Click to report rating    4/5/22   1     3     1     1   Terrible all the way around, from the receptionist to the doctors. Not to mention that the owner is worse. They only care about M O N E Y! That is it . I have read the reviews and I agree they do nothing until you pay the lower estimate… it’s insane that this is not regulated. A physician private practice would never be allowed to treat anyone. They are unethical.and in my opinion should be looked into, extortion is not the way. RID: 70292
6/21/21   1     1     1     1   I've Sent Two Pets To This Hospital And Both Of Them Have Come Back Dead After The First Visit. That's 0 For 2. Essentially A Factory You Send Your Pets To Die.....And They'll Try To Charge You More In The Final Moments, They Probably Caused, To "Save" Him Or Her, Just To Screw You Out Of More Money By Making An Emotional Decision. Very Well Versed Criminals. The Only 24/7, 365 Day A Year, Veterinary Service In The Area....And They Now It....And Behave As Such. There Is An "Allowable" Amount Of Death This Place Can Tolerate In A Given Calender Month/Year And Still Stay Profitable And In Business, So Say Bye To Fluffy If They Are Above Those Numbers When Your Emergency Arises. If You Are Forced To Send Your Pet To This Death Trap Because Its After-Hours At Your Normal Vet, Start Digging A Hole In Your Back Yard Before You Start The Car.You Have A Better Than 50/50 Chance At Keeping Your Pet Home And Administering Self-Care Before Taking Them To This Hell Hole. Click to report rating    8/14/19   5     5     5     5   They were amazing! We brought in our dog who had fallen down the stairs. She was treated with great care and understanding. Yes it took a while but she was taken In Quickly, we waited while they did tests. Dr Sydney Davis ( I think) was so very understanding of the situation. I will always remember her caring handling of everything!! Do not be put off by the wait. They did everything they could and the bill was reasonable. Most important was th immense caring of the staff! RID: 68464
Click to report rating    7/30/18   5     5     5     5   I called to let them know that we were in route with our sick golden. When we arrived, we were immediately escorted into an exam room, interviewed by a competent Vet tech and saw A physician. Our golden was taken for an exam and within a few minutes we were informed what his treatment would be. We waited while tests were done and an assessment made. We were informed of his condition promptly. Shortly after thst we were given discharge information, and his medications. He was returned to us in a better condition because of the fluids and meds he received during his treatment. We left the clinic, very well pleased with the excellent treatment given to our boy. The staff were excellent, friendly, and willing to answer questions. We were very pleased. RID: 66560
Click to report rating    1/20/18   2     3     1     1   Plan on spending a long time waiting. For us it was about 2 hrs. When the doctor finally came to our room she just finished having a cigarette. It smelled like an ash tray walked into the room. The bill was exorbitant and their assessment of the issue was vague. Avoid if possible! RID: 65415
Click to report rating    9/12/16   2     2     1     1   Took my 16 year old beagle there on 9/11/16 because she had gotten mauled by another dog She had a 10 to 12 inch gash in her back Waited in a private room for 1 to 1 1/2 hours before even seeing a doctor to let me know how my dog was doing. The doctor came in and informed me they had to hydrate her to get her blood pressure stable and give her 4 different kinds of pain meds. Was told it would be 750 to 995 to stabilize her and fixed her area that was open.Couldn't get any money and tried to get approved through a company they suggested online Was denied. They told me they couldn't keep her over night or do anything until I gave them the lower end of the estimate. Took her home with a cone on her head and the wound all bandaged up.Going to take her to another vet today for her to be treated and sewed up. RID: 61550

12/27/11   5     5     5     5   Less than one week ago, I brought my 6 year old cockapoo, Rella to Ocean State Veterinary Hospital. She was paralyzed in her hind legs and in a lot of pain. We called ahead of time and were seen immediately when we arrived. The Dr.'s and staff were very good with her and they explained my options and answered all questions I had. I was told that she still had deep pain sensation so her prognosis to walk again was 80 percent. Within 15 minutes I decided to go along with the MRI and surgery. I am thrilled to say that 6 days after surgery Rella is recovering well and just started walking again!! Everyone was so wonderful and I was happy that I received daily phone calls from the Doctor informing me on her progress. I couldn't be any happier with Ocean State Veterinarian Specialists. They saved my baby and she is well on the road to recovery. Thank you so much, you made my Christmas a very merry one!! RID: 30086

