Click to report rating    5/30/19 I brought my cat for emergency services. He had become very I'll quickly. After a few hours they told me was a severe diabetic and would require 2 shots per day for life. I told them to stabilize him as I had an appt.with his Dr. They called me twice that night saying he had perked up and wanted to do more test at $2000. $3000. more. I said no. Called me next day...he was perked up...no diabetes probably cancer, pancreatic or bacterial infection. I noticed a oder coming home from his mouth. I was holding him, he was limp and not much response. My vet immediately smelled the odor and told me suspected kidney failure. Body temp was low and pulse faint. From the time I picked up my cat who was supposedly perky to his death was 3 hours. BEWARE BEWARE. Do not allow your loved one to become their Guinea pig. I am devastated. RID: 68076
Click to report rating    5/21/19 DO NOT GO HERE.WORST PLACE EVER. Dog came back bruised and swollen from chin to stomach from getting blood drawn. Now seems traumatized which isn't good for a 11 yrs old dog RID: 68042
Click to report rating    3/12/19 The MSU Vet Hospital has a traveling dentist who does teeth cleanings and extractions on certain days. After my experience, I would NOT recommend him. If you have to have your older dog's teeth done and your vet recommends having it done at a vet hospital (due to age or a health condition that makes putting them under risky), don't use this hospital. They should not be using this guy. Full stop. RID: 67509
Click to report rating    4/17/18 After struggling to control our dog's skin issues and allergies we finally took him to see a specialist. I'll get straight to the point - Dr. Zhou and the entire staff are amazing. Dr. Zhou took his time to fully understand our concerns and also took his time examing Buddie. He actually recommended a different course of action that what we requested and we are so thankful he did. Buddie hasn't looked this good in years and the course of treatment recommended was less invasive and less costly than what we were planning on. We couldn't be happier with the care that Buddie has received! RID: 65970
Click to report rating    2/9/17 WARNING-CULTURE OF EUTHANASIA My cat was euthanized at MSU-Small Animal Clinic based on lies and cover ups. Once the staff sees your animal as weak and depressed (their opinion)they will find a way to euthanize them. MSU-Oncology took my money for chemo treatments for Lymphoma and then after 3 treatments the Oncologist mentioned euthanasia, after I agreed to pay for 5 days in ICU to stabilize her glucose I was asked again to euthanize my cat on her 4th day, when she left ICU after 5 days I was told my cat was in hospice status and not to monitor glucose or hydration (in other words she wasn't worth saving). On the day she was crying out in pain I begged the doctor to help her and he mentioned euthanasia and I said I didn't believe in euthanasia unless there was nothing that could be done. The Doctor went to examination room came out and said he had seen her in ICU, her glucose was normal and used my words against me by saying there was nothing that could be done without performing test RID: 62615
Click to report rating    12/20/16 They killed our beloved 10 month old dog . Not only did they tell us he has to have surgery . They pushed his surger date back three times . Meanwhile charging us for this . After he go his surgery. He threw up and they let him go for almost 24 hours before informing us he was in very grave shape. At 2:00 am we were told to come up and see him he was on a breathing machine and never knew we were there . We had to put him down because they wanted 1000.00 pre day to try and I say try to save him with a breathing machine . This after charging us 3500.00 for surgery he didn't need Are you kidding me. Money is their goal not saving animals . Greed and money no concern on how they treat our pets. Run from this hell hole run get second options. Before you believe this hell hole. RID: 62227
Click to report rating    10/8/16 Took our fur baby in Tuesday morning for a prolapsed urethra which they said would fix with surgery, they also brought to our attention his brachycephalic syndrome and said his quality of life would be so much better if he had surgery to fix it. They told my husband they would keep him comfortable and this is routine surgery, never mention the risk or infections that could happen. He was set to have surgery on Wednesday, that day came and went he did not get surgery as they stated they had a lot of emergencies. So it was set for Thursday morning, get a call saying it was pushed back to the afternoon and then the nurse States to my husband "yeah we where getting worried as your pet hasn't went to the bathroom since you brought him in" so I call up there asking what the heck is going on and the whole reason we had to rush to get him there was because if he stopped using the bathroom he would need a catheter. She knew I was upset the.then Says "oh well we did take him out this morning and RID: 61773
