Click to report rating    12/12/17   5     5     5     4   I feel extremely fortunate to have discovered Dr Caplan and Annex Animal Hospital, who have been taking care of our pets for almost 20 years. Everyone there has been excellent with us over our many visits, and have often gone far beyond expecto look after our beloved pets. We do not have a lot of money, and have always appreciated that Dr Caplan has presented us with practical advice. I have been to vets who pressured me to spend money on unnecessary tests and procedures (VEC), and Annex Animal Hospital has never been anything like that with us. In fact, they are the complete opposite. Incidentally, most tests, cremation, and some other procedures are not usually done in-house by vets, but are instead sent out to labs or 3rd parties. Because of this, the prices are largely set by those 3rd parties and not the vets themselves. This goes for most vets, and not just Annex. Just ask if you are unsure. RID: 65202
Click to report rating    8/10/16   1     1     3     1   VERY UNIMPRESSED. They do not have even the most basic care/respect for animals that I would expect in any vet that I would take my pets to. I went there to pick up some flea treatments for my cats and was told that they wouldn't sell them to me unless I paid for an appointment with one of their vets. Apparently, I should pay $150 (or whatever a vet fee there is) with their vet so that I can purchase a $40 flea treatment, per animal! No concern at all that my cats are in discomfort and require the treatment ASAP, even though I informed them that I was leaving the province the next day and wouldn't be able to bring them in for an appointment for another couple weeks. Again, I can only comment on how unimpressed with the lack of concern for my animals, and that they come across as only caring about money. Although they are the closest vet to my newly moved location, I will not be considering them at all. RID: 61303

6/16/13   5     5     5     5   Absolutely outstanding. I have been taking cats (my own or with friends) to the Annex Animal Hospital for more than 25 years, and I wouldn't consider going anywhere else. Everyone on staff is wonderful, from the people on the front desk to the veterinary technicians to the vets themselves -- keen to share your joy in your animal when things are going well, and immensely and sensitively supportive when things are not going well. When treatment is recommended, the rationale for it is always clearly explained -- the vets are infinitely patient in answering questions and addressing concerns. Telephone follow-up/support is invariably prompt. As for fees, they are very reasonable indeed for the extraordinary quality of care provided. Dr Caplan and his staff are clearly entirely devoted to the well-being of the animals they care for. The best! RID: 43145

5/23/13   1     1     1     1   I have never been to a vet office that cares so little as AAH. They will ALWAYS push the expensive test, extra xray, medicine, food, whatever-they want your money and do not care a thing about your pet. The one thing that these people are good at is preying on the weakness of pet owners who only want the best for their animals - I have left there repeatedly either feeling ripped off or basically insulted for not adhering to their 'preferred' treatment suggestion. They seem to invent new charges and fees and when questioned, they simply state that it is common practice to do this...yet at my current vet and other previous, these charges did not exist. I personally know three people who all felt the same way as I do - STAY AWAY! Heed the bad reviews on this board - these people are unapologetic crooks. As a benchmark, I run a successful business and would never dream of treating people like they do here. I would be more than happy to provide more details. Look after your little friends!  4/18/13   5     5     5     5   I don't know what people are on about with this place- they were helpful and very reasonable when I brought my old and sick cat in. They appeared to discourage expensive treatment if anything, leaving the decision to me. When I decided to go the DIY home-treatment route, they showed me how to administer IV and other things. After all of this I couldn't believe how little I was charged. Very comforting experience. RID: 41851

