My cat has congestive heart failure and requires daily medication to keep his condition under control. I've been a loyal client of the GSAH for years. Recently my financial situation changed and I was no longer able to afford the drugs. I went to Dr. Pisz hoping that he might be able to assist us by providing me with a prescription I could use to get the drugs elsewhere at a price I could afford. He refused to help, arguing that if he made an exception for one person, everyone would expect him to do this for them and his business would go under. I don't know if he thought I'd plaster the town with flyers proclaiming you can get free drugs from him or what, but I would never do anything to hurt the business of someone who would go the extra mile to help a person in need.
Things being as they are, however, you can be damn sure I will tell every single person I meet that this man would let a seriously ill animal suffer and die rather than do anything that might hurt his bottom line.

There is no vet in Cambridge Bay and when my puppy got run over, I had no option but to 'send her out'. By reputation, I chose the Great Slave Animal Hospital. ON A LONG WEEKEND, they collected my puppy at the airport, prepared for surgery, tested her appropriately, loved her and sent updates and then returned her to me with a reasonable bill. This kind of 'Customer Service' to a complete stranger is above and beyond and left me with a belief that I can wholeheartedly recommend this clinic and Dr. Pichette (sp?), Roxanne and Liselle. Oh, my gosh, if there is ever ANYTHING I could do for them, I would. They understood and 'treated' MY desperation with compassion and consistency. In this crazy world, to find a sanctuary of such goodness is so worthy of celebration. May blessings, unimaginable, befall all of you and your clinic!

Gsah is the best clinic in yk. Dr. Pisz is very knowledgeable, though can be rude at times (he's much better with animals than people, but I'm OK with that). He has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 35 years and I have never had any issues with the level of care he gives to all his patients. As I'm looking to enter into a pre-vet program in the near future, I would be very proud to study under Dr. Pisz. The quality of gsah as a vet clinic is top notch, and they always look for ways to improve their client relations and the quality and level of care for their patients regardless of species :) keep it up guys!

Dr. Pisz has been helping northern animals for a long time and that should never be forgotten but that doesn't make me blind to the numerous issues at GSAH. Much of the staff are rude and unknowledgeable. Management allows for a general attitude of unprofessionalism. And too many examples of situations where care and/or knowledge/skill were lacking and led to subpar animal health care.

I agree the staff can be rude, but this is more to do with their office manager setting a precedence than the actual vet care. In case you didn't know, Dr. Pisz pays all the food and a lot of the care for the pound dogs. He always strives to save their lives, not taking the easy way out of putting them down. I love seeing him and even having moved from YK, still call him for advice.

My four animals have all been adopted from the Great Slave Animal Hospital and all the animals had behavioral and health issues. It was Dr. Pisz and his staff that saw the potential in Tide, Time, Papita and Charlie. If folks in the clinic has not see their worth and taken care of them they would not have found there forever home. The support and kindness that they have shown my critters has been enormous. And if you ever want to see Dr. Pisz melt bring good old Papita in for a visit and no time Tom is smiling. There is room for improvement at the Clinic and I encourage staff to keep trying to strive for better services and resources. There is room for improvement. The staff have been fantastic to me and my four animals. Non of them would be around today if the clininc did not has a no kill policy. My critters have blossomed and found the closet thing to heaven on earth. Thanks to the folks at Great Slave Clinic for treating and caring for the abandoned, sick and abused.I appreciate it

To the person who said he did a great job and people 'love to criticize' - that's awesome for you that you had that experience and your animal came out OK. But might I suggest that a negative trend is likely indicative of a serious problem? It is not just Dr. Pisz's lack of 'bedside manner' - it's that often the animals go without proper care and are mistreated. I have seen this first-hand. His staff includes a couple good people (Kim, for example is awesome) but by and large they are impatient with clients and animals alike. "This is Yellowknife" is not an excuse to mistreat an animal or disrespect a client.

I have just come across this vet rating... and i must say....PEOPLE SURE DO LIKE TO CRITICIZE, I was reading all these slandering remarks against Dr. Pisz…… I have only been in Yellowknife for the past 4 years and I take all three of my dogs to him. Yes he is abrupt but he does the JOB RIGHT………COME ON! I had him do a huge surgery on my dog and yes I must say he is a GREAT SURGEON. He’s abrupt and to the point! I wouldnt want a sissy working on my animal thats going to be crying and having a melt down. I want someone that knows his stuff someone that doesnt attach himself emotionally to everyones dog. Its not his dog its YOURS, hes providing a service. Yes the staff need a bit of training but this is YELLOWKNIFE! PEOPLE COME AND GO its hard to find staff that will stay for years and years to come. As for the clinic itself I have been out there many times and now they are doing renovations to better the quality of service they are giving Animals.

