Click to report rating    5/24/23   1     3     3     1   I took my french bulldog in exibiting signs of dehydration/gastritis, the vet was most concerned with me understanding that the dog had acute hemmorahagic gastrits syndrome then coming up with any comprehensive care for the dog. A woman came in with an estimate to keep the dog for 3 days for an astronomical amount of money, I informed them that I would have to take the dog home, I was given a dirty look and when I tried to engage to find another option she turned her back to me, left the room ignoring me trying to find another option. The doctor then came back in and recommended giving fluids under the skin which I agreed to. I was then told to bring him back if he worsened. The vet team never offered to do blood work or imaging without me agreeing to leave him there. He subsequently went home and after a few hours he had a respitory concern and passed immediately before we could get him out of the house. If the vet team at Pender did not try for a cash grab and actually offered servi RID: 70704

12/17/15   5     5     5     5   Typically excellent vet care. The pet resort provided excellent care with my elderly dog. Also, Pender's dog trainer, Michelle Jackson, helped me teach a high energy adolescent pup to walk on a leash without chasing everything in sight, although this is a work in progress every day. He increasingly automatically sits when I command "heel", comes when I call him off leash, and leaves trash on the ground when commanded to "leave it". My neighbors clearly see a change in his behavior and then start commanding their dogs who do not perform as well as my boy. We are on our way to being canine good citizens and entering agility. We still have a lot of work to do though as I only have had this English shepherd pup six months. RID: 59284

3/6/15   5     5     5     5   I want to thank Pender Veterinary Centre from the bottom of my heart. The care my Lab Sonny received during his 4 day stay in the hospital was extraordinary! The ENTIRE staff was amazing, especially Dr. Voell. Dr. Voell also called me every day to give me an update. He communicated the medical terminology in such a way that it was very easy to understand. There was so much compassion and desire to see that my dog received the best care possible. Pender genuinely cares about their patients! Prior to the recent hospital stay, Sonny was receiving cold laser therapy for his arthritis. Pender has state of the art laser equipment and Sonny's mobility improved tremendously! The front desk staff is super friendly as well. All of the technicians have been beyond wonderful. Other Dr.s Sonny has seen are very professional and on top of their game. Sonny has made a few special friends at Pender and we love them all!!! RID: 56175
Click to report rating    1/31/14   5     5     5     5   We started going to Pender in 2005 because they are available 24/7, which means they will care for your pet any time of the day and after our last emergency, that means everything to us. We expected higher fees since living in this area is more expensive but the fees were actually cheaper than our Centreville practice. The owners and managers of this large practice are very professional and caring. The hard working staff is always available and I love that I can call or stop by and talk to a vet tech anytime to ask medical questions. Pender has many outstanding veterinarians, it makes choosing one hard. I wouldn't take my pets any place else, they take great care of our 3 dogs! RID: 49579
Click to report rating    4/22/13   5     5     5     5   I have read a few bad reviews about this place, that's why I was a bit hesitant but I gave it a shot. I'm glad I did! Going in the building, it was very clean and sanitary. The person at the desk was so kind as well and answered all of my questions. Feeling nervous, since I had never taken my parakeet to a vet; I was happy with the results. The person at the desk told me to wait for a second as she picked up the phone etc. I paid afterwards. They did not try to rip me off of my money. The person who specialized in the field of clipping wings and nails took very good care of my parakeet. I could tell that she knew what she was doing. All in all, I would choose this place again! The price was reasonable as well. RID: 41954
Click to report rating    3/1/13   1     3     1     1   This place was all about the money. I was never even greeted by the vet but greeted many times to get asked for payment. They make sure they get paid first then they rush you out. Sad customer service I am amazed they are still operating. RID: 40791

Click to report rating    3/17/11   1     4     3     2   ALL the staff was rude, wasn't too happy with prices either. If you enjoy a place without a heart go to PENDER RID: 23622
Click to report rating    1/18/11   4     5     5     4   Pender has become way too big with too many doctors and therefore has lost some of its appeal. Stick with one of the senior doctors and you will be OK. We use Dr. Denney who has always been good and easy to communicate with. RID: 22161
Click to report rating    1/16/11   2     5     2     1   They have a large hospital and everyone looks very busy/serious, good equipment and a pleasant place to visit. They are good at seeing you when you need to be seen and a vet is easily reachable by phone. Also clean. However, they rip you off terribly for everything and are one of the most inflated vets price-wise in the area - they have no shame whatsoever about their overcharging you. A lot of billing "mistakes". They will do an ultrasound even if the vet doing it really doesn't know what they are looking for, then tell you "they don't see anything" and you still get charged a ton. Make sure you see someone there that has special training in ultrasound so you get your money's worth b/c you will pay the same regardless of skill level. Dr. Denney used to be a good surgeon, but I think he is losing it as he gets older. Very nice easy-going guy, but no attention to detail and makes a lot of mistakes due to failing memory or other reasons. Dr. Voell is better. RID: 22105
Click to report rating    12/18/10   1     1     1     1   I took my bird here quite a few times for wing clipping and nail trimming and he has never stressed or had any issues. We brought him in this past summer and they took him to a back room to clip nails and wings. Well I don't know what the hell they did in that back room but my COMPLETELY HEALTHY bird stressed so bad when he got home that he had a seizure, they messed up clipping his wings it was VERY uneven. So we brought him back to the vet and he stayed overnight. While he was there he got a cataract WHILE IN THEIR CARE, which the vet couldn't tell us how it even happened... they then released him to us and he obviously was not ready to come home. my bird died 2 days after we took him home.I showed the records to another vet for a 2nd opinion and they had done all these unnecessary tests and bogus charges, which I got a full refund for EVERYTHING, but wish I had seen these horror story reviews sooner about this place, maybe my bird would still be alive! :-( RID: 21492
Click to report rating    12/17/10   5     5     5     5   While it seems expensive, veterinary medicine in a progressive hospital IS expensive. I have lived all up and down the east coast and Pender Vet prices are right in line with most, especially given the NOVA area. As for CARE of animals, they are the BEST! RID: 21467
Click to report rating    7/31/10   5     5     5     5   Have been going here for 6+ years. First with a dog that lived to be almost 17 and now with a new puppy. My first choice is Dr. Peter Hyatt but will go to any other vet in an emergency. Dr. Hyatt is great - makes himself available at all times and cares about both the human and canine clients. Have found all staff to be carine and knowledgeable and would highly recommend. RID: 19029
Click to report rating    1/9/10   4     5     5     3   Doctor are good if you go to Pat Denney or one of the other senior vets. The emergency doctors seem lacking in ability and eager to get you to do unnecssary tests. RID: 16068

