Click to report rating    11/1/22   1     1     1     1   Staged my dog's medical condition to make my dog an ICU patient. Drugged him into a coma, shoved a tube down his throat and then told me I need to do an MRI for $3500 to see why my dog is sedated on the tube because they put him on a tube against my consent, knew I did not have consent or knowledge of the risks and drugs involved to intubate a dog on a breathing tube, because they did this without telling what the drugs and risks involved are. They abused my ignorance, because of all the stress and shock I was under and then said I need to do surgery or an MRI if I want to get my dog off the tube or he needs to die. I refused and the doctor who drugged him and placed him on the tube assaulted my dog with the tube so violently that they told me to euthanize my dog. These people have no problem debilitating and even killing your animal in order to make money. RID: 70489
Click to report rating    3/27/22   1     1     1     1   We brought our dog in for an emergency and the from the moment we got there until the moment we left the whole experience was horrible. Our dog was seriously ill we went there with the hope that a procedure would help. The vet who attended us was unfeeling and cold. I've dealt with many vets and this is the first time I met a vet who I actually question if this person even love animals. When she told us that our beloved pet might die we wanted to bring him home to die with us. They delayed and made us wait like he and we didn't matter. What's worse, this vet tried to argue with us that he should be euthanized in that God awful clinic with cold vets and a crappy facility, rather than at home where we intended to call on our family vet to perform the euthanasia in our home. In addition, rather than taking no for an answer, this vet called on another vet to argue with us and she wouldn't take no for an answer, taking precious time away from us and delaying our pets suffering. RID: 70285
Click to report rating    10/14/21   1     4     4     3   Communication from vet to pet owner poor to none. Did not disclose costs. Did not inform what treatment had been performed let alone ask consent. RID: 70149
Click to report rating    3/13/21   1     4     1     1   a 50$ x-ray will cost you 370$ at this hospital. Wait time 3-4 hours. reception, omg, not friendly would be an understatement. Clearly nobody wants to be there but us and poor animals. RID: 69866
Click to report rating    2/3/20   1     1     1     1   that final decision had information of a different dog. This was not the first time this happened at the Toronto Veterinary Emergency Hospital, as when I signed the euthenization form I noticed that it also had the information of a different dog and pointed this out to the staff. They apologized and gave us a different sheet to sign, though I shutter to think what could have happened if I didn't catch that mistake. Now I am left with zero confidence that we made the right decision to end our dog's life as twice the hospital gave us the paperwork for a different dog. I will be doubting this for the rest of my life. Words cannot explain how shaken I am at the realization that we may have euthanized our dog based on a wrong diagnosis. I am disappointed, angry, sad, all in one. With other services you can always ask for a refund, but no refund would give us back our dog's life. RID: 69025
Click to report rating    2/22/19   1     5     2     1   Truly disappointed with our experience here. This was my first experience with TVEH and we ended up there with our golden retriever who was declining quickly. After a quick exam we were presented with an action plan that was pretty outrageous. When I began questioning the incredibly invasive treatment plan and costs, the vet became incredibly condescending and then began scolding me. Cost is never an issue for us if the diagnostics being run make sense, but many of our boy's symptoms didn't match what the more invasive tests would be testing for. After her flat out refusal to start with x-rays and ultrasound once we got him on fluids and pain medication, we ended up leaving and going to Cavan Hills where we have had several positive experiences and we are so glad we decided to leave. After the way we were treated, I would never recommend this hospital to anyone. RID: 67393

10/24/18   1     3     1     1   Don't waste your with at the TVEH.Our dog has been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and so we were referred to Dr. Steven Patten. We arrived EARLY, but instead of being on time, we never got to see him at all. When we asked if our wait would be much longer, front line staff just made excuses for him. After being there over an hour, sadly, we left, and now we're looking elsewhere for care. So instead of properly managing the doctors time table properly, front line staff just made excuses. The facility looked good and clean but I cannot comment any further on that therefore a mid rating. AS far as punctuality is concern, we waited until we could wait no longer, so below zero rating if I could. Wasted time is wasted $$money so they failed there to. I also asked for him to call me back to explain himself.. he has not called back to date. I will be forwarding these complaints to the college. Don't waste your time here, your pets too important to waste on unprofessional like conduct. RID: 66943
Click to report rating    9/24/18   1     5     1     1   The wait time is ridiculous, waited over 5 hours. Staff does not acknowledge your even there, no updates as to how long. RID: 66827
Click to report rating    4/11/18   5     5     5     5   I can not say enough good things about TVEH. My 5 year old cat began wheezing in the middle of the night, we were going to take her to the emergency vet on Kingston but they happened to be closed for renovations so we went to TVEH instead... I am SO happy we did. TVEH is a huge facility with everything you could possibly need on-site; cardiologists, neurologists, surgeons, critical care specialists, the list goes on. They were able to immediately tell that my cat was having congestive heart failure and as they went through treatment options, they were incredibly compassionate. Was it expensive? Yes. There isn’t universal health care for pets so I knew it wouldn’t be cheap but I never felt as though they were trying to upsell me, or guilting/pressuring me to spend outside my means. Because of the great vets and technicians, my little lady was able to come home. RID: 65925
Click to report rating    6/23/17   2     3     3     1   Do not take your pet this hospital. After paying $200 for an emergency consultation, they weren't able to tell us a single thing other than recommending a number of additional tests that would cost us over $500. RID: 63999