If there was any other choice I am sure most of us would not visit this "Vet" (and I use the term losely when speaking about Pisz). Non-exsistant people skills aside, he lacks the minimum required professional skills to examine rock (no offense intended to geologists) never mind a living creature. It hurts me deeply having to take my beloved pets to this ****. I work myself into a state of panic when it comes time to go to his clininc - he is always so anxious to get with a knife and look inside! What the hell is up with that??

I have taken my dogs and cats to see this butcher and have now decided to drive down to Hay River where a vet drops in every 6 weeks to perform work.I made an appointment to have my Foxred lab spayed. I was told that she needed to come in for an examination before the surgary. I brought her in the vet checked her heart rate and said that she was good to go and then charged me $85 for the exam. When they performed the surgary they nicked something that caused her to bleed alot and she had to stay a extra day that we were charged for. I find his prices are twice the price of what I had to pay in Alberta and the care at his clinic is third world quality at best. I wish someone else would open up a shop here so that this Vet would close down.

I have taken my dog and cats to Dr Pisz for over a decade and have always been happy with the service. Since relocating down south, I've found my vet bills have increased a lot for all of my routine appointments as clinics down south are somehow more expensive than in Yellowknife. Dr Pisz's people skills aren't always the greatest, but he obviously cares for the animals and is a good veterinarian.

I deal with this veterinary service all the time because I live in the NWT. They have disappointed me so many times. I will talk to someone and set up what my pet needs done, when it needs done, etc. Nine times out of ten, there is a mix-up in communication. Not to mention the service provided. These vets are more interested in making money than they are with the actual care of people's pets. They are "scalpel happy" and will perform unnecessary operations. My dog is lucky to have all four legs today. If I had followed their advice, she would have had her right leg amputated when this drastic measure was NOT necessary. I am so glad I "gave my head a shake" and didn't go through with the operation.

The conditions of the building are deplorable; dirt is everywhere, sanitation is not a priority. The staff is pleasant but not professional and not well trained. The vet himself is someone I would only go to for a life or death emergency. He has a well earned negative reputation. I spend hundreds of dollars flying and driving south instead of bringing my dog to him. I wish his licence was revoked.

Dr. Pisz, my vet for 17 cats for past 11 years. Available for care on every day he is in town, even Christmas Day. Has euthanized one cat at home so the cat would not have to return to GSAH where he had waited too long for a home. Costs for vet care were higher for us in Ottawa and Quebec where too many vets put income first and our pets second. I inform myself about pet care so I am able to understand what is being proposed. Dr. Pisz always answers my questions. I do not mind waiting if there is an emergency. Dr. Pisz has saved countless pets who had no other resource in YK as we have never had an SPCA building or staff. This function has fallen to Dr. Pisz. City pays 5 days care for dogs plus euthanasia. Thankfully, Dr. Pisz keeps those animals up to a year at his cost so they find a home. City pays nothing for cats - Dr. Pisz just saves them. Thank you Dr. Pisz for your skill for my pets and for your compassion and generous work on behalf of those who have nobody else.

This veterinary hospital is not well kept, smells and is not sterile. The veterinarian practises old medicine, does not do a thorough physical exam on the animals and is not very pleasant to deal with. This clinic would be closed down or put on probation if it was in any of the southern provinces. The vet himself would probably have his license suspended and have to go through a probationary period of working with other vets before he could practise again. He still believes that if a dog has bladder stones that there will be crystals in it's urine, but this was proved not to be so over ten years ago. The prices also would not be over priced if the medicine practised was proper. We definately need another vet here or for Dr Elkin to come back.

I just returned from taking my new puppy in for her 2nd. set of shots... as well, my cat for her usual 6 month allergy shot. The total for the examination and 2 needles for the puppy was $105.00 (which was about what was expected). The cat's total bill was $110.00 which the bill says was for the Depo injection, and examination/consultation. Dr. Pisz did not even check her heart... only gave a needle and that was that. Why was I charged for an examination... when one was not given? Unfortunately this man is the only vet in town. We need a new vet!

The clinic is not well equipped and dogs/cats are placed together in cramped quarters (= added stress). Vet is abrupt and not very helpful. New vet seems afraid of dogs and poor at giving needles. I am not sure the techs are really vet techs. YK really needs a new clinic with new vets.

Will never go there again. The clinic is dirty and the Vet (Pisz) is rude and abrupt. I cannot believe that the standards at this place of business are acceptable and corrolate to the CVMA standards. My advise would be to go down south and avoid this disaster all together.

I took my dog to see Dr Tom Pisz, at the only vet clinic in town. I found the facilities to be unkempt and desperately in need of renovations. The vet himself was snarky, rude and struck me as a person who likes neither animals, nor people. The other staff we encountered were all very warm and helpful. Beggars can't be choosers, he's the only clinic in Yellowknife. If our dog ever needs any major treatments, he will be sent to Edmonton to see a more professional vet.
