Click to report rating    10/19/22   1     1     1     1   Our experience with this clinic years ago was great. We have been there over 6 times in the past week for the same issues. No one is caring or empathetic about the situation. The cost of the bill keeps changing from day to day. Overnight my bill went up over $500 for an overnight stay. None of the complications of surgery were discussed with us and it really feels like they are only in it for the money. Unfortunately, I have had a terrible experience and would not recommend this place to anyone. RID: 70480
Click to report rating    5/26/22   1     1     1     1   Writing this review to warn others with sick pets. We brought our 5 month old puppy here for an emergency visit. He was lethargic, vomiting and wouldn’t eat or drink. Our initial visit with one of the vets was fantastic we were very impressed by how quickly they were able to get us in. After leaving this visit we had tests completed with results that were suppose to be back in a couple of days, we were very worried and waited anxiously for them. Weeks went by and we did not get any results. We tried calling numerous times where the receptionists were very helpful and would inform us they let the vet know to call us, but we never received a call. Finally almost 3 weeks after the testing Dr. Shand called us. She called us in a very unprofessional matter with no compassion whatsoever, to tell us that our puppy in fact did have a condition. Again, this was almost 3 weeks after the initial problem, of course we had many questions and were very concerned. Dr. Shand was very rude and did not RID: 70340
Click to report rating    5/6/21   1     1     1     1   They were good years ago, but since going to their new building, they are no longer a good veterinary in my opinion. I had 2 close together visits, one was for my macaw, which they said they worked with them. Well they didn’t book me in when they had their experienced macaw vet available, but told me to make sure I do that next time I bring my macaw in, after the fact. My macaw was getting tapped on the head by a pen from an assistant, they didn’t know how to handle him, and I had to help. He was very scared, and I even got bit in the process. Then they charged me $180 for barely doing his nails, and beak. My 2nd visit with them was for my dog Yoda, who had a blockage that I removed before bringing him in. The vet at that time told me he wasn’t in good shape, and I should put him to sleep, because he didn’t think he would make it the night; I put my foot down, and refused. My dog Yoda made it through, very well in fact, then they charged me $4500 for him being there 2 days. RID: 69951
Click to report rating    6/21/20   5     5     5     5   Cavan hills will be the new primary care givers for my 4 dogs. The front desk has always been friendly and helpful and the vets (I have met 3) wonderful professionals. Unfortunately one of my dogs had to be euthanized. Everything was so peaceful. She passed in the most caring way imaginable. RID: 69331

1/30/20   1     3     1     2   Have used Cavan for years. Service/Price has been satisfactory in the past. Recently I went to set up an appointment for 5 puppies to get their boosters. I was told appointments needed to be booked at least 3 weeks in advance in order to see one of their doctors. They wouldn't even book me an appointment, told me they would give me a call IF they were able to fit me in at some point. Never received a call back. The attitude and accusations of 'bad puppy parenting' because I didn't book multiple weeks ahead of time were enough to make me walk out disgusted - not just at their unprofessionalism, but also at their willingness to put 5 puppies in uncessary danger by delaying their booster shot. Called another vet - got in the very same day (even though I was trying to book for a week out). What good is an emergency vet when you have to book more than 3 weeks in advance? Absolutely none. Horrified at the service and treatment at Cavan Hills. New building = higher prices. RID: 69016
Click to report rating    11/5/19   5     3     5     5   We have had good experiences during bad times. They cared for our chinchilla's. They have affordable overnight care rates. Another vet insisted on a general anesthetic for most procedures, this vet performed them without and our chin was better that way. All in all much better. RID: 68701
Click to report rating    4/29/19   1     1     1     1   This is a horrible, horrible vet clinic. Do NOT go here. They have no compassion for the animals and Dr. Maser is only in it for the money. Stay away. RID: 67958
Click to report rating    1/3/19   2     5     4     3   I've gone to Cavan for 3 different issues relating to my dogs. Years ago, I was disgusted with the front staff and I still feel the same way now. Yesterday was my last visit with them. Here's my opinion: Front staff can make or break a clinic. It's time Cavan find competent people to work the front. If you like: being ignored when you come in, go to Cavan. If you like staff who don't know how to book appointments (wasting your time, gas, and answers for your much loved pet), go to Cavan. If you like front staff who don't communicate with the veterinarians, go to Cavan. If you like being pressured to pay despite lack of service, go to Cavan. If you like being rushed out the door, go to Cavan. If you like being 'just a number, go to Cavan. If you like feeling defeated, gouged, angered and upset, go to Cavan. The front staff will make sure to deliver. Dr. Cirone, you are amazing. To the clinuc owner, please find competent, caring, organized front staff. RID: 67178
Click to report rating    9/22/18   5     5     5     5   Dr. Bahlmann was just lovely and so patient when I had to put down my dog of 12 years. She explained everything that was going to happen, and even assessed my dog to ensure our decision was the right one and we knew what we had to do. I would certainly recommend this animal hospital. rw Port Perry RID: 66815
Click to report rating    3/21/18   2     3     1     1   I took my beloved Quincy in cause he was in pain. After numerous visits and $1000 my sweet little dog died on Sunday. I was never given a diagnosis only X-ray's and medicine. My heart is broken. RID: 65802
Click to report rating    9/12/17   1     1     1     1   We took our dog there in an emergency situation. He ate a cob of corn and needed surgery to get it removed. Normally we would go to our vet but we were visiting a cottage and was not near home. Surgery went find but we got a call the next day saying that they had lost our dog. He was put on a slip leash which was easy to get out of and ran across the road to a cornfield. We have not seen him since. We live 45 mins away so by the time we got there he was gone, due to the fact they probably scared him off. We never should have taken him so far from home especially when the vets use poor leashing on an area that is open and high trafficked. RID: 64628