Click to report rating    11/27/16   5     5     4     4   Brought my beautiful precious toy poodle here as she received surgery five years ago for her legs beeing fractured from being hit by a car. Dr Carl Porter was awesome, gave us options being that the surgery was very expensive. Considering the amount being $7,000, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. Bella made a quick recovery and we were very grateful to Dr. Porter for the great job he did, as he gave her back her life. Unfortuately five five years later which was 1 to month ago Bella experienced constipation so I took her to my vet and they recommend tveh as she needed to have surgery. Bella had developed a tumor in her pelvis, thank goodness it was benign. We requested Dr. Porter since he performed the surgery and knew all about Bella. Surgery was performed and The tumor successfully removed. It was the size of a golf ball. Bella made a quick recovery. We can't thank Dr. Porter enough.  8/27/15   5     5     5     5   After countless horrendous experiences at both the VEC north and south I assumed all emerg clinics were ripoffs and uncompassionate. I am so happy to have found this place! I have come in after hours with my dog Skippy and received great care. But the specialists are OUTSTANDING. I have visited Dr Campbell, their neurologist, a couple times and he is thorough, patient with all my questions, compassionate and does not push for anything unnecessary. When I have had questions he was available to talk with me, and will respond to emails. Also their internal medicine specialist Dr. Smith has also been amazing at taking her time with me and Skip and calling with results and being available to talk further over the phone. Every doctor and tech I have seen believe to put quality of life over quantity, which I appreciate, and are compassionate and great with Skip and me. Last but not least, all of the front of house girls are always friendly, professional and caring. Thank you TVEH!!!! RID: 58195

10/19/14   1     2     1     1   My vet referred my dog for an emergency procedure, as he did not have the necessary equipment to perform it that day. He called ahead and told them I was enroute. After waiting two hours to see a vet, I was told exactly what my vet had said and was presented with an estimate for $1900 worth of tests that they wanted to perform before completing the procedure. I said I just wanted the procedure done and if it was unsuccessful, I would consider further testing. They would not do what my vet had referred me for, so I left, but not before paying $200 for a useless "emergency" consultation to tell me what I already knew. RIP-OFF artists that think everyone is made of money. I went back to my vet the following day and they had obtained what was required and performed the procedure. My dog is now doing well. I'm going to do some research to find a better, less money-oriented, more caring emergency clinic. RID: 54161

4/8/14   1     1     1     1   this hospital should be re-named as they do not deal with the emergency at hand. our dog was brought in alert, but in a diabetic emergency but they treated her for 12 hours with IV (not insulin) and as a result developed a blood clot (PE in the lung) and suffered. All they care about is your money, she couldnt breath but the critical care specialist is taking about money another 8,000 to try to do help her by the time i went to see her she had taken her last breath RID: 50947

1/6/14   5     5     5     5   I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone. Dr. Carl Porter is an excellent vet and surgeon. He is professional, friendly, courteous, and most importantly, gentle with my little dog. His tech is also very friendly as well. The staff are also very helpful. Kristin helped me set up my Trupanion insurance and took care of all the paperwork so that I didn't need to worry at all. I also like that the facility is always very clean and the front staff are always very professional and polite. This is an emergency & referral hospital. Emergency services are definitely going to be higher than a general practitioner because they are practicing out of hours. Referral services will also be higher because board-certified vets are providing you 5-star service in their areas of specialty. RID: 49109

