. I was told the necropsy would be done within the week. As of August 30, I still have not received the results although I have been charged $85 for the necropsy. I have called the office numerous times and also mailed a letter, but the doctor does not call me back. I have been charged for a service I have never gotten the results for and I also think my chinchilla that was given a clean bill of health may have been misdiagnosed...otherwise how would the newest chinchilla die within nine days? Click to report rating    7/6/10   4     5     3     5   I've used Dr. Bob for over 10 yrs. He has treated my cockatiel with the same care as a large macaw, as well as an ailing ferret, etc. I have learned a lot from him and know that people travel for over 100 miles to his clinic. He is well known for his research into psittacine diseases; Cinci Zoo also uses him. RID: 18660

Click to report rating    5/19/10   1     3     1     3   I took my 3-year old Blue-Fronted Amazon Parrot (Carlito) to Dr. Dahlhausen for his annual exam. He did extensive tests and blood work on him. He told me that all the tests came back clean, and that he was a very healthy bird. He gave him an injection of Haldol and gave me some medicine to take home and give him for 10 days for a foot problem. 11 days later I heard a lot of flapping and then a loud thud. I ran into the room where Carlito was and found him on the floor. I tried to pick him up and he began squawking loudly like he was hurt. I immediately called Dr. Dahlhausen’s office. The receptionist said he was busy but he would call me back soon. After 30 minutes, I called back on his emergency number and left a detailed message. He finally called back (3 hours later). By then it was too late. Carlito had stopped moving and wasn’t breathing. Sudden cardiac arrest. Perhaps he could have been saved by a more responsive and responsible doctor. RID: 18022

Click to report rating    12/4/09   5     5     5     5   He took great care of all my birds through good health and ill. He helped keep my little parakeet Charley thriving a few precious extra months even though her tumor was inoperable - and kept her comfortable at the end. Any surgeries on any birds are risky, just as any surgeries on any humans are risky. Blaming a vet for not being able to save a critically ill bird is like blaming a surgeon for not being able to save a human patient: they try, but sometimes the wounds are just too deep or the illness too far advanced. Once a bird died in my hand - trust me, it's not something you want to see. Remember them as they were. When my husband said we couldn't afford to keep our three parakeets anymore (he doesn't work & says I make too little $$) Dr. Bob's staff found them a new home. (I often wish I'd kept the birds and got the husband a new home.) I have total confidence in Dr. Bob and wish him and his staff nothing but the best. If I'm lucky & have birds again he'll be their vet, no doubt. RID: 15588

Click to report rating    10/6/09   5     5     5     5   Unfortunately you do see people who try to rate a vet poorly because their pet died. Dr. D has saved many of our birds. Happy, a Red Lored Amazon, has lypoma disease, which is deadly to birds. Dr. Bob spent tireless hours in surgery with him and to this day, over 20 years later, Happy is still having a blast and being a normal bird. He did an excellent job. When the bird flu took my African Grey, he found the disease in the bird and warned the CDC about it. It took 5 yrs and several people dying as well as 1,000's of birds for anyone to listen but he was right. RID: 14546

Click to report rating    5/27/09   4     5     4     5   Dr. Bob is the most kind, caring and compassionate avian vet I've ever known. He takes the time to do all the necessary tests and is a fine clinician and diagnostician. My bird has PDD. He came up with the blood test and x-ray to diagnose it. She has lived with this for over a year, thanks to his treatment. I would never go anywhere else. He is worth waiting in the office for. His costs are no higher, and in some instances, lower, than other avian vets. He has come in on a Sunday for an emergency for me. RID: 12933

Click to report rating    1/22/09   2     3     2     1   I used to use this vet for years, and I finally switched - I'm so happy I did. Dr. Dahlhausen was almost always friendly and attentive, but the staff was not friendly at all. The prices are very high compared to even better avian vets. I very frequently had to wait a long time after driving 45 minutes to my appointment. I dropped my cockatiel off for an "appointment" to have a tumor removed. I was told to come back at 6pm to pick him up and that everything would be okay. I came back at 6pm as instructed and waited in the waiting room for over 2 hours. When I finally demanded to see my cockatiel, I found out he did not live through the surgery. No one but the secretary/assistant personnal talked to me. They wouldn't even let me see my pet! Dr. Dahlhausen never spoke a word to me or told me what happened. They said was busy with other clients. I was very angry and upset to lose my pet and lost all confidence in him. It would have been nice if he could have taken a few min. to talk to me. RID: 11325