9/10/11   2     3     2     1   When my dog began acutely vomiting significant amts of blood, we brought him to this facility. They didn't even do a rectal to see if he was also bleeding from that end., I was told by the vet that regardless of all the blood that he was vomiting, it was a priority to find out why he was vomiting to begin with. Uh.......he wasn't just vomiting bile/partially digested food......it was frank, red blood. The vet also didn't include possible dx other than, "could be a abdominal tumor" I was also told that he would have to wait (they didn't know how long) for an xray. I am wondering if someone brought their family member to the hospital who was vomiting blood like my dog was if they would be satisfied with the way we were treated at this facility. This is the second bad experience I have had with this facility. The other one was years ago when another dog had dka, and obviously care and clinicians at this facility have not improved at all since then. RID: 27503

5/19/11   1     5     3     1   Do not take any pet you care about here. My regular vet is closed at night so we took my cat to Ocean State. They discovered a urinary blockage and said he would need immediate surgery which would cost thousands of dollars my family didn't have. We were told that without it our cat would suffer through the night and die by morning. We made the difficult decision to put him to sleep. Conveniently they make you pay before they begin the procedure. I've been a pet owner all my life and unfortunately have had to put pets down before. Each time it was a peaceful experience as they just closed their eyes and drifted away in my arms. Not with Stewy. He was wide awake when the vet administered the second injection. I'm told they are supposed to wait. He spent his final moments crying, convulsing, and gasping for air. To this day its hard to talk about. My mother was in hysterics. The vet was cold and unapologetic. I had to pay to watch my pet suffer. My cat did not deserve to die that way. RID: 25106

Click to report rating    3/8/11   1     1     1     1   My puppy went in after being hit by a car, left 3500 dollars later with five pages of what my vet called unneccessary tests that Ocean State performs just to run up your bill, and still no real diagnosis. As for my puppy, not a single broken bone, but they had plenty else to say which was later negated by two other vets in the area. Don't waste your money, you would be better off getting veterinary care at a McDonalds Drive Through! RID: 23405

They said my dog had a tumor and an obstruction and he needed surgery.Well he had neither and cost me almost 3000.oo .they wont refund the money and they do not let you speak to the owner, nor do they admit they made a mistake. they are in the business for the money not the animals!  9/25/10   1     1     1     1   We had taken our cat Clifford to Ocean State Veterinary "Specialists" last October with a broken femur. The surgery performed by Ocean State resulted in the bone breaking in two additional places within a day due to the poor judgement on the vet's part to place the pins in the narrow part of the bone. We cntacted Ocean State once again and they had us bring Clifford back for another surgery. Once again the "specialists" at Ocean State had only done more damage to the bone instead of repairing it. When we contacted them a third time, they recommended just amputating the cat's leg. Of course it would be another surgery and like the previous surgeries, please pay first. At this point, I thought it would be wise to seek another veterinarian. We then tried Big River Veterinary Services. Dr Cardosa was absolutely incredible. He was not only able to repair the initial break, but also ALL of the damage that was done by Ocean State Veterinary "Specialists" Thank you Big River !!! RID: 19913

9/7/10   5     5     5     4   I have nothing but good things to say about OCVS. I brought my sick dog there in Aug. After taking xrays and examining her, she was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia in both lungs. Drs. Roy & Stella were very compassionate and did a great job explaining my dogs illness. At 2am the next day, they called me to inform me she had taken a turn for the worse. I returned to the hospital at that time so I could be with her during the euthanasia. This was the first time I had a need to use OSVS. I am completely satisfied with the doctors and the hospital. I am at peace with the way things were handled in the end. RID: 19609

8/10/10   1     1     1     1   This hospital does not listen to the owner. My dog was in grave condition and I told them to call me if this persists at anytime even the middle of night. The next day I see he is still in terrible shape and he looked at me with agony in his eyes. I said to the doctor .:Why wasn't called? I told the doctor on Saturday to put him down if he remained like this. I can tell why they didn't call because the longer the animal suffers ,the more money they make! This establishment is out for the money. They are heartless! RID: 19150

