I took my chinchilla to see Dr. William Hough because of a respiratory infection. Dr. Hough looked him over and told me that I need to give my chinchilla eye drops and an antibiotic to clear things up. Dr. Hough prescribed Clavamox (antibiotic) and Neocidin (eye drops) and I gave them to my chinchilla as instructed. After we went through our 10 day regimen I noticed my chinchilla wasn’t eating or drinking, so I took him to another vet who told me that chinchillas should never be given amoxicillin based antibiotics because it destroys their digestive tracts which could be deadly. This new vet also took x-rays of my chinchilla’s skull and showed me that the roots of his teeth are growing into his eye socket. So, Dr. Hough made two big mistakes – giving me Clavamox and telling me that my chinchilla’s teeth looked good. Because of the Clavamox, my chinchilla lost 1/5 of his body weight and I've spent approximately $300 trying to save his life.
