Staff is polite; the facility is fine; they were punctual - none of these questions address quality of care. Price is secondary but extremely high when charging people to "learn" (make mistakes) that cost our pets in pain and suffering as well as draining our pocket books. Specifics - Our puppy had surgery and was shaved (understandable). She had such severe razor burns, they scabbed and caused her more discomfort than the actual surgery. Staff (surgery) seemed unconcerned/offered no treatment options to reduce discomfort. Fortunately I have a vet in the family (not in the city) who helped. As well, overmedication resulted in a need for drug reversal - puppy suffered, I was charged - vet college received education opportunity. Surgery was more invasive due to first year resident's inexperience - longer under anesthetic; more drugs; more cost; more healing time. Wow - wish we had other options!!!! RID: 68757
Click to report rating    5/1/19   5     5     4     5   I have taken 2 of my Yorkies here to have leg surgeries and the staff here is top notch. I now own an animal rescue and live in Lloydminster but I still ask to be referred to this clinic. The cost is about 2/3 of the cost it would be if I took my animals to an Edmonton surgeon and I love all the care the animals get. Thank you for all you do! RID: 67968

12/7/17   1     1     1     1   WARNING ` They just want your money and use extortion tactics! My pet was bitten and I immediately brought him to SAC. Vet told me price range. Vet wanted to shave my pet ($50), put him under ($100), clean his wound ($50), and send him to xrays ($100). This was on top of meds which had already cost me $250! Note: cleaning of his wound is done only with saline solution. Using anesthetics risks the pet's life; they make you sign a waiver for. They wanted to do this to pour salt water on him!? I brought my pet home and immediately proceeded to clean his wound. I then dried him up, gave him his meds, and placed him in a comfy cot of his own. I moved food and water for him to reach. I've beed observing him carefully since; he's getting better. The Animal Protection Services were sent to my house two days later! They have received a complaint. I know who made the complaint, it was SAC and its because I wouldn't give them all the money they asked for. RID: 65169
Click to report rating    10/17/17   5     5     4     5   I'm shocked at the poor rating on this clinic. I've been here a few times over the past 4 years and I always had a very positive experience. In August my dog was severely sick with what was believed to be pancreatitis. I thought I was going to lose him. I live in Regina, I love my vets, and they did their best with the equipment they had, but when my dog wasn't improving and needed 24-hour care I took him to Saskatoon. It was the Small Animal Clinic who had the equipment to do proper diagnostics on him and fortunately found and treated the perforated ulcer my vets could not detect. I am convinced I would have lost him had it not been for the Small Animal Clinic. Was it cheap? Nope. Did I expect it to be cheap? Nope. I had excellent treatment from the reception staff and Jasmine Gu, DVM and Robin MacRae, BVMS Resident. They were nothing short of wonderful and they even gave me reports on my dogs progress twice daily. I highly recommend this clinic for serious issues with your pet. RID: 64855
Click to report rating    6/22/17   1     1     1     1   Had a terrible experience today with Dr. Grahn at the small animal clinic. I have a farm dog border collie who is very nervous and barks at new people. As soon as he walked in the room she started to bark at him. He started to get very angry and upset and spent 5 minutes lecturing me about disciplining my dog. I pulled her back and tried to talk calmly to her telling her to calm down, the only technique that has worked best for me.He made the situation so uncomfortable and then left the room. He had a student check her over then came back in the room 5 min later. By this time the dog had completely calmed down and he said that he did not want to look at her. He then said he didn't think her eyes would have changed since two years ago and that likely her eyes will not get worse as she gets older and gave me a prescription.I think it's time he calls it quits. With a loud, rude, obnoxious personality I don't think he is a good fit to be training the new set of veterinarians. RID: 63989