5/2/17   1     3     1     1   We took our parrot it there because it was having problems pooping and Dr. Kyle Elias said that he would have to put our bird under. I explained that I was not comfortable with that because birds don't handle that very well and they often end up dying. He assured me in a condescending way that it'd be totally safe and there will be no problems with that. So with no other choice we reluctantly agreed. Half an hour later he says our bird died. (When we brought it in it looked in perfect health). He was ignorant in the way he told us. When I went out to get something from the car outside he told my wife and then billed her for the visit before I could come back in I was out for maybe 2 mins. No apologies no nothing. If you want you bird to live DO NOT BRING IT TO THIS CLINIC!!! And if you do DO NOT LET Dr. Kyle Elias ANYWHERE NEAR IT or you won't be taking it home with you !!! Worst vet I have ever met !!! We will never go back here again! RID: 63526
Click to report rating    4/21/17   1     1     1     1   Just put my golden down ,he had lymphoma and was struggling so we decided to end his suffering. I really feel that the compassion was lacking especially by the veterinarian, she continued to refer to my male dog as a her even though I kept correcting her. And then when I question of he was really gone she said oh yeah they twitch a little after, his heart has stopped and he's brain dead I felt it was very on caring. Anyway I truly feel caven is truly about money and not the pets,I will no longer use them as my vet. RID: 63423
Click to report rating    11/29/16   2     4     3     1   Watch out for the up-sell. Every minor issue requires blood work, x-rays, and IV's. Every effort is put forth to save the unsavable then guilt you when you have the common sense to not put your pet through the extra pain. Very disappointing. RID: 62098

3/7/15   1     1     1     1   Dr. Maser is a perfectly competent & professional individual, as are the technicians which I encountered in my time here. They were helpful & answered all questions. This is directed towards Dr. Nancy Shand. She performed a spay surgery on my 4 year old large breed dog in Feb/15. In a few words; Within 36 hours of surgery, my dog's sutures, which were an inadequate material-I was informed by my usual vet that the 0.4 monocryl used on her incision is typically used in gums-had all but ripped open, & my dog began hemorrhaging uncontrollably. She underwent 2 hours of emergency surgery at my usual vet, lost over a litre of blood, suffered cardiac arrest & thank goodness, pulled through. She had been bleeding since the time of her initial surgery & had blood clots attached to each pedicle, which were only ligated once, that could rival golf balls. I never received a call from Dr. Shand at any point. Within 3 weeks, Dr. Maser compensated us for additional expenses + cost of initial surgery. RID: 56190

9/29/14   5     4     5     5   Great prices, best in the area. Good staff service lately. Ive been going to this clinic for over 10 years now. The recent staffing changed in the vets there is very positive. They have brought in some good veterinarians who know more about exotics then in the past. I don't find any more vets in my recent visit that have trouble with english like in the past. Communication is excellent. Staff are great and the Vet Techs on staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Only complaint is the facility could use some updating. RID: 53788

