Its not his fault you failed to give your dog heartworm prevention. And yes, theoretically, they will go away on their own. Its called the slow kill treatment. Dr. Pilat is an average veterinarian with below average prices. He is fully capable of performing basic veterinary care including minor surgery. If your are looking for a specialty vet for specialty services maybe go elsewhere. RID: 54392
Click to report rating    5/27/11   4     4     4     4   My friends, my entire family, & I have used Dr. Pilat for almost 10 yrs now. We love him. Heartworm treatment is expensive anywhere you go. To me & everyone I know, it's quite clear that he cares about these animals. Money is definitely not the issue considering he is the cheapest vet in central LA. Maybe he cant spend an hour with each client bc he has a lot of others to take care of as well. There is a language barrier there bc he is European, and it may sometimes come off as rude. But it's definitely just an accent. He has saved at least 5 of my critcally injured/sick animals over the years. Animals that I never thought could be saved. His surgery skills are phenomenal. Beautiful, clean scars from some really extensive surgeries. People need to understand that all animals cannot be saved. Vets arent vets stricly for money. It takes crazy dedication and a love for what you do. We would recommend Dr. Pilat to everyone. And we'll go to him until he retires! RID: 25267
Click to report rating    5/19/11   2     4     4     3   Monetary: ?? Cheap Shots and False Diagnoses! This vet told me that my dog tested positive for heart worms. He quoted a price of 800.00 to treat the heart worms. Luckily, we were not able to pay that much then, and we began using another vet who performed a heart worm test on the dog four years later. The dog did not have heart worms! They do not go away on their own. Use caution with this vet. RID: 25104
Click to report rating    11/15/10   5     2     2     4   The staff is wonderful and the price is right but at what cost. The vet, Dr. Pilat, is horrible. My chocolate lab was very sick with endstage heartworms. Her organs were failing. He suggested I give her the heartworm treatment to kill them. After doing research, there was no getting rid of them at this stage. I trusted the vet and paid 500 bucks to try and save my dog. She ended up dying 3 days later a horrible death that should have been prevented. What I should have been advised to do was to put her down. When her organs began to fail, there was nothing anyone could do for her. It appeared to me that he played on my heartstrings and just wanted my money. I just gave him a second chance 6 years later and he was just as rude and curt as he was before. I went back because the price is right and the staff are wonderful, but beware, he is not in his profession because he loves animals. And he lets it known if you are there anywhere near to time for him to leave. He is worse. RID: 20880
