Click to report rating    3/5/25   5     5     5     4   We've had several excellent experiences at DoveLewis. It is nowhere near the cheapest option in town, but their specialty care has no comparison. RID: 71231
Click to report rating    10/13/23   1     1     1     1   Made an urgent care appointment for same-day, then cancelled it because I couldn't get to it (appointment was 1 hour after I booked it, but cancelled the appointment 20 minutes after I booked it). Said I couldn't get a refund because it was within 12 hours of the appointment time. MAKE ANY SENSE? They charged me $175 and won't give it back. PIECE OF**** PLACE! RID: 70873
Click to report rating    4/25/22   2     3     3     1   Went through the whole online form while my partner drove to DV with our backyard lamb that got bit up by the neighbors dog. Selected the “just exam, don’t charge us for more option”. Staff didn’t do an exam, but without consultation dosed the baby with morphine that they didn’t know how to administer to a sheep and then told us that it would cost between 1200-1600 for unspecified assistance or the lamb would die. My partner had to argue with them to leave with the lamb alive and they charged us $500 for the unauthorized morphine. Luckily the mobile vet got back to us during that time and gave the baby stitches, antibiotics and an anti inflammatory and said that she was doing great and would probably have been fine without more then antibiotics. He charged us under 200 and was wonderful. Dove Lewis seems way too excited to kill your pets if you don’t want to pay their ridiculous prices. RID: 70309
Click to report rating    1/15/22   1     2     1     2   Horrible experience. We waited (after checking in online) in the lobby for about 20-30 minutes then a tec said she would take my cat back for vitals and possible xray. Two hours later, no info from staff. I checked with someone and they said he was just assigned to a vet and would be assessed. TWO hours after that (FOUR hours in the back) still no info/update from anyone. I checked again and my cat was not assigned to any vet but is at the top of the list to be seen next. One more hour after that. FIVE hours of my cat sitting in the back!! Still no assessment! I was told a tec just asked the vet for my cat to be assessed. I was told they would start with my cat any minute. 15 minutes later. STILL NO UPDATE! I checked on my cat, still not assessed by a vet! So I asked for my cat back and left. Worst experience at any vet place ever! I will never go here again. They don't triage animals and take in too many animals than they can handle. No one ever apologized for wasting my time. RID: 70214
Click to report rating    2/20/21   1     1     1     1   I was told by Dove Lewis staff that their high prices were to cover the cost of care for clients unable to pay. What a ripoff. They posted a heartwarming story on Instagram about how they helped someone who was laid off, as part of a fundraising campaign support their nonprofit business, right? A less heartwarming story? How they took over $11,000 for treating a cat that had been lost and living on Portland streets for 2 months, and when the family ran out of money, Doug Lewis cut them off. It sickens me. RID: 69816
Click to report rating    9/17/18   3     3     3     1   Admittedly, this was several years ago. our 2 dogs were hit by a car. Some of the more serious injuries were de-gloved leg, missing toes, broken wrist, legs head trauma, dislocated hip. We were deciding to euthanize but the treating vet was also a bird hunter and assured us that not only would both survive, they would hunt. (which is what they live for).Nearly $30K later, neither was ever the same and never far from pain. Once you initially spend several thousand, then more crops up, where do you stop? Yes, more than $29,000.00.I was happy to have my family but their quality of life was diminished greatly and they have never hunted or really run freely again. We have a newbie in the family and he recently got a seed(hunting) and no amount of flushing his eye would remove it. Of course, on the weekend when all vets are closed or booked and won't take new patients. we were referred to Tualatin Animal Hosp. Great care. vet exam, sedated, local, seed removal, Ecollar, medicine $200. RID: 66797
Click to report rating    8/20/18   5     5     1     1   Dove Lewis is Non Profit status is a joke! This Vet Clinic first priority is money. I took in my very sick dog, was in the clinic 5 hours waiting while my dog suffered. Was told by the vet that two surgeries were needed on a unstable dog. We have fallen on bad times and was told by Dr that we did not qualify for assistance even when under the US income guidelines for poverty. Told our dog was not an emergency even though he would of died that night if he didn't get a simple procedure. Was told that an xray was 160.00 whereas my normal vet is 60.00 same digital machine. I thought the other Emergency vet in town for expensive this Non Profit is a teammate. RID: 66676