Click to report rating    1/19/17   2     3     1     1   Our dog had all the classic symptoms of a UTI/possible bladder problem and when we brought him in after he was unable to urinate which was a medical emergency at the time it took 4+ hours for him to simply be catheterized (without any sedation or pain killers) and then they started with wanting to do every test under the sun instead of just checking for an infection (urinalysis and blood panel are what we asked for) but they insisted on an ultrasound etc and we did it, left WITHOUT medication and were just told to "watch" our dog. No answers, no nothing. He continued to decline, took him into another vet and sadly was diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma (that should have been seen on the ultrasound or in the urinalysis they took but never tested even though we PAID for it) as well as acute canine dysautonomia. We had to put him to sleep within 12 hours of having him into another vet. Waste of money and complete lack of compassion, over $1500 there just to have them screw it up. RID: 62407

7/27/16   5     4     5     3   I had a great experience with this clinic. Our vet in Regina referred us to Saskatoon to the UofS Oncology Unit for my dog. Although the end results were devastating, we were very pleased with everyone at this clinic. All the various admin. I spoke with were very diligent and helpful. The oncology technician went over all questions I had before making the commute up to the University Clinic. Then both the leader doctor as-well-as the resident vet were caring, informative and knowledgeable. I appreciate everything they did. They handled everything very professionally and followed up with us to ensure our pet was doing well and ensured that all our questions were answered. I would recommend this clinic to others ?  11/11/15   4     3     2     3   My experience was not good because I lost both my reptiles. I questioned the vets decisions and what more I could have done. The procedures scared me because they both passed after. This result lead to a meeting with a pet grievance councilor and the vet to explain everything. I recommend this to anyone.do not let your pets death go unexplained, because even if you signed a form saying you understand the risks, as a owner my experience is your not thinking the way you would normally because it is a tough time. It helped me a lot, for example I did not know my pet was being fed or the care for leaving over night but that was explained. RID: 58925

7/24/15   3     1     1     1   There is very little to no communication with you from the vets. I was sent on a referral from my vet and they did not even acknowledge his requests or even mention them. They told us they would do a quick evaluation of our dog and be right back, an hour and a half later they finally came to talk to us and we never saw our dog again. We were waiting on blood work and they were charging us to "monitor" our dog although all he was doing was hanging out on the ICU floor awaiting results - no treatments were being administered. When we requested to take him home until we had further information they were very insistent that we not remove him from the clinic. We insisted and they brought us our dog and we will never return to this clinic, not likely even if its a matter or life or death. RID: 57795

9/18/13   1     3     1     1   Referred by my regular Vet for a specific test, sent with X-rays and blood work. They decided they wanted to do all their own. Every test but for the one I came for was not performed. They wanted a MRI($1500)and that is were I stopped. It wasn't the money, it was the fact that I was sent there for something specific an this was ignored. So left with no answers, not the test I was referred for and almost $3000 ligher. A few different treatments from my regular Vet and my dog is doing very well. I will never step foot in there again, not even for an emergency. I will phone every Vet in the book before I would go there. RID: 47042

8/11/13   1     2     1     1   Went to take my pet in... These people are heartless... In it for the money only. I'm crying and the veterinarian with blonde hair says that she's gonna charge me for my pet being there... Deciding on whether putting my pet down was the right choice.. This decision isn't easy and this lady was awful about giving me any time..I am in the room saying my goodbyes to my pet and she comes in and disturbs me asking if I need more time... Says its $1500 for a urinary blockage and isn't the least bit caring... I also was asked to sign an agreement which I wasn't dumb enough to because I wanted to speak to the veterinary first regarding costs... This place is very misleading and they do not care for animals or you... Do not trust these evil people RID: 46227