7/22/10   1     3     3     1   I had one-time brought-in an injured bird to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists. I had found the bird outside in my yard and was intent to spend money to see that the bird gets good care and best odds of getting well. The staff at the hospital was initially very pleasant, told me they couldn't accept the bird like it were my pet, but could stabilize the bird till a wildlife clinic would come later come to pick-up the bird. I hadn't liked the idea too well, but had no choice, but to turn-over the bird to their care hoping for the best. When I later called to inquire about the bird the woman I spoke to seemed to take pleasure in giving me bad news! She had said (with a chuckle) that she didn't even know they had this bird, then told me it was hospital policy that she couldn't give me any information on the phone about the bird. I thought their hospital policy in that regard was totally ridiculous. I had just given a $50 donation and they couldn't talk to me on the phone? RID: 18907

10/5/09   3     2     2     1   Babe was admitted for surgery at 9:30 surgeon did a wonderfull job. 13 hrs after surgery dog was walking easily and drinking water. I was convinced to leave the dog since it was so soon after surgery. Returned 24hrs was told there was ademia at site. Asked to take dog home to his vet. Advised that should stay longer. Next day was told that dog had fever and may have pneumonia, 8 hours had passed since they noticed fever, without treatment. Never called me, had two numbers, 3rd day Started iv treatment for pneumonia. 24 hours later when the dog was delivered to the visiting area the pink tounge was gone, he could not breath. after less than a 5 min visit, he arrested in my arms. I have learned is that my dog was sedated with out my permission begining with his first day of treatment because he was very vocal. He tried to walk towards the door even in his sedated state. I wish I had listened to him and taken him home. His last four days Be very careful if you have to go. RID: 14538