Click to report rating    7/18/17   1     3     2     1   Care runs $500 to $1500 per day, it's all about the money there, not the dog or cat. They are a nonprofit but all that means is they will take in an injured animal you bring in that is not yours, they will stabilize it and then offload it to a community vet. You will be charged the maximum for your own pet. I spent over $8000 trying to save my beloved cat, Murphy. On his last night there, the resident went to a computer. I thought she was going to mention something therapeutically, but no, she just t wanted to make sure my credit card was still good to go. On the way home I go a call, my cat was coding. They wanted me to authorize euthanasia and I said you've done enough, just let him go on his own. They charge $1800 for that service. I confronted them in a follow up visit on the resident's behavior and all the vet said. "Frankly, we were surprised you'd spent that much on a cat you hadn't owned that long when you could have gotten a free black cat on any street corner." RID: 64212
Click to report rating    5/30/17   4     4     3     2   Way way over priced! And it really doesn't matter if your pet dies. Still owe almost 2000.00 RID: 63776
Click to report rating    10/27/14   1     1     1     1   Most absurd pries I have encountered. INTERESTED IN MONEY,MONEY RID: 54317
Click to report rating    3/10/12   1     1     1     1   I don't understand why this vet asks for donations they charge WAY too much for services. They wanted to keep our cat overnight to give him fluids and were going to charge us $1200.00 We asked if they take payments and the vet said yes they would tak half now and the other half tomorrow! Seriuosly?we said no and the vet said the only choice then was to put him down. We also had to wait in line to pay while our dead cat lay in the pet carrier at our feet while the receptionist chatted on the phone with a woman who's dog was having puppies (not an emergency either). RID: 32787
Click to report rating    7/26/11   2     4     2     1   I would not recommend Dove Lewis to anyone. All the comments about them being all about the money are absolutely true. They were to take my dog with pancreatitis overnight for IV fluids,IV antibiotics and observation - the same treatment he was receiving at my own vet's during the day. He was to be without food or medicine by mouth and 3 hours after I left they fed him and gave him antibiotics by mouth without consulting us. Our dog relapsed and when I went to pick him up they demanded I pay the balance due before I could leave with my dog. Just don't go. I also recommend Tualatin Emergency. RID: 26496
Click to report rating    6/14/11   5     5     5     4   Most comprehensive emergency service available in Portland - they have saved my dog's lives 4 times. And yes, this level of service does come at a cost. I am glad they are there when I need them. RID: 25605
4/25/11   3     5     1     1   Our dog was acting very strange then lethargic so we brought him to DL. When the vet finally brought us back to talk with us about our dog, he basically gave us 3 carefully scripted options: 1) Run a full battery of tests 2) Run 1-2 tests and go from there 3) Euthanize the dog if it comes to that Wait a second... How did we go from talking about possible causes of a 7 year old, otherwise perfectly healthy, dog being lethargic to killing him??? Read all the other posts on yelp or citysearch about their scare tactics. All the 5 star ratings say the same thing too, "they are expensive but they helped my beloved pet". That's wonderful but save yourself the $2000-$3000 dollars and take your pet to Tualatin or someplace else and get better or at least the same level of care without the (well ochestrated) used car sales pitch using scare tactics to overcharge you. And btw, it's not just about the money, if you read all the other reviews of Tualatin ER, they never mention cost. RID: 24621
Click to report rating    8/28/10   1     5     2     1   sent away a dog with neck bite wounds. wouldnt use donation funds to treat and gave the owner a "patch" kit and he fixed up his dog IN THE waiting room. Dog had swollen neck (could he breathe?) and pus coming out of his mouth and they refused treatment. Also sent a $85 bill to the owner for having the vet give the patch kit and write up prescriptions and dog was never cleaned up or touched by a tech or vet. Horrid. My own vet treated this dog for free the next morning. Shame on DoveLewis RID: 19462
Click to report rating    5/22/08   1     2     1     1   I would NEVER go to Dove Lewis again. Had a terrible experience with my cat there, and they were rude and concerned only with how much money they could make. It turns out that they also misdiagnosed my cat. If I had listened to their advice, my cat would be dead now. I took him to another clinic, and for much less money (and much nicer vet & staff) my cat was treated and is now doing great. BEWARE OF DOVE LEWIS! It is a terrible place. They do NOT care about pets. RID: 8589
Click to report rating    3/16/08   3     3     5     1   Dove Lewis is a once fine institution that has turned into a money grubbing rip off. I had to get emergency treatment for my two dogs on a Saturday evfening and went there because they were the only vet open in a 20 mile radius (or so I thought until I heard about Northwest Vetrinary Specialists on 82d drive in Clackamas). They were more concerned about getting full payment up front than anything else. I understand the need to get paid, but they were complete a**holes. Now, about the bill. I have no doubt that I was eggregiously overcharged. I will try to get some other vets to confirm or deny this. I will NEVER use Dove Lewis again and will do my best to discourage others from doing so. In my opinion they are nothing but a rip off that financially preys on people at a time when they are willing to pay whatever is asked. RID: 7730