Click to report rating    7/16/12   1     1     1     1   It's too bad this is the only place open for emergencies. I have no problem paying whatever I need to pay to make sure my pet is healthy, however, I feel this is a money gauge. I brought my dog into the clinic two days after she got spayed due to sickness, I told them what kind of medication she was on. They kept her for the night and gave her some fluids and sent me home with meds saying they didn't know what was wrong. I asked if these new meds could be combined with other meds given post spay surgery, the doctor didn't even answer me. I had to call my own vet when they opened and they said it was possible her original meds is what caused the upset. $600 later for no answers, and no thought to the meds she was on. Very impersonal, makes you pay before you can see your pet. Unfriendly and cold. If this is a teaching place, perhaps they should teach some bedside manners. I also had same issues with my late cat and given the option, I would take pets elsewhere. RID: 35677
Click to report rating    7/4/12   1     1     1     1   This was the worst experience we ever had with our animals. For starters everyone was rude. They did not have any acceptable answers regarding the odds of survival for our dog who had a ruptured ulcer. Each vet we spoke with had a different answer with the odds ranging from 10% to 50% -60% chance of survival...a ridiculous difference in opinions. Our dog was clearly agitated and in pain and wanted to be close to us and they were far from understanding and would not let us stay for the examination. There was not a kind word from any one of them and to make it all worse they were abrupt, cold and acted as if we were an inconvenience. They treated our poor sick pet in the same way! RID: 35433
Click to report rating    6/11/12   1     1     3     1   The examining room was filthy, my cat came out with more fur than he started. The resident (Lemetayer) had such poor communication skills and 'owner bedside' manners, it threw our entire household into chaos, cost me hundreds of dollars in vet bills to take my other cat elsewhere so I could get straight answers and also someone my cat wasn't terrified of. Ultimately we lost one cat. Whether it was due to her lack of knowledge or just her inability to communicate her findings and knowledge, i believe she is directly responsible. Needless to say, my other cat will never set foot in this clinic. Between insanitary conditions and my experience dealing with this resident vet I'd go elsewhere. RID: 34908
Click to report rating    1/17/12   4     5     4     5   As a tech student that has gone through the WCVM, I find that people don't seem to realize that this clinic is the only referral clinic in the province and the fees are under what I have seen in Calgary. My clinic has had issues with the reception staff and that is all. The doctors are wonderful and give free consults to other vets that call or email. I guess all I can really say to the people that say the prices are too high is that you get what you pay for. The animals are checked on hourly at a minimum, whereas some clinics leave animals unattended overnight. And if other thoughtless people didn't skip out on their bills and/or leave their pets there for good vet hospitals wouldn't have to demand money up front with emergencies. It is still a business!  8/21/11   5     4     5     5   I don't have any idea what kind of place these people are reviewing, but I have to say I didn't experience any of those horror stories. Today, a sunday, I had to give up a long time friend who was 18 years old as she finally lost the battle of time and had to be put down. When I had to make the phonecall, the receptionist who answered was gentle with her voice and seemed to choose her words so I wouldn't become upset. When I arrived, the receptionist was at her desk and had me fill in the paperwork, while she held my cat and comforted her as best as possible. When it came time, the student doctor gave me the obvious choice of being there or not (which I stayed), as well the doctor asked again to see if I had resolved my choice. The doctor brought her to me, I said my good byes, she administered the medicine gently, and that was that. She did this on her day off, and I couldn't thank her enough. $120 for her to come in is nothing for the compassion and kindness she showed me. RID: 27073
Click to report rating    12/15/10   5     5     4     3   I am a little shocked at the comments on this site. I took my cat to the Arlington Animal Hospital, they charged me $700 just to tell me they couldn't figure out what was wrong with my cat and that it would cost about $160 to put him down. He spent 3 days locked in a kennel and they didn't even do any tests. I took him out of there and to the university and within 4 hours they told me he had a very bad urinary tract infection. They performed lots of tests to ensure there was nothing else wrong, gave me the medication, and sent me off. This is a year later and my cat is better than ever. BTW - the cost of my vet visit here was $330 - (less than half of the other place, and 10x the service, and my cat is alive and well) Well worth the money! The staff were courteous and helpful, and everything seemed clean and bright to me. Good experience for me and my kitty! : ) Thank you! RID: 21427