8/4/09   1     2     1     1   My cat came in VERY ill with kidney and liver problems (Dr. Lund at City Kitty never told me to take her to a hospital and prescribed something that actually made her much worse- I looked it up) and they charged me $1500 for a litany of procedures. The vet call me that night pretending that she was dying to get permission to let her go. I rushed over and she was already in rigor, which apparently doesn't set in until three hours after death. Apparently all they did was rehydrate her and left her alone to die. They only refunded me $600. Please, please do not take your pet here if you care for them. On top of all that the girls at the front desk were very rude. RID: 13723
Click to report rating    7/20/09   1     1     1     1   ocean state, absolutly takes advantage of people.I had two bad experiences there. bottom line i rather my dog die on the way to tufts, than ever ever take her to ocean state.Ihave been an animal owner for 54 years ocean state is absolutly not quality care i wish the owner could see what goes on there after hours just because your open 24/7 does not mean you are good. Click to report rating    7/12/09   1     3     1     1   Our new lab pup got his leg shut in a door by mistake and seemed in great pain. An after hour visit and after X rays they say the dog needs the bone pinned. After a #3500.00 surgery at OSV. I go do follow up visit to my regular vet, they said the puppy never needed the operation after new xrays. I also went to another vet for his opinion and he said the same, that the puppy never needed the operation. A cast was all it needed. My regular vet also said the operation they gave the puppy should have only cost about $1500.00. I just talked to a friend today who's terrier split it's toe nail and an after hour visit to OSV. They told her the dogs toe had to be amputated for $1100.00. She refused and just asked them to bandage it. They told her dog would bleed to death by morning. After fighting with them they released the dog and billed her $400.00 and they refused to apply a new dressing. Her regular vet cauterised the nail and billed her $60.00. I hear of many unnecessary surgeries there. RID: 13470
Click to report rating    4/28/09   5     5     3     4   I have been very pleased with the (numerous) services we’ve received at OSVS. (One of my cats has multiple chronic medical conditions and a penchant for decompensating on holidays, weekends or at, say, two in the morning.) The radiologist, cardiologist, and ophthalmologist have been wonderful, as have the many general practitioners we’ve dealt with. Paying for specialty services or after-hours care is never cheap, but I don’t think it’s fair to accuse them of being all about the money. On more than one occasion, when a cursory exam has revealed that their services were unnecessary, they’ve sent us away sans charges. A few years ago, when I found a severely injured rabbit (inadvertently interrupted a fox’s midnight snack) they thanked me for bringing the rabbit in and insisted on euthanizing her free of charge. Additionally, they've always given me the option of having non-emergency diagnostics performed by our regular vet to decrease costs when necessary. RID: 12600
Click to report rating    3/26/09   5     5     4     4   We were referred to OSV by our VET after my 9 yr old Boston Terrier had a spine injury. He needed surgery and needed it fast. So we drove 1.5 hrs to RI from CT and once got there - met with a resident surgeon. We were very pleased with his patience, and metholodical process he went about examing our dog and properly diagnosing his condition. They explained exactly the process that would occur and provided us with an estimate. Our dog was admitted and surgery was performed that day to repair C3-4, and fenestration on c2. Our dog stayed there for 4 days and when we picked him up the bill was a little lower than the estimation. We are at about 4 weeks post op and our dog can now walk. ( he couldnt even stand before ) - As of this point it appears the surgery was a success and our dog is on the road to recovery. We are going thru physical therapy with our local vet and he has responded well. We have only positive comments about this vet... RID: 12257
Click to report rating    3/23/09   1     3     2     1   Hope to never deal with again. Sent my dog there to be treated and they did not take my hometown Vet's diagnosis. Wasted a week trying to re-diagnose my dog. Took her home after THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SPENT. She died the next week while my vet was trying very hard to treat the original issue that they let go.. Obviously other people are running into about the same issues with this vet as I have. RID: 12230
Click to report rating    3/15/09   5     5     5     5   My dog was seen for a massive pyo infection. Not only did they see her immediately when I walked in, but when I was apprehensive about the cost of the surgery, they suggested a vet student who was ready to do the surgery. This made the cost affordable for me and my 10yr old lab. She came thru just fine and recovered to continue life for many more months. The vet student did a wonderful job, the vet himself supervised. I consider it a win-win situation for all of us. RID: 12109
Click to report rating    3/10/09   4     5     4     4   I've had to bring my pets there a number of times for emergencies when my regular veterinarian's office was closed. I was pleased each time by the caring nature of all the employees there, from the front desk staff, to the technicians and doctors. Yes, it was a bit pricey, but most people don't tend to think about how expensive it can be to own and care for a pet. If you can't afford to provide your pet with a high quality of care, then you shouldn't have a pet. Owning a pet isn't a basic right. Just like if you had to go to the ER and you didn't have health insurance, it would be a very expensive trip. I can only imagine how much it costs to own and run a facility of this size! If they provided free care to everyone who needed it, they wouldn't stay open. RID: 12035
Click to report rating    2/5/09   1     3     1     1   After spending $4000.00 on surgery for our dog she became ill..I rushed her back in (after she spent almost a week there) they would not run bloodwork until I gave them $400.00 more for antisipated care and my dog died a painful death in there care. Click to report rating    12/29/08   2     3     1     1   Brought my basset hound in after a neck injury that hindered him from walking. The facility did provide us updates but each update was different every time. He went in for surgery and he stayed for about 3 days. We were able to visit him as much as we wanted and again each visit a new vet tech was there with different and incorrect information. They allowed us to take him home while his stomach was inflating even though we asked several times if the size of his stomach was normal. He died as we were bringing him back to the facility. Click to report rating    7/19/08   3     3     3     1   Ocean State..you should be ashamed of yourselves!!! brought our extremely sick dog in on a saturday for emergency care. WE are on a fixed budget and could not afford to treat him. They made us sign a waiver, obviously to clear them of any liability, because we had to take him home since we couldn't afford over $500 to keep him overnight. I am disgusted!!! I hope he lives through nitht and I hope you go out of business. I was in tears, called my mom and was reminded that she had to put her cat down several years ago because she didn't have the money to treat her cat and they turned her away. They handed us a credit application wiith a 25% interest rate attached to it.....I am overwhelmed by the lack of integrity and plain old compassion that exists in your "business"!!! RID: 9375
Click to report rating    7/16/08   3     3     2     1   I personally would not go here again. My 7 month puppy started having febrile seizures back in May. He was brought in at 3am, given IV fluids, and that was it. Total cost, $800! Last month he had a similar episode with a fever of 104.5. They couldn't get it down for 3 days. Then they took a spinal tap which they think the contaminated so they are positive of the results. In the past month, I have been told 3 different diagnosis. He supposedly has either: ehrlichiosis, steroid responsive meningitis, or now, distemper. I am going elsewhere for another opinion as all his other tests have come back negative and his blood was normal. Total cost for nothing, over $3000. Mind you I am a 19 year old who works full time, I still am in debt because of this. RID: 9342
Click to report rating    5/26/08   2     5     2     1   I recently brought in my thirteen year golden retreiver. She was having a bout of gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea). I was charged a "preliminary bill" ( 1/2 of expected costs) my credit card and Dr's license were required and I was charged 750.00. On the itimized list was a charge of 25.00 for one blood pressure reading!! Yes, it's great to know that we can get 24/7 emergency care for our pets, but, I believe that they take anvantage of people and their pets who have nowhere else to go on a Sunday afternoon. 24 hours later and she was still dehydrated. I had to ask one of the techs to feel inside her mouth and let me know if she was still dry. I can't wait to get her out of there and back to my regular vet. The techs were nice and much more informative than the doc's . Reception staff was rude at best. I'm a critical care nurse so I know that my dog was not being properly cared for. I had to suggest an increase in fluids. Nursing 101. RID: 8613
Click to report rating    5/21/08   5     5     5     5   I just came from Ocean State Veterinary Services in East Greenwich and could not be happier with the way my dog and I were treated. I saw the oncologist Dr. David Hunley and he was fantastic!!! He was knowledgeable, patient and kind. My dog has thyroid cancer and he wrote up a thorough, understandable report for me to take home. I had to leave the dog there and Dr. Hunley called me at my work to get my permission to perform extra procedures. He also went over all of my options and the possible outcomes of each. The cost was within the range of any specialty veterinary service that includes x-rays, ultrasound, etc. I am really confident that I received the best veterinary advice and care that medicine has to offer. Thank you Dr.Hunley! RID: 8586