7/27/14   4     3     1     2   I gave up on this vet after using them for 20 years. Dog stayed in a cage for 12 hours awaiting dental surgery due to "emergency cases".problem is that they are an emergency specialized vet and this is the normal. Had a vet call me to perform a biopsy on my dog who was under leptospirosis quarantine.. later when I followed up there was no documentation of this and no one knew what I was talking about? Also had a cruciate ligament surgery performed and no after care was given until the vet tech became angry and demanded a vet to give her proper after care instructions. Was a great vet until they expanded, now there is no continuity of care. I've moved on. RID: 52762
Click to report rating    7/20/14   5     5     5     5   Have used this clinic twice in the last year. Last Aug had to have my one cat put down as she was ill. We were an emergency appointment on a sunday and was nice that there were no extra costs. The Dr. and staff were all very compassionate, very professional. Just had my one dog there for his vaccinations and my appointment was on time, dr very thorough and he was quite good with my dog who is very nervous and stresses easily. I like that their hours are 24/7. My husband works shift work so this makes it much easier to have our animals taken care of. Thanks to all of them for taking such good care of us. RID: 52647
Click to report rating    1/30/14   2     3     1     4   My few experiences have been bad. Last time I waited 1 hour for my booked appt and then another hour to get a urine test results. I was there around 2.5 hours total. I have a Great Dane and they just do not seem to know alot about sensitive nature of the breed. To help, I do provide recommendations on vaccs, spay procedures, etc from experts on Great Danes incl. the American Vet Associate, and they fight me on those. One particular vet whom I have seen several times, just seems to be guessing at a diagnosis each time I go in. I have better results, just guessing myself. Looking for a new vet. I'd recommend this vet for routine things like check ups and vaccs (not for special breeds) but anything more complex than that, find someone else. RID: 49558
Click to report rating    1/29/14   5     5     5     5   My wife and I have lived in this area for going on 18 years. We have been clients to Cavan Hills for the same amount of time. We have always been treated very well by Dr. Mazer , the staff that we have dealt with over the years . Now that they are a 24/7 operation, in my opinion they continue to do the best that they can with what they have to offer. It is not about whether the building is old, ( never dirty ) or there is custom furniture in the waiting area to sit your ass on , it is about the care that you receive while you are there. Dr. Mazer goes beyond the call of duty when it comes to caring for his clients and there pets . We have seen and witnessed this .He has saved more pets than you can ever imagine, through putting out the costs out of the Clinics own expense account. This is a Family owned business and in our books they are highly professional at what they do. Don't like what you see , go somewhere else, maybe you will get a real eye opener. Cavan Hills 100% . Click to report rating    1/13/14   5     4     5     5   Our senior cat became severely ill on a holiday and after examination, it was determined he had to be euthanized. We were not charged any emergency fees, and were treated with kindness and compassion throughout our ordeal. The staff were wonderful. We were very happy with the care we received at such a difficult time. RID: 49229
Click to report rating    10/29/13   5     4     5     5   I recently went to this clinic as my dog had gastric bloat which is extremely deadly! They helped me get her into the clinic immediately and had her on pain meds and diagnosed in minutes. They performed a very difficult surgery and fixed her twisted stomach & had to remove her spleen. During the surgery we were continuously updated on her progress. She made it through & was constantly monitored, babied & spoiled. A couple of days after, she went into liver failure. Dr Chouinard & Dr Winters took over & did everything possible which saved my dogs life. Everyone was professional and kind & rooting for her to survive against all odds. The vets got together every morning & came up with a new plan to help her & they did! It was costly but seeing all of the medications, care, time & people they had with her helping her to pull through this was amazing. I have never been so impressed. I was allowed to spend as much time with her as I needed. They saved my girl & I will be forever grateful! RID: 47973
Click to report rating    8/27/13   2     2     1     1   My Great Dane was misdiagnosed and died as a result. Vets had different $ for same services. One vet referred us to a VEC in Toronto for a test up to $5000.00, same test was performed 10 minutes away in Peterborough for $75....we spent thousands and lost him anyway. They phoned 2 weeks after his death only to find that he was misdiagnosed and could have been saved. Wouldn't recommend. RID: 46560
6/11/13   2     1     1     2   very unhappy, dirty old building. Long waits. I've talked to people who say they've gone downhill. RID: 43059
Click to report rating    2/12/13   5     5     3     3   I went to this clinic one time as an emergency on a Sunday. I was very impressed with the staff and the way the clinic was run. My dog isn't very friendly so they allowed her to come and go through the side door so she didn't have to interact with any dogs in the waiting room. I did have to wait for a while to see the doctor. Also when he left to get meds for us, he was gone a long time. Cost was reasonable for the services provided and I didn't mind paying the extra money since I could be seen on a Sunday. Best impression came from the staff who were very friendly and made me feel welcome. Would definitely recommend this clinic. RID: 40370

