Horrible service. I had a sick bird, left there they make me wait 35 min and nothing, no word. Suzie was very rude and I think she hates her job and her life. I’m praying for her. Anyways, after a very high bill they gave me a dead bird. Very sad but all they care about is money. Running tests that you don’t know why bc is no results and no diagnosis. Backos is a weird person and don’t know what he is doing. Never will go back.

Some people have had good experiences with this clinic. I have not. When I brought my rainbow lory in on July 21, 2014 due to vomiting, blood was taken from his claw and we were told his WBC was double what it should be. Bacterial infection. They kept him at the clinic. Besides a blood test and X-ray no other tests were given. No gram stain, no crop check no choaca check. He was treated but the bacteria he had was unknown. No test given for that. Fast forward 6 days later he was dead. Necropsy showed swollen liver, and congested kidneys. Even after death the bacteria was unknown until my husband said he wanted a liver culture done. Only then did we find out that he had a klebsiella infection. After 3 months I finally requested the necropsy report but to this day have not received X-ray results or any DETAILED info as to how this could have happened. 4 normal liver tests yet he died of a liver infection. It doesn't add up. Very limited testing in my opinion. More should have b

Sam has been my vet for 14 years. With 6 parrots I've had every kind of situation imaginable come up. From egg binding to self mutilation; from saving one of my flock to losing one of my flock, he and his staff have been the most thorough and yet kindest people I have ever had to deal with. He will provide the level of service that YOU request. In addition, although he has various products for sale, he is not one to try to sell you special vet based diets. I've spoken to him all hours of the day and night and the personal service he has provided to my fids and I has been priceless.

Dr. Sam Backos is very knowledgeable and saved my bird's life when he was nearly dead from an accidental overdose of medication at home. He and his staff watched my birdie and did IVs, oxygen, and much observation in an incubator. I even contacted vets around the country when he first was admitted to the clinic. But Dr. Sam Backso and his staff nursed birdie back to health.

Great vet with experience and knowledge of avian disease and management. Available on short notice for emergency care and even willing to meet at his office at 1am on a Sunday morning to save your birds life should it be needed. A lot less heavy handed than other local avian vets I have used and will work with you to keep cost of tests etc down to ensure people are more likely to actually seek treatment. I am a certified aviculturist and would definitely recommend Sam Backos as an avian vet for both new and experienced bird keepers.

As other reviewer stated, clips nails for blood sample and other avian vets have explained that this is VERY painful for birds and to run the other way if your vet does this. A qualified avian vet will be able to draw blood quickly from a vein and not add to their stress. A vet is supposed to facilitate healing, not cause unneeded stress.

He does take blood from nails but people I know have lost their bird when the juglar doesnt clot. My bird has no reaction to a cut nail at all.

Yeah, he does take blood from the nail, but he did find and cure 4 differnet infections in my 3 parrots. He also is upto date in treatment choices, & gives very good care it seems and does care for the birds, I went to a world famous vet in OH, and am much happier to find Dr. Sam since he seems to care a lot and does know his stuff. dont care how he takes his samples, and he is avail 24-7. I have had birds 20+ years and I am satisfied with dr. sam and glad hes here.

Clips bird nails and squeezes feet for blood samples - which is extremely painful/stressful for a bird. When blood starts to clot, will keep clipping nail down and keeps squeezing. This whole process takes awhile and again is very painful for a bird who may already be ill or under stress. Other qualified avian vets will take blood samples via needle, which is done quickly and safely in the right hands.