Click to report rating    7/11/16 Not a positive experience; especially given the astronomical expense to utilize this service. The vet had an obvious attitude for reasons unbeknownst to me. Communication was limited / non-existent. Overall, this is not a great place to be when you have the stress of an injured pet. RID: 61080
Click to report rating    9/22/15 My dog was in renal failure and after 3 days my vet suggested we go to MSU. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with kindness and compassion from the front desk up to the critical care staff. We were always updated on my dogs health in a timely manner and were kept abreast of charges along the way. They saved my dogs life and I can't say enough about how wonderful they were to her and to my family. I will always turn to MSU for any major issues concerning my dog. RID: 58486
Click to report rating    3/15/15 My family received a $1,500 bill this week for the care received by my 13 year old papillon who stayed the night at MSU'S emergency clinic last Thursday night. She was having bloody noses. On Friday afternoon, I was making plans to pick her up with my mom. A few hours later, I was told she needed to be there until the next day. At around 10 o'clock that night, I got a phone call that she wouldn't make it to morning. Immediately, my mother and I started driving to East Lansing. We live just under two hours away. We didn't make it in time to say goodbye. But who needs to say goodbye, when the staff can offer you their condolences and show you the snap chats they sent while holding your dog Maybe I'm just bitter that I wasn't there for my dog of ten years and that someone else was the last to hold her, but snap chats about how she was the first patient of their new ICU? Seriously? We took her to MSU because we wanted and expected the best for our dog. Not for her to be treated as a RID: 56278
Click to report rating    6/23/13 Our little dog (5.5 lbs) went there for respiratory problems. We provided videos, and all of his current reports. The resident, who had very poor communication skills, suggested a series of tests, one of which involved a biopsy of tissue behind the nose. She called us to tell us that our dog needed an emergency MRI due to brain swelling during the tests. Before the MRI had completed she came to tell us that a large mass had been found on the front of his brain, which would most likely be inoperable-we were devastated.Less than an hour later she returned to provide us with the results of the test.As she was explaining the MRI she stated it turned out that there was no mass on his brain, but a hemorrhage caused by her during the biopsy. She was removed from the case, a discount was applied to our bill, but because of this injury our dog was never able to recover and was finally euthanized. The director's attitude was basically 'prove we it' by doing an autopsy. We decided to let him rest. Click to report rating    3/9/13 My dog got an infection from her internal stitches two days after being spayed. After seeing some unusual swelling, we took her to the ER vet. The staff at MSU told us our dog had been licking (she had not, we had a cone on her), but this was after they told us the infection was from the internal stitches. They wrapped her belly after cleaning it and running tests, but they did not put a cone on her. Our dog ate the bandage and now they have informed us we will likely have to pay upwards of $1000 to have the bandage surgically removed because it is so large. We found this dog starving on the side of the road 2 weeks ago. She is so sweet we couldn't bear taking her to animal control (she is a pit). Now we are having to decide whether or not we will have to euthanize her because of MSU's gross incompetence in monitoring her while she was in their care and the fact that they already charged us $400 for their emergency services on top of what we paid to have her spayed. RID: 40961
Click to report rating    4/13/12 I waited past my appointment time. I took an hour long trip and missed out on work for nothing. They charge way to much for consultation fee $105.50. My dog has a mass in his mouth they quoted me around $2,000 to $5,000 to have it removed. I went to Mich Humane Society they wanted around $400 to $500. I call back up to MSU to see if the Dr. can call in an antibiotic for my dog and no one returned my call. I tried for three days... hell I figure since I paid their asses that much money they can at least call in some medication. But unfortunately no one called me back. What if this was really an emergency? I guess my dog would be dead. Who ever goes there your just adding on another building for MSU. Don't be fooled RID: 33517
Click to report rating    3/17/12 Brought my dog here at the recommendation of my regular vet. If I had listened to their diagnosis or plan of attack, my dog would have DIED from a bowel obstruction. Took him to another vet the next day and he had surgery for his bowel obstruction. He is still not out of the woods, partially due to us trusting MSU's opinion - the obstruction was in there awhile. With this condition, the day I wasted at MSU mattered :-( RID: 32959