Click to report rating    6/29/09   2     4     3     1   There is a laundry list of things to say about Pender. My dog almost died as a result of poor choices made by an inexperienced emergency veterinarian. We will NEVER set foot in this hospital again. RID: 13333
Click to report rating    1/23/09   5     5     5     5   Always treat us right, they love our dogs and their emergency department has saved our beagle a few times RID: 11353
Click to report rating    9/15/08   5     5     5     4   I have taken 5 of our pets to this Facility for over 4 years. The facilities are beautiful and their staff is top notch. The administrative staff is always very professional and helpful. Whenever we take our animals there they are very concerned and even if we don't speak with the same doctor, all of the doctors there are very well informed about our pets' histories. We have always been led the right way with them, a couple of times we got second opinions and it proved to be very cost effective to take them to Pender versus another facility, and they also gave the right diagnosis and treatment options every time. Their emergency services are also excellent as our puppies tended to get into trouble a lot in their youth and the 24 hour emergency care fixed us up in no time. It is a little bit pricey but you pay for what you get. RID: 9995
Click to report rating    7/8/08   1     2     2     2   i was put on hold the moment someone picked up the phone, went there in an emergency, asked them to fax records to my reg. vet- which they never did! not happy with the way things were handled RID: 9234
Click to report rating    4/14/08   2     5     4     3   Pender has the latest technology and you really pay the price. The prices are extremely high, $13 just to make an appointment. The receptionists are not very friendly, which is a major turn off. They seem very rude. Once in a while, I'll have a friendly person answer the phone. The doctors are good, but they seem to try to get your spend as much money as you can. I think because this is a very large facility with large staff. They charge high prices to pay for all of the salaries of the people who work here. Also, the dog obedience classes were not up to par. I did not like the instructor. She hardly came around to see me or my dog and I ended up dropping the class. I felt that it was a big waste of my money. I've been going to Pender for at least 3 years now and I am not satisfied enough to continue going here. I'm going to try and find another local vet that have friendly staff. RID: 8081
Click to report rating    3/23/08   5     5     5     5   I had my cat declawed (horrible, I know, but it HAD to be done in her situation), and Pender was beyond excellent. The price was $300 less than 2 other places I got estimates for, and the facility was amazing. It is a well-oiled machine that still manages to retain a well above average level of customer service. They even let me come in after-hours on Easter Sunday to pick her up! I will never bring my cat anywhere else. RID: 7803
Click to report rating    6/5/07   3     5     4     2   They charged us $12 for the PHONE CALL to make the appointment. The prices are outrageously high to use them as a regular veterinarian. We drive farther out to get great doctors with great reputations and good monetary value. RID: 4368
Click to report rating    5/26/07   4     5     4     4   They have some very competent doctors and technicians, but they have a few that were less than satisfying to us. If you're willing to seek out the doctors you like, and request appointments with them, I think you will be a happy customer @ Pender. I think they are expensive, but it appears that their facilities are state-of-the-art, so I guess that's what you're paying for... RID: 4161
Click to report rating    4/7/07   3     5     4     2   For the exotics department it really depends on what vet you get. I've been impressed before and I've been horrified before. Prices are outrageously high. One benefit is that they do have an emergency clinic where you can walk-in if needed. RID: 3343
Click to report rating    3/15/07   1     4     2     4   I had two cats die there in three months. One of the cats was very young and not that sick. She had to stay overnight and they forgot about her. By the time we came back 6 hours later her temperature was under 90 degrees which turned to be fatal. They couldn't get her temperature back up and she basically went into a hypothermic shock and died right in front of me. The other cat was older with a heart condition. I will NEVER trust them with another animal of mine. A lot of the doctors are young, just out of school. RID: 3025