Click to report rating    8/14/12   2     3     1     1   very unhappy; took our dog there for severe diarhea, brand new vet ordered expensive tests and did not do a physical exam - had to ask her to look at the dog's bum and her response was "there's too much hair to see anything"; ordered antibiotics. less than 24 hours later was there in the middle of the night on emergency cause the dog was in such distress; first vet completley misdiagnozed the problem - second vet saved dog's life. wrote a letter requesting money back and have been waiting 5 weeks with continued excuses about not having time to check our complaint. way overpriced; appointment times mean nothing, you can wait for an hour past your appointment; quality of care has gone steadily downhill now that Dr. Mazar is minimally involved RID: 36503
Click to report rating    8/8/12   2     4     1     4   We needed to see a vet for our cat. Who had a scratch/infection on his nose. We had made the appointment a day earlier, as it was quite urgent. We ended up leaving for a few reasons. The clients couldn't control their large animals, they had us waiting 30 minutes past our appointment and the secretaries/nurses were talking to friends/clients who had walked in 20 minutes before us, wasting time when animals needed to be seen. We were previously happy with this place, but this visit has made it quite apparent they have let their professionalism slip and it has cost them clients. RID: 36355
Click to report rating    7/14/12   5     5     5     5   WE have used Cavan Hills for many years for our dogs and cats and have found the sevice to be excellent. Our scheduled appointmentws are always on time, the veterinarians communicate clearly and answer our questions so that we have a clear undersatnding of our responsibilities when we leave the clinic. The receptionists have always been helpful and polite. Most noteable is the differenbce in fees at Cavan Hills comnpared to elsewhere. They do not charge an ememrgency visit fee because they are open 24/7 and their fees for standard procedures are less than the othe clinics in our area. It is without any reservation whatsoever that I give Cavan Hills my highest recommendation. RID: 35642
Click to report rating    5/25/12   5     5     5     5   Outstanding!!!! I have 4 dogs which all have been treated by this clinic. Never a problem - excellent staff!! RID: 34492

Click to report rating    4/9/12   2     2     2     2   We took our cat there 1 year ago and were told her blood work was perfect - that her increased drinking and voiding might be due to a tumour but at her age (our cat is senior) they wouldn't "go poking around for that". We were not alerted to the possibility of renal insufficiency which is what became apparent 1 year later. Every time we have been to this clinic, there has been a different vet on site. This lack of continuity, compounded by what appears to be a disorganized and rushed staff, plus quite severe limitations with comprehension and expression of English for one of the vets, has created repeated bungling and communication problems. Bottom line: our cat was traumatized unnecessarily and we will no longer go to this vet. RID: 33419
11/5/11   1     1     1     1   I came in with a sick budgie, which is an emergency situation. A person with a dog came in 10 minutes after my appointment was due to start, and they took them in before us. 30 minutes passed, and several other dogs were brought in. The receptionist and vet tech spent 10 min/dog asking questions and examining them. They did not once bother to look at my bird. 40 min after my appointment was supposed to start, we heard the vet tech say that they were going to have to triage the patients. There were 4 other dogs: One had a sore leg for a week, one had arthritis, one very old dog was panting, and another dog wasn't eating as much as usual. It was obvious that they were going to examine these patients before us, and make us wait. The dogs had ailments that weren't going to result in the dog dying anytime soon. A sick budgie is a very serious situation. The staff acted as if our situation was trivial and unimportant compared to the others, and I am shocked at the poor treatment we received. RID: 28871
Click to report rating    10/23/11   5     5     5     5   We have used the Cavan Hills Veterinary Services for our cats and parrot. I must say our experiences have been very positive and well worth the drive from the city. The staff is very genuine and care for the animals. RID: 28530

Click to report rating    4/4/11   5     5     4     5   Wonderful staff that were there for us in our time of need. Our dog went downhill very fast and they tried everything to no avail. The called to check in with us through treament and that was greatly appreciated. Sadly we had to put him to sleep and even that was done with care and compassion. They are open 24/7 with a veterinary in the building at all times. Great service when it is the middle of the night and your dog is very sick. RID: 24103

Click to report rating    12/11/10   4     4     4     4   I feel that Cavan Hills is one of the best clinics there is. How many vets will rescue as many animals as Cavan Hills vet does? I am an owner of one of their rescued animals. They do truly care about the animals they help!!! RID: 21369
Click to report rating    11/5/10   1     1     5     1   Beware! They actually had the nerve to ask to give my dog a Rabies shot before euthanizing my dog! I guess veterinary greed doesn't have limits. Why would a dog that is being put to sleep need a Rabies needle first? How devestating is it to put your companion to sleep, but then have to argue with them that you don't want a rabies needle? Shame on them. I would NOT recommend this clinic at all. RID: 20661