2/10/12 We took our dog there for a bone fusion. He was released 18 hours later. As the student vet went over his release instructions with us she "mentioned" the dog ate one of the bandages, we should watch for a blockage. Then, after talking to our regular vet today, we questioned if the dog should have had a cast or splint. We called the small animal clinic and spoke to a "staff member" She not once asked us our dogs name or our name. Yes she insisted she had all the right answers. She was angry we even questioned what State had done. "We are the best of the best", she said. As I tried to ask a question she kept getting louder and louder and refused to let me say a word. My dog isn't "sick" But shame on her if she talks this way to a family with a very ill pet. We plan on calling the business office and taking this up with the surgeon. We didn't spend 4k to be yelled at over a simple question. I will not return for future medical for my dog. RID: 32140
Click to report rating    5/15/11 My local vet recommended sending my dog's blood work to MSU for analysis since he said they are the premier facility for blood analysis. My vet is the best so his recommendation means the world to me. RID: 25012
Click to report rating    1/21/11 I took my dog here for an emergency visit after he had been hit by a car. They took great care of him, and were always coming into the waiting room to let me know what they were doing. They went over his complete history with me and warned me of other injuries that could come from being hit in the chest by a car. They stitched him up and checked all of his limbs to make sure that he would be okay without getting e-rays which I refused because of being a college student. They sent me home with pain medicine for him and a prescription for an antibiotic that I got filled for free at Meijer. I felt that their service was great, and I even took my dog in before his stitches were supposed to come out because I was worried about an infection. They checked him out again for me and I was not charged. I felt the amount I payed for his original visit was very reasonable. I would recommend this facility to anyone and everyone needing immediate care for an animal they love. RID: 22259
Click to report rating    5/4/09 i brought my cat there for a urinary tract blockage, they unblock him and suggested i leave him there to get a cathater and monitar him. i asked for blood work and antibiotics and an iv.they said no he didn't need it,the next day i brought him back(cat was worse)and asked if he was dieing or going into kidney failor they said no he's just tired take him off the pain meds and he'll be ok.the 3rd. day cat was worse so i brought him to miller animal clinic on saginaw rd.he was going to die from kidney failor they asked for papers from msu to see what they did and they were astonished that they did no blood work and no i.v. and no antibiotics.my cat almost died at msu!!do not take your pets there!! emergency visit $105 msu 3 day stay $2000.00and thats no meds no iv no blood work no anything only monitoring. miller animal clinic emergency visit $35.00 3 day stay $356.00 thats including everything meds,iv,baths,3 day monitoring, cathater, cat living! msu cat would've died! Click to report rating    8/10/08 I took my beloved 10 year old cat to the Cancer Center to have a tumor removed from her colon. While they were in her abdomen, they did biopsies on her pancreas and kidneys because they "didn't look right". I did not request or approve this. After surgery she went into kidney failure, even though all of her pre- surgical blood work was normal. They did not tell me this for 3 days after surgery. I spoke to a student the whole time, never a licensed vet. My cat never came home alive and my $1500 quote was $2400. The surgeon never did talk to me even to offer condolences. I will never take another pet here! RID: 9630
Click to report rating    4/6/08 My wife is a veterinarian and we took our pooch here for radiation treatment. I am thankful the cancer has not returned. I think their medicine is good but their staff, including the vets and top administration is shocking. And they are a teaching hospital. It is so sad that vet students are being trained from the worst client and pet CARE staff that I have ever seen. Like I said, the medicine appears to have worked, but their CARE was atrocious. All they had to do was simply apologize for their mistakes and inconsiderateness and we would have been ok, but after a year of dealing with them, we are through and I am thankful for this site to warn others of my experience. RID: 7946
Click to report rating    4/1/08 these people and this facility is only interested in making the most money that they can, getting repeat consults for more money and to sell more medications, it is totally ridiculous. RID: 7892