6/25/13   5     5     5     5   Emma was referred to TVEH-results of CT showed a large tumor of her liver. The recommendation was if we wished to treat her then surgery should be performed asap. One hour after surgery started Dr. Avery Gillick informed me the growth was encompassing major vessels-her chances of surviving major surgery was guarded-given her agethe enormity of the growth and location. As a responsible veterinarian he offered me 3 options: 1)As she was asleep now-let her go 2)Awaken her to say goodbye 3)Allow the surgeons to continue. There was only one choice & proceeded with surgery. Why was I given choices?I realized with the prognosis & a high chance that I could lose Emma-I would still be financially responsible for the surgery. Many rant about the cost of our pets’ medical care-think about it- our care is funded by our medical plans government provided or private-pets are not.My Emma is recovering.Words cannot express my gratitude.Thank You to ALL the incredibly skilled and caring staff at TVEH.  6/1/13   3     3     3     1   Under previous management an excellent provider. Now it seems as if they believe that if they don't do every test possible, and charge for every thing possible then tough. They do not listen, Took in an old cat that had stopped eating. Very clearly told the vet that the cat would go to try to eat, but the stopped- and one cold hear a clicking sound. After every high priced scan and other test and over $5,000 their analysis- cat was old and had a couple of teeth that should be removed. Took the cat directly to our regular vet and asked that the file be forwarded. Next morning she called and said she could not perform the surgery- as the cat had a fractured jaw which was why he could not eat, and was the source of the clicking we had been hearing. None of the materials in the transferred file made any comment of this condition. When we inquired of TVEH how with all the tests and scans this was missed this they would not respond. RID: 42861

5/28/13   5     5     4     4   They are just like any human emergency clinic. They get busy. And yes, they are expensive, but they have always been upfront with all the costs and never pressure you or make you feel guilty for doing anything against their suggestion. Chloe was diagnosed with necrotizing encephalitis and the staff here were AMAZING. They did their best for Chloe and they supported us as fur parents. Unfortunately, we ended up losing Chloe to the disease, but I will never forget the staff at TVEH. She was well taken care of and I truly appreciate all they did for her. RID: 42775