5/8/12   1     2     2     1   I regret not listening to those who cautioned me against this clinic. After a multitude of costly test (close to $1,000) I’m left with a prescription for an antibiotic which I am not entirely confident my little friend is actually in need of. I appreciate they are running a business but truth is I prefer health providers whose commitment to care is first and foremost. After one visit I inadvertently left without making payment. It was then I think they put me on speed dial. Call after call after call...and they continued to call even after I’d called to apologize for my oversight. When I returned two days later to make good on my oversight and pick up the prescription (exactly when I said I would return) they held the prescription back until my payment was in their hot little hands. I’ve experienced American hospitals and this place gave me the same uncomfortable feeling. I do not trust this clinic with my little friend. I will definitely be going elsewhere from now on. Click to report rating    11/26/11   3     4     4     3   The front office staff is awesome and appointments are easy to get. Some of the vets are great, others less so. They have been tremendously helpful with some of my pets' issues while making questionable recommendations for others. For example, some really push the corn-based prescription diets they sell as the first, best and long-term option for all sorts of things (such as a little bit of tartar build up, loose stool, etc - things that can be dealt with in much healthier ways). Also, different vets at the clinic have also told me conflicting information about a health issue my dog has, which can be confusing and frustrating. Still, the good experiences have outweighed the bad. They have been quick to connect me with specialists when my dog needed more extensive evaluation. No one has ever pushed for invasive procedures unless absolutely necessary. The vets I've dealt with have also been totally fine with raw feeding, which is refreshing. RID: 29392
Click to report rating    10/5/11   4     4     4     4   Would go here again with my cat. Hard to find a good vet downtown. Nice staff and the vet was thorough. RID: 28105
Click to report rating    7/12/11   3     4     4     1   I spent $3,000 on a series of tests and an invasive exploratory surgery because my cat was underweight, with absolutely no results. I'm in the exact same position I was in before they cut open her intestines. I was either taken advantage of or they are incompetent. The only person who I felt truly cared about my cat was the receptionist. Do NOT give them your money too. RID: 26160
Click to report rating    3/8/11   5     5     5     3   The staff are very friendly and pleasant and super playful with our cattle dog puppy. He was getting second shots and needed a fecal test and deworming. It was my first vet experience and online horror stories didn't help but it was a very good experience with other dog owners playing with my puppies and fresh flowers at the front desk.Dr McGregor was sweet, helpful and informative and was good with our puppy. For his 9 week (second shots), a fecal test, deworming medicine and physical we paid a total of $184.00. I would recommend them! RID: 23408
Click to report rating    3/5/11   5     5     5     5   I thank you for all of the kindness that you showed us when we were at your hospital during our difficult time. RID: 23339
Click to report rating    8/3/10   5     5     5     4   This is the most impressive clinic I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with, from diagnosis and treatment by the vets, right through to the medical support by the technicians and customer service by the reception staff. Tests and treatments have only been offered with a comprehensive explanation of the pros and cons (practically an entire science lesson!) and a clear understanding that it is my choice. It is only because Annex provided the most thorough diagnostic science that I decided to forgo further treatment and euthanize my dog. It is not the least expensive nor is it the most expensive clinic, but I am happy to pay a small premium for superior veterinary science and a very humane end to my dog's life. Highly recommended! RID: 19073
Click to report rating    7/24/10   5     5     5     5   I was highly impressed with this clinic. Our cat was suffering from an infection caused by two raccoon bites. We brought him in early in the morning, and they were able to fit him in between two appointments. The vet quickly diagnosed the problem (we weren't sure if it was bites, or an injury from a fall), cleaned his wounds up, gave him an antibiotic injection, gave us oral antibiotics for him to take for the next week, and suggested we bring him back for a feline leukemia vaccination. We were impressed with the fact they fit us in at short notice, treated him quickly and didn't try to get us to spend any more money than we needed to. I highly recommend Dr Sarah. RID: 18934
Click to report rating    7/15/10   5     5     5     5   Wonderful veterinarian in every way. People; if you want quality at a very fair fee in the downtown area...this is your clinic. If you want bargain basement at a cheap fee, these guys are too good for that. RID: 18794
