Our cat was taken to Four Paws after he'd spent a few days throwing up and not eating. They kept him for observation for a day-no change-all we could do was take him home and watch. Day 2, after running over $450 of tests, and consulting between 3 staff veterinarians, they determined that his xrays looked strange - if we wanted to take him to an emergency clinic we could, but that it wasn't actually necessary at this point. 5 minutes after they had him at the second place, they informed her that he'd eaten a piece of thread that extended from the back of his throat all the way to his intestines, where it had winded around them and was likely cutting into them at this point. They discovered this by opening his mouth. What the hell they were doing at Four Paws that cost $450 dollars and didn't involve anything as simple as looking in his mouth? Sending him home the first day only allowed his condition to worsen to the point where the surgery he required became much more intensive.