2/24/13   4     5     4     3   Fantastic facility. This clinic saved my dogs life. Caring team of surgeons. Expensive, but get what you pay for. Kept me fully aware. Highly recommended. RID: 40680
Click to report rating    2/17/13   5     5     4     4   I have had nothing but great experiences at this clinic with my two dogs. I would highly recommend bringing your pet here. It's not the cheapest clinic, but well worth the money for my furry loved ones. RID: 40494
Click to report rating    1/26/13   5     5     3     4   Thanks to Dr Nelson and all the specialist vets for fixing my dog when my vet couldn't. This hospital isn't cheap, but I spent a lot of money getting nowhere and here I got an answer. I didn't have problems with rude staff as others said, everyone here was helpful and kind. They explained everything and called me every day and let me visit in the ICU. There was a long wait in Emergency but it's a busy place. Worth the money for my buddy. RID: 39938
Click to report rating    1/6/13   4     5     4     3   I only rated them low on finances because, well, it is expensive for emergency care, but I guess it would be anywhere. My dog is currently there because of digestive problems, and so far I have been very impressed. It is a very trying time for me but the staff has been very good. I've spoken personally to Dr. Nelson several times and she returns my calls when she can, and explains everything. They only admitted my dog when it seemed very serious; prior to that I was advised to monitor her myself but became worried and wanted her checked in. I just came for a visit because she has to stay another night, and was allowed a 1.5 hour visit with no problems (could have stayed even longer if I my dog wasn't feeling poorly). The front desk staff have been very good as well. I don't know, I guess each person's experiences are different but so far am I hopeful that the doctors will find the problem and get my dog home to me. RID: 39433
Click to report rating    12/3/12   1     1     1     1   Stay the hell away from this place, they have absolutely no respect for people. I have had terrible personal experience of dealing with the front staff which consisted of nothing short of rude and catty women who not only wasted my time but treated me with complete disrespect. I would find it hard to believe that they treat animals any better and after reading these reviews my suspicions have proven to be right. I knew from the second I arrived here this place was a complete money grab and that these people were all fake. I will NEVER bring my pet here and I continue to share my experience with this facility to friends and family discouraging them from ever coming here. RID: 38832
Click to report rating    11/6/12   2     2     2     1   Ended up spendng close to 10,000 dollar's on my fur baby only to have him pass away. He was a young dog, died just after his second birthday. Specialist's recommended doing a proceedure on my dog that he was not healthy enough for. Although, they didn't tell me he wasn't healthy enough until after they killed him. They ended up puncturing his lung during the scope. They called us to say that for another 10,000 they could remove one of his lung's. I am not making this up. It took me month's before I could even write a letter to complain to the clinic. Still brings tears to my eyes. Never did find out why my dog kept getting pneumonia. After 10,000 I would have thought I would have some answer's but that's not how it worked. Just last week I received someone else's invoice in the mail. They were scolding the recipiant for not paying her bill on time. Makes me wonder, who got my statement??? will never take another fur baby here ever. Drive to Guelph!! RID: 38302
Click to report rating    10/29/12   5     5     5     5   I seriously question the validity of the negative comments here. Price - this is an EMERGENCY hospital people! You're going to pay for that. Also, you get what you pay for. If you want sub-standard care, go visit a regular vet whose only good at pushing for blood tests and prescribing unnecessary medicine. If you are looking for top notch care by top notch vet's, go to TVAH. They recently saved my dogs life who is only 5 years old. He was in ICU for 5 days and yes it cost - but since when do you put a value on a beloved pet? An idiot vet recommended I take my dog back there this weekend because of another medical issue, only to find out that she was mistaken, much tur relief. Sure they could have taken the dog for the night to monitor him but they said it wasn't necessary. If you can't afford the care, particularly in case of a medical emergency, then don't own a pet - SIMPLE!!! I highly recommend this facility - they are the best of the best in Toronto. RID: 38140
Click to report rating    9/23/12   1     1     1     1   Ir you value your pets life, for haven sakes, DO NOT BRING THEM HERE. My family had brought our dear cat here, because she was going through some kidney problems, she was not feeling well, when we brought her, and when i came back to see her the next day, she could barely move or breath, and she did not go there a breathing problem, that was something the doctor here caused. They just tried to get more money out of us by getting us to agree for her to stay with them so they could monitor her, but they did not if they had they would have noticed she was getting worse. They dont know what they are talking about and they dont care for your pet, please dont trust them here, if i had read the reviews, i would have never brought my pet here. RID: 37385
Click to report rating    9/2/12   5     5     5     5   I called the hosptial first and was asked about the problem. Was advised about an emergency clinic that was much closer to my home. I told them I would be coming there anyway. When I arrived, they were ready for my pet. The male vet tech at the desk checked her over first. Very professional I might add. When she saw the doctor, he found her problem within 15 minutes. I had a good ending to my story and my bill was very reasonable. Would go back in a second. Thank you TVEH. RID: 36966
Click to report rating    8/27/12   1     2     1     1   If you own a pet that you care for dearly, i would suggest you avoid this hospital at all costs, i took my beloved cat here for a kidney issue and instead of being seen by the emergency doctor, she was brushed off to see an internist ( more money for the visit), the female internist recommended testing i was against..and said she wont feel comfortable otherwise to treat her- when i had given her my cat's blood test which indicated she didnt need to get invasive test.. my cat was treated very poorly, i had to wait hours before i could see her, the other female vet who discharged her did not even know my cat was a female, and was pushing me to schedule another visit in a week, i decided to take my cat away because she got worse while she was here...she was at least running around outdoors before i brought her in here!!! :( please, if you care about your pets, save them, DONT bring them here, this has been my experience, all they care about is MONEY AND NOT YOUR PET!  6/27/12   1     1     1     1   talked us out of euthanizing sick 12.5 year old dog, said surgery would be easy for him to recover from. Did not tell us they discovered dog had low blood pressure prior to surgery. This limited anesthetics and painkillers that could be used throughout and after surgery. During operation organs became swollen due to low bp. Dog became tense during stitching. But we were told everything went smoothly. As a result, dog suffered pain and anxiety for 5 hours without us being there for him. They performed this surgery then finally contacted us when his kidneys failed. Then they tried to promote more and more treatment, instead of letting our dog die in peace.it costs more to treat an animal than euthanize it, and their main objective was revenue, regardless of suffering it causes.  3/26/12   1     1     1     1   I was not impressed with their services at all. Very rude front staff supervisor for starters, she had a very foul mouth and I did not enjoy listening to her profanity while I was sitting in the waiting room for my pet to come out.  3/8/12   5     5     5     5   My dog was dying in my arms when I got there, and 5 days later she walked out of the clinic. Dr Ethier told me she is the only dog he treated in her condition that survived, and not only did she survive, she has recovered 100%. The staff went above and beyond my expectations, calling me mutiple times a day with updates, offering her their own Thanksgiving dinner to try to get her to eat, letting me sit with her in the ICU when she couldn't be moved, and staff I had never even met before knew me & my dog by name. If your pet needs emergency or specialist care, I highly recommend TVEH. RID: 32746