Click to report rating    6/22/10   5     5     5     4   I haven't had any problems with this vet. If my animals need tests, I do them. I have not been "gouged" and would recommend this vet. RID: 18497
Click to report rating    6/13/10   2     3     2     1   I don't recommend this vet at all.My dog has diabetes but is controlled by daily insulin and has been for about two years. they put huge pressure onto me to have a battery of expensive blood tests at least yearly "to see that his meds are correct" I know they are correct because I live with him everyday and he is healthy, happy , eating etc I don't nee to spend big bucks to know his dosage is STILL correct. They have indicated that if I DON'T have these regular tests they won't sell me his insulin !! They have tried to guilt me out and I don't like it..I won't go back and don't recommend them at all, they are keen on keeping up their cash flow. RID: 18370
Click to report rating    6/5/10   1     1     1     1   my two years old westie had small cyst on her neck. I freaked out when I found out and ran to the nearest vet clinic. (annex vet) vet looked at the cyst and said "honestly I dont' know what this is." dumbfounded as I was, he continued, "do you want to remove it?" so I said, I was hoping that you would tell me what this cyst is or have her get tested. he then went to his computer and said testing cost 250ish and removing it entirely will cost 400. therefore he thinks it is cost effective to just remove it. I walked out, still dumbfounded. they charged me 85 dollars for him to say "I actually dont know what this is" ..... so yeah I went to different vet and it was just fatty cyst and it went away in a week. do not goto this clinic unless you want to waste your money and suffer emotional breakdown. RID: 18255
Click to report rating    5/16/10   1     3     3     1   The vet was initially very rude to the other employees in front of everyone in the waiting area. One of our visits was for my puppy's follow up booster shots, she failed to read her own chart and ended up giving him a double dose of ALL his shots again after knowing that he got sick from the first dose. But "Don't worry, I wont charge you for them, I guess" My puppy was instantly affected by the shot, I had to carry him out as he couldn't even stay awake. He was sick for 2 days afterwards. I will never go back to this vet office as I obviously cannot trust them with the life of my animals. This vet is obviously sponsored by Science Diet as she forced us to switch food. After researching the brand I found out it is not at all the best, and you would think the vet would want you to be feeding your animals the best possible food for them. RID: 17968
Click to report rating    2/14/10   2     4     2     1   VERY expensive. They always push for expensive tests and procedures, regardless of whether they are actually necessary for the care of the pet. I don't begrudge a vet making a good living, as I completely respect the years of training they have gone through and the costs of operating a clinic, but this place really just seems to be about profit. The auxiliary staff are often rude. I've switched vets. RID: 16601
Click to report rating    9/8/09   2     4     2     1   My cat was old and very ill, they proposed expensive treatments for her. When I said I couldn't afford it, their response was "How much can you afford?". Clearly all they wanted was my money. The vet also made me feel horrible for choosing to put my cat to sleep rather than persue expensive treatments. RID: 14158
Click to report rating    6/17/09   1     3     3     1   I took my 2 week old kittens there and the vet dropped one of them. Luckily my brother was there and was quick to catch him in mid air, otherwise the kitten would probably be seriously injured being dropped from the height of the counter. The vet prescribed this kitten starter kit even though they were actually feeding just fine on the kitten food I was giving them. This kitten formula gave them both horrible runs and one of them nearly died of dehydration and I had to go to emergency vet on a sunday night, paying over 500 bucks! Needless to say I never set foot in that clinic again. RID: 13212
Click to report rating    6/10/09   1     2     2     1   This place is notorious for pushing procedures and tests that are not required. They charge way more than other local clinics for the same services. They insisted that my Shepherd, who was in getting neutered, should also have hip x-rays wile he was under to find evidence of hip dysplasia (though he was young with no symptoms). So several hundred dollars later, they told me he had mild hip dysplasia, which they could do nothing about (so why the test); this destroyed my chances of ever getting coverage through any pet insurance. The next vet I had told me the entire procedure had been a waste of time and money. RID: 13135