Click to report rating    12/1/08   1     5     5     1   NOT RECOMMENDED FOR RABBITS! Cavalier attitude by the vet to my rabbit's eye injury when I brought bunny in for neutering. Vet decided to go ahead and operate and sent me home with a bunny that had stitches but also needed eye drops - even though I could not handle the bunny to give eye drops (he was somewhat wild and hated to be held). This bad decision on the part of this vet LED TO MY RABBIT DYING the next day. Vet's staff also told me to withhold food for 12 hours before surgery to avoid rabbit throwing up , even though it's well known that rabbits don't throw up, and recover better from surgery when they have eaten before surgery. After bun died, the vet seemed compassionate, and told me he'd refund some of my money (bill was $250) but then reneged, saying it wasn't his fault that rabbit died. RID: 10754

Click to report rating    9/30/08   5     5     5     5   Dr. Robert Dahlhausen - the best. I have been using Dr. Bob since 1992, over 15 years ago and thru five birds, a pocket parrot Boomer, an African Grey Alex, a Cockatiel Jorge, a Paraket Thumper and now an Amazon Miss B, in every instance Top Notch Care. Our Afircian Grey Alex succumbed to Wasting Disease after some number of months of Top Notch Care. Dr. Bob did not hesitate to use his, then research stage Vaccines, to try and save him. At this time, the research was in "early stages" and we hoped for the best, the same would be done with a human. Research is Very Important, otherwise, how/where do the "mairacle vaccines and treatments" come from to "save/treat" one of our loved ones. On our last visit to his office on 09-25-2008 for Miss B's wellness check (all was well), Dr. Bob did not hesitate to make sure all was well with Miss B, but fully answered my questions without hurry or rushing us. The person complaining below - Family Emergencies are just that FAMILY EMERGINCIES!! RID: 10162

Click to report rating    9/18/08   5     5     5     5   He had been phoned at home because his DAUGHTER is more important than your bird. My dad is an AMAZING person and more so an AMAZING VET! He was rated the BEST AVIAN VETERINARIAN in the WORLD. I am sorry your bird didn't make it, but my dad had a situation he had to take care of at home. You'd do the same. RID: 10031

Click to report rating    7/31/08   1     1     1     1   Dr Dahlhausen is supposed to be this nationally known avian vet, but he and his office have killed two birds in our house. The first was due to laziness as his breakfast was more important than his patient. He had been phoned at home and KNEW of the situation as he had done surgery on the bird two days before. It died in the parking lot 10 minutes after his office was supposed to open with nobody there. He couldn't even bother to show up at the time his office was scheduled. Fast forward a couple years and a different bird was seen by his office and after a quickie inspection we were given antibiotics and sent on our way. The bird never really got well and after it got worse, we went to a different vet and it was kept overnight and died before morning. We were told there was no way Dahlhausen's office could have run the tests that should have been run as one took two days and they were done in 20 minutes. Don't buy into any hype about this guy...he's bad news for your pet! RID: 9515

Click to report rating    6/20/08   4     4     3     3   DR BOB IS A GREAT RESEARCHER! I used to use him for my main vet for several years. I now I believe I go to a vet with more clinical Avian experience, who's main concern is for my bird and not research. I work and need a vet with hours on Saturdays and able to contact in am emergency. Also he can "fix it" in one or two visits. I still consider Dr. Bob one of the best and would not hesitate to use him to save my bird. RID: 8979

Click to report rating    5/19/08   5     5     5     5   Dr Bob is the best around. He will actually take his time and discuss whats going on with your bird. He will always tell you what you need to do and how to do it to get your bird better. I drive about 200 miles to see him. I used him when I lived in Cincinnati, but i've moved, and no other vet around here gave me the treatment that he's given me. He is the best and I will always use him no matter what i live. His number is 513-576-1990 is anyone has a problem that they think cant be fixed. HE WILL TRY RID: 8552

Click to report rating    6/29/07   5     5     5     5   After one of our cockatiels was hurt and my local vet wouldn't see her as she didn't take appointments on Wednesday. This was an emergency so we called the local bird rescue and they referred us to Dr. Bob(as we call him). It was about an hour and a half drive but he showed up after hours to see our bird and wasn't worried about payment right then as his office staff was not there. On New Year's Day he came in to his office to see our sick bird. We will always take our birds to Dr. Bob. He explains everything and is always friendly and doesn't talk down to us like so many Doctors do. Thanks Dr. Bob for taking care of our flock. RID: 4977