4/17/08   5     5     5     5   Took my old lab (15.5yrs) here upon referral to dermatology specialist. Vet was great. Compassionate and treated dog without being aggressive. Never suggested treatment outside of necessary. Our family was very grateful. Staff at that time was very good. RID: 8153
Click to report rating    2/21/08   5     5     5     5   My dog was attacked by a neighbors larger dog who was loose. We brought him in to OSVS at around 6:15pm with sever lacerations around his neck and shoulder. They took him in right away and were able to stabilize him. They wouldn't be able to operate on him until about 11pm because there were other sicker dogs there. They called us around 2am, only an hour after they said they'd call, this because there was a laceration they hadn't previously seen. My dog is currently still there because the swelling in his keck and throat are keeping him from wanting to drink water. These people are wonderful. They let me see him whenever I want pretty much, and they explain everything that is going on with him. Its so diffucult to see your pet in pain with such injuries, but they make you feel much better by being so kind and caring with them, and explaining things to you. The price means nothing to me. This is a memeber of my family and I'm so glad OSVS is there. RID: 7505

Click to report rating    11/15/07   1     4     1     4   I would like to re-rate this vet (my original was from 2/5/07). This vet has caused me sooo much grief. They say they will do something for you over the phone, but when you get there the story has changed. I was originally working with an internal medicine specialist there and she ignored my pet's symptoms and caused her to get liver damage. Also, it would take her upto a week to return phone calls. Luckily this vet has left the practice. The front desk staff (especially the office manager) can be EXTREMELY RUDE. RID: 6442

Click to report rating    2/3/07   5     5     3     2   This facility is the only 24 hour emergency vet that most vets in the area refer to. I had to take one of my dogs there as she suddenly got very ill very quickly and im glad they were there. It is on the expensive side but you pay for them being there 24 hours a day. I did have to wait a bit too to see the vet but there were also a sicker dog that came in. All is all I would have to say im glad they are there for when you need them and they are state of the art as well. RID: 2563