Click to report rating    6/10/09   4     5     3     1   So, the place is pristine. And the vets are nice. However, they operate as a business and not a health care provider. I was told my cat would need a tail amputation and was quoted at over $700. Then they sent me home with some pills to, somehow, get her to take. Having become suspicious at why amputation was suggested almost right off the bat, I took the cat to another vet. He examined her, had her come back, and let us know that she would heal fine on her own, saving us hundreds of dollars. AND he gave her an antibiotic shot, so I didn't have to mess around feeding her the pills. AND seeing him costs half of what it cost to go to the Annex. Skip the Annex. They just want your cash. RID: 13130
Click to report rating    2/5/09   2     3     4     3   After dealing with this clinic for years I now will never go back there. They overdosed my little animal leaving her in a bad state for a day, then said it was the right dose. At least 4 other clinics I called said the dose was twice or three times to high. They also made a bad judgement which caused my faithful pet to die an agonizing death after a very wonderful life. RID: 11487
Click to report rating    11/8/08   1     1     1     1   I brought my 3 year old cat in because i was certain she had tried to eat a wasp, and it had stung her. I brought my cat to the Annex Animal Hospital, and met with a vet. She grabbed my cat, took her to a private room, where i was denied access, a few minutes lated, she brought my cat out[ who seemed relieved of her condition]. the vet told me that my cat probably ate something poisonous and prescribed me very expensive antibiotics. When i returned home, i checked her again, and noticed that the swelling was gone, and she was back to normal, before i even gave her the medication. I'm still convinced it was only a wasp sting, and the vet had secretly removed it in the other room, but just wanted to find a reason to charge me more money. I will never go there again. some vets authentically care for animals, while others are more concerned with filling their bank accounts RID: 10538
Click to report rating    4/29/08   2     3     3     1   This vet is way too expensive. They proposed some treatments for my cat which are in my view completely unnecessary. I have since changed vets and the new vet has provided a different treatment plan. RID: 8315
Click to report rating    10/20/07   4     4     5     4   Great clinic. Most staff (not all) were personable and knowledgeable. When I initially brought my cat in as a kitten, they quickly and effectively took care of his nasty eye infection. When I brought him in for a neuter, they were great about calling me that evening to let me know how he was doing, and calling me after he'd been at home for a day to check on him and answer any questions that may have come up. The staff have been great with him, very gentle, very calming. The facilities appear to be excellent; they appear clean and safe. The vets have always been clear to me as to what was a necessary procedure or test and what was strictly optional or enouraged. Punctuality has been much better than I'd experienced with other vet clinics. RID: 6172
Click to report rating    6/26/07   2     4     4     2   I was initially happy with this vet until my cat developed a serious illness. She had to have surgery to have some mammory tumours removed and i got her home only to notice within a day or so that they hadn't removed them all. She ended up having to go in for another surgery and they were "kind" enough to only partly charge me for it. I have since switched to a new vet. RID: 4870
Click to report rating    6/25/07   1     3     2     1   they pushed unnecessary procedures on my cat. they performed risky treatment on my dog without testing her to make sure that she was healthy enough first and she died of the results. they seem more interested in the money than the animal RID: 4854
Click to report rating    6/11/07   5     3     4     4   comparitively speaking with downtown veterinarians they are midway in pricing. most of the staff is knowledgable. the veterinarian i dealt with was extremely personable. RID: 4489
Click to report rating    2/10/07   2     3     3     2   Nice facility... but staff was NOT very knowledgeable (when asking for Hill's T/D, i was quite rudely asked "UM, did you want wet or dry??". good location. staff at neighboring pet foods store gave too much medical advice. RID: 2798
Click to report rating    1/29/07   2     4     3     1   Staff were very rude and did not know what they were talking about, nice facilities! Very expensive and not worth it, not any diffrent (if anything they are worse) then any other vet I have been to, definatly steer clear of this one! RID: 2273