Click to report rating    5/11/10   1     2     1     1   I have had too many bad experiences at the U of S to mention. I highly recommend you never take your pet there. I have had 2 pets die while in their care. They never contacted me except to send me a bill for cremation services. When I wanted to visit my dieing dog, they would not let me see him. When a specialist saw my female, he was extremely rude, discourteous and abrupt with me plus he was extremely rough with my dog. My husband and I will never go there again under any circumstances. Horrible, considering they are supposed to be a teaching facility. The staff seems to always want to take your pet behind the scenes and not allow you to go with the pet. What is that all about? RID: 17909
Click to report rating    3/24/10   5     5     5     5   I Love the Exotic Department at the U of S. They are only ones really qualified to work with Rabbits. I've usen the U of S for many years and never had a problem. I think things are improving :) RID: 17207
Click to report rating    3/17/10   1     4     1     1   Would never recommend the U of S under any circumstances. As others have mentioned, prices are outrageous and most staff are cold & impersonal. They also don't treat patients until they have a 100% confirmed diagnosis (which means a lot of test$$$, most of which are unnecessary). My initial quote was $700-900...within 24hrs, they requoted me $1500. Pulled my puppy out immediately and took him to Westward where the vet felt he was suffering pneumonia. Gave him anti-biotics (which the U of S didn't do for 3 days) and within 24hrs, my puppy was making a recovery at a cost SIGNIFICANTLY less than the U of S. I basically spent $1130.00 so that their students can use my pooch as a guinea pig. They didn't heed my concerns (about my puppy obtaining an illness from doggie daycare) and wasted my money, not bothering to perform a basic bacterial test (but pressuring me to consider a test for cancerous cells). Disgusted. RID: 17091
Click to report rating    10/5/09   4     4     1     1   For a teaching hospital with state of the art equipment, a standard adrenal surgery on a ferret was quoted at well over a thousand dollars. Vets in other cities (Calgary for example) can do it for under $500 and that's a private clinic. Some vets there are great but most are after running needless tests instead of utilizing their top end equipment. Very disappointed with their treatment of ferrets; they couldn't identify that my 8 year old male had cancer; kept giving me drugs for him even though I was sure it was lymphoma or adrenal. Finally took him to Lawson where they proved he had cancer in about 5 minutes. So much needless suffering because of their incompetance/willingness to LISTEN TO THEIR PATIENTS. Prices do NOT reflect a teaching hospital. RID: 14539
Click to report rating    1/16/09   3     5     3     2   I once called the emergency service at 4 am about a dog that was having seizures. I spoke with a live person who took a message, but no one returned my call. I've also taken one of my dogs in twice for emergencies. The staff had no interest in the dog's medical history and gave me unsolicited advice about the dog's general health, which, had they asked, was already being looked after. I agree about the guilt trips. The second time we went, we lucked out with a fabulous 4th year student, but the resident who followed up was cold, unempathetic, unhelpful, and made me feel like a moron. I did not take my dog back for a follow-up as instructed. The one really good thing is that they provide you with detailed written instructions. RID: 11263
Click to report rating    7/11/08   5     5     4     4   For being a teaching hospital they do a good job. I have only had to wait an hour in the waiting room once to pick up an animal and that is only because they had just turned cases over to new interns and it has hard to get ahold of the new intern. They were excellent at treating a rescue dog who was in my care. They need to work on their organization and communication skills as I had called after hours and a vet did not get back to me at all; I had to get ahold of a different vet to see my dog in an emergency (it was better than having to sit in the emergency room). If I was paying for the service in the end I would have been more upset. Their fees for services are excellent except for microchiping (they are costly). RID: 9269
Click to report rating    2/9/07   4     5     4     2   This is the only avian vet currently available in Saskatchewan and they treat all exotics. They are a teaching college and the prices don't adequately reflect this. The science and technology available, however, is above par. This is one of the largest veterinary colleges in the world and the best in Canada. Bring a book with you, you might be sitting more than you like. RID: 2785
