I explained that recently a fox had been in our yard killing chickens. I suspected our dog had caught mange from the fox. Dr. Manzer evaluated my dog and didn't think it was mange. She did a skin scrape from one spot, but explained that there were other possibilities for Coco's symptoms. Manzer wanted to do blood work to rule out other issues. Dr. Manzer couldn't identify anything specific. She recommended changing her diet.
We decided to get a second opinion and brought Coco to Best Friends Animal Hospital, where they did multiple skin scrapes only to discover Sarcoptic Mange. Best Friends Animal Hospital explained that the Sarcoptic Mange Mite is often difficult to find. Which is why Dr. Manzer didn't discover it with only one scraping. However, Best Friends said that when a dog has all the symptoms of mange, even if they don't find the mite, which has a very low percentage rate of being discovered, since it is deep in the skin, they treat the dog for mange based on the symptoms.