Click to report rating    9/25/07   1     1     1     1   DID SURGEY ON MY DOG WHEN THEY KNEW THERE WAS NO HOPE SHE DIED ON CHRISTMAS DAY. tHE ANIMAL CLINIC i USE TO TAKE MY PETS TO MESSED HER UP SO BADLY FOR A SIMPLE TOOTH CLEANING i HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TRY TO SAVE HER. D.L. HAS THE HIGHEST PRICES!! RID: 5999
Click to report rating    9/5/07   1     1     1     1   Worst experience with Vet Clinic EVER! We arrived before they opened for the night. Took them 15 min to see us. Our Cat was badly dehydrated and had lost 2 lbs quickly. Told Vet we had been thru this with another precious KittyBoy just 5 months before and lost him. I requested hydration ASAP. After a quick check we were given a price list of things they could do. First step blood work that would take an hour. 3hrs later after repeatedly asking girl was told ooops test didn't work have to repeat why not already done? Snotty reply we are busy. Another hour Dogs come in and go out. Told blood showed nothing need Xray. Give ok wait 45min ask if kitty feeling better from hydration. Told not done yet!!! 5 HOURS before hydrated. They don't care if cats die! Just want your $$! Refused to give us Xray, Blood work incomplete had to redo both at new vet. Took them 6 days to send records to new vet. Kitty could have been dead. New Vet SAVED!!DON'T GO TO DOVE LEWIS IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET. RID: 5826
Click to report rating    8/22/07   5     5     4     5   My cat had to go in to Dove Lewis for a broken leg at two in the morning. Dove Lewis was the only hospital open that could treat my sweet kitty. They are expensive, but compared to a human ER they were more efficient and the cost was much less than I expected. I am sorry folks, but have you been to a human ER without insurance? For the doctors at an ER in the Portland area to tell my husband he has really bad heart burn it cost us over $3,500.00! To fix my kitties broken leg it cost $1,200 total for surgery and two days in the hospital. Having a pet is a responsibility, not a right. You have to assume that there will be costs associated with them, including emergencies. Some day we will have universal health care for all species, until then you folks need to realize there is no such thing as a free kitten. PS. I make less then $27,000 a year, so I am not a rich person by any means. RID: 5696
Click to report rating    8/8/07   1     2     1     1   Very bad experience. DVM (Debra Liu) was difficult to understand and initially came to me with a contract for an overnight stay with an estimate of $2500+. They will ask you to sign and pay this in advance. My dog was quite dehydrated. I called back after 3 hours and DVM said all tests were inconclusive and that they should keep him. I refused. I went to pick him up. They returned my dog to me who had *just* been given fluids (injection) after being there for 4 hours now and I left. Apparently they were to give me some meds, but forgot. My dog recovered fine at home within 2 days. I'm still unsure what sort of virus/parasite or whatever he had but a little ginger (orally) has resolved it and a subsequent case quickly. It is *very* disappointing that they were not able to find *anything* and that they did nothing beyond the tests until just prior to my picking him up (dehydration). I wonder how he would have done overnight. :( They were quite busy. RID: 5515
Click to report rating    7/14/07   1     1     1     1   Their priority is Money over animal care, if you don't have all the Money they will NOT help your animal and tell you to put them to sleep ! ! ! RID: 5200
Click to report rating    7/14/07   4     5     3     3   Well, yes, they are expensive; but they are also very good, in my experience. Been there more than once over the years, & always happy with the care my animals received, even if my checkbook wasn't! And you'd expect to pay more for after hours services of any other profession, so I feel that picking on that alone isn't completely justified. Sure, if your pet can wait til your vet is open, it'll be cheaper. But if you have that *emergency* in the middle of the night, these guys are there, wide awake & ready to take care of your animal. Don't know about you, but I sure couldn't work those hours! They have also been very good for me about helping decide on the phone if you'd better come in, or if it can likely wait. Although they're expensive, I am an overall fan. They do good work. RID: 5196
Click to report rating    6/8/07   1     4     1     1   They overcharge for all their services, they are an emergency vet office and they are suppossed to be non-profit but at the prices they charge they have to be making a profit somehow, and if you cannot afford to pay the full charge up front they will turn your pet away even if that means it will die!! RID: 4447
Click to report rating    3/5/07   2     3     2     1   When my kitten had a garage door dropped on her by a neighbor kids, they wanted $700 for xrays. It cost me almost $200 just to have her poked and prodded and purchase some morphine for pain. The dose that they gave me was so high that my cat, on their dosing instructions, couldn't do anything on her own for 2 days. I finally took her off the morphine so she could eat and drink on her own and go to the potty. For the same $200, I was able to go to my regular vet and get a whole workup with xrays. Luckily, she had no internal injuries. I do not recommend this vet to anyone. I do recommend the vet in Tualatin if you have an emergancy. Hope this helps someone. RID: 2950