They were caring, communicative and patient at every level. The receptionists were friendly and concerned, the techicians were knowlegeable and the doctor spent a great deal of time explaining options to e. Click to report rating    12/8/11   2     3     1     1   my dog had swallowed a j-cloth, my vet referred me to them, said it was the only place that could handle it. I used to trust my vet! But I got a rough quote of 2000.00 for scoping. They said the alternative is to let her die, or pay 1000 to euthanize. I called and spoke to the office staff before bringing her, asked if i could make pymt arngmnt, she took a long time, went back & forth between me & the office mgr - then said Yes, they would work with me. I was so thankful & said I would bring her right in. The Vet that saw her said I had to sign the papers for permission for treatment, of course I did, then after doing so said that I knew that I was now responsible to pay in full or they would keep my dog - this in front of my 11 daughter! I was in distress! Worked diligently to secure $1000 of the bill, called that night, spk to Dr. told him what I had so far, he said that would get her home. Click to report rating    11/11/11   2     4     3     3   BIG disappointment they kept giving me the run around of price for a TPLO surgery. After paying all that money the plate had to be removed. Another huge expense, I tried to pick my dog up but didn't have the money on me (husband had it) and they refused to give me a price and denied me my dog but until i paid. Click to report rating    9/6/11   4     5     2     1   Some of the best veterinarians work here, however you would only know that if you could get a hold of them without having to make a $150 appointment. They overcharge you for medication (200 mL of Lactulose for $26?, you can get 1000mL for $8 at the drugstore. They use human grade orange flavour). Other than that, most of the staff are very friendly and caring. They have great equipment and put lots of effort into your pets recovery. The only complaint I have is the over-priced services and products. Only go here if you have the money or if it is to save the life of your pet. RID: 27420

2/15/11   3     3     3     3   I have given the emergency clinic a neutral rating, as I have been quite satisfied in the past. But they must have new management or something, because on the last 2 visits, it seemed to be all about how much money they could get out of me. My cat had what turned out to be a respiratory infection, and they wanted to do $1800 in tests. I know this because my cat had the exact same symptoms the following year & my regular vet, charged less then $200 for diagnosis & antibiotics. Unless I have a real life or death emergency, I won't going back there real soon. RID: 22899

Click to report rating    10/21/10   2     3     3     1   I have mixed feelings about this clinic. I brought in my diabetic cat for two emergencies. The first time he had a bladder infection - the vet said it was the worst one he had ever seen, told me he thought my cat had cancer and recommended $3000 worth of tests. I escaped with a bill of $500. The second time my cat had a diabetic seizure: the clinic acted promptly and saved his life, but the junior vet told me matter-of-factly that my cat was now blind. Both times my regular vet made far less fearful, and far more accurate diagnoses. Both times my cat recovered 100% under his care - and regained his sight completely. In other words, the clinic has reasonably skilled vets but they are bent on extracting the maximum amount of dollars from pet owners by fear-mongering. I had to sign over $2000 on my Visa both times before they would see my cat. And both times I saw several unhappy pet owners leave with their untreated pets because they could not pay. Pray your pet never has an emergency. RID: 20425

ER docs are very good but was assigned a specialist whom I felt was more interested in making money off me & my pet's suffering than in helping to guide me in choosing which course to take in treating my pet's illness. A few staff members were not very helpful or were dismissive in tone or frankly rude, unprepared and condescending. Other staff members were very nice, empathetic and helpful. Was told in polite terms to limit my visits to see my pet in ICU by non-medical/support staff because my pet got too anxious when I left. Was told on the phone that I better not be later than 11:30 am picking up by pet for an MRI, I got there at 11 am but had to wait an hour before my pet was ready for me to transport to the MRI. When I returned to clinic with my pet after the MRI, reception asked if my pet was supposed to be returned to their clinic!!! He needed to be on a catheter 24/7-where else would I take him???? They also send my dog home before hving the report done. The next day they told me I gotta bring my dog back. They should not have send my dog home in the first place, they should wait for all results and send her back when her situation is stable. Also, the vet kept saying the chance is 50/50. But I research the problem online, and ask a few other vets, is not tht negative. It is very command and usually it heals by long term medication. But the vet in this place kept telling me 50/50. which made my mom extremely worry, even the issue wasnt as serious as describe. RID: 18560
Click to report rating    4/28/10   1     4     2     1   It looks and feels like a funeral home. Although the facilities are shiny and new, complete with tropical plants, a spacious seating area, and a special play area for children, dont be fooled. visiting your pet will become an issue- they will decide when and how (I had waited 2 hours to see my pet for 2 minutes just to be kicked out and told to make another appointment to visit). The techs act more like bouncers. the vets are discouraging and will only offer proper treatment when you commit to x amount of dollars (thousands). the equipment is great but if nobody is watching the equipment, hazards ensue (this is my experience). Although a crisis MIGHT be averted with their treatment (you never know who your going to get-but if you can, watch out for nelson) they have no concerns about letting you walk out without a diagnosis! not capable or not willing to help, this morgue should be avoided.
