Click to report rating    12/11/24 DO NOT take your pet here. There are other emergency animal hospitals who will not DRAIN YOU of your savings and every bit of credit you have. The WORST experience of my life happened here. And at the end, they “almost” group cremated my cat when we had specifically told me we wanted a private cremation. My cat was admitted for 4k deposit (estimate of 8k) and a few days later they wanted another 4k (the estimate was now 16k) and a few days later they asked for another 4k (the estimate was now 21k). My cat was very, very sick. I looked doctors in the eyes and they told me my cat was coming home with me. So I kept paying deposits. I am left to hire an attorney and take matters into my own hands to get justice for the wrongdoing of this heinous place. They tested him multiple times for the same things and only at the very end, after my entire savings was drained and every credit card maxed out, AFTER my cat had already been euthanized did they tell me HE HAD CANCER. Click to report rating    5/6/22 This is suppose to be a non-profit organization that profit from the disabled, low income and no income! I visited them on April 8, 2022 because there are no avian vets in Bklyn, a $324 debt to look at a bird to not know if it was an egg or hernia or both. Had to return on Tuesday April 12,2022 to see avian vet received another bill for $386. I explained my income situation referred me to funding. To be funded I need to satisfy a $1,000 debt. They are not too sure what's wrong with the cockatiel estimate bill $4,025 not a final bill.Their pledge:"We strive to provide excellent client service and patient care in all cases.""AMC has established financial assistance programs,to help eligible pet owners who cannot afford veterinary care. Based on financial need, reduced payment or free care may be available."Their employees get a 75% discount and sign on bonus, paid tuition, etc. expecting those with no income or low income to pay for it and borrow money from credit not being able to repay! Click to report rating    3/9/17 AMC's goal is to make as much money as they can & teach vet students who will literally practice & learn on your pets. They will never permit you "to the back". They nearly killed my cat & did an unecessary biopsy that left her scarred with permanent damage. they sent her covered in feces & she went septic right after surgery & denied it. we rushed her straight to another vet that confirmed sepsis & said they misdiagnosed the obvious. had we not gotten 2nd opinion, she would have suffered & died a miserable death. Horrible experience. Also, the vets in neurology dept. are arrogant & incompetent & push tests, drugs. nothing natural or remotely holistic about this place for animals that can't take mediations. You might find some decent vets there like any place but beware if you have an emergency especially in June when all the inexperienced interns are there in the ER (true in any of the 24/7 vet hospitals). Ask to see the credentials of every vet handling your pet's case. RID: 62955
8/30/14 My wife and I have been here a few times with different animals. AMCNY is one of the only places to find "Specialists" in different types of pet care. I have had average (not great) experiences in the past, but yesterday was a bad experience. My cat had to get an ultrasound - $450 for 15-20 minutes of work on an un-sedated cat btw, #ripoff - and apparently the radiology technician manhandled and somehow injured my cat. She has has a luxating patella injury, but it was exacerbated by someone in radiology who did her ultrasound. Today she wont come out and walk around, her leg is sensitive to the touch (which it never was before) and the problem we went there to get answers oabout (vomiting and lack of appetite) well, they had no idea what was wrong. If you have to go here, which I am sure many will, INSIST THAT YOU ARE PRESENT WITH YOUR ANIMAL AT ALL TIMES. The people in the back are obviously not taking the same care you would for your animal, and it’s a tragic shame. RID: 53341
Click to report rating    8/1/13 The Animal Medical Center is a non-profit hospital whose solicitations for donations slogan is, '"Compassionate care for all animals."  They neglect to say, but not for older sick pets, and will not treat emergency pets even if they were just hit by a car, if you do not pay up front.  I have witnessed this personally.   It's a teaching hospital, second to pleading for donations. To compound their lack of compassion and care when the end does come under horrible circumstances there are coverups, obfuscations, lies/or computer glitches regarding dates and times of visits of what happened, followed by perfunctory, sympathy. This is what happened to my "sick older" chihuahua. Undoubtedly, this happened before and is still happening. It's part of this hospital's culture.   This needs to be made public so older sick pets don't have to suffer and can go peacefully to their end. Investigative reporting on the AMC is rare, due to the prestigious Board of Directors? RID: 46028
Click to report rating    1/17/12 Brought my 5 yr old dog to the chief of surgery for ACL tear. We opted to have TPLO surgery for her. From the start after surgery her leg was severely bowed out & we were told this was because she was in pain & would get straight as she healed. We sent her there for physical therapy for 6 weeks - a waste of money since they did not have ONE change in any of her measurements or flexibility. They then told me she may have to have the plate removed through surgery since she was in obvious pain & not healing fast enough & that it was irritating her. 2 weeks later they took another x-ray & said they didn't have to remove the plate & that she was healing fine & this is just cosmetic. Since she was not limping any longer I did not go to another specialist to find out about fixing this, but who knows if it's just cosmetic or will cause further problems down the line. She is severely bow-legged in this leg & got the runaround from them. Don't know if a student botched the surgery... RID: 30628

Click to report rating    2/16/08 My regular vet told me that my puppy had a heart mumer & before he was neutered he needed an echo-he did not refer me to AMC. I went their based upon their reputation. They did the echo & neuter. The price for the neuter & microschip was fair. For a scheduled procedure you pay up front. They neutered the dog and did not microchip. After waiting an hour to pick up my puppy after the surgery, they gave me a bag with instructions no review. Just good luck. When I got home I found out that they gave me meds that they were not supposed to. I spent hours on the phone the next day to fix. They billed for the meds & charged for procedures not performed. They eventually stopped billing me and but never refunded me my money for services not performed. My regular vet microchipped my dog for $90. After the dog came home the incision was irritated. I called AMC & left 3 messages-it took 3 days to respond-I already had taken dog to vet for $55. They are a rip off RID: 7396
Click to report rating    12/30/07 STAY AWAY!!! I have sent 2 of my dogs there for eye issues. After multiple thousands of "bs" tests--- My dog was blind---the orderly gave me my dog and said "GO PAY at counter" --- Well, keep your blue card and shove it. YOU WAIT HOURS and HOURS!!! Staff is ok, but I believe its a revolving door for a lot of new ones. THe hospital received a huge donation, too bad they dont funnel it down to services. Many BETTER places in the area---overpriced--NO CARE---JUST WANTS MONEY!!! RID: 6805
Click to report rating    12/1/07 Redid tests that I had already done a few days before. At an expensive price. Very cut and dry. Don't give you many options. But not the WORST specialty hospital I've been to. But I've been to better. A friend of mine thought the cardiology department was excellent, though the doctors had no bedside manner. RID: 6573
Click to report rating    5/17/07 The Cancer service is excellent. For everything else I go elsewhere. Staff is largely rude, facilities overcrowded, I have waited up to two HOURS after treatment to get a bill(!) and they treat people like animals. Never again. RID: 3977
