Our 8 year old cat who had never been sick was not his usual perky self & by evening attempted to pee but was unable. I could tell he was not feeling well. By morning (which happened to be a blizzard snow day!) he was weak, dragging his hine legs & still no pee. I called our vet who usually sees him as well as several other vets in area, because of the storm, the only one open was Boston Road A Hosp. I called & they said it was a "life or death situation" and to bring him right in!I did just that & they took his crate & whisked him away immediately telling me he needed pain med. It was down hill from there. The bill presented to me by the veterinarian first was over $3,000 & I refused. Then another print out came in at $2,000. Told less stay hours. I denied that statement & told them to just catheterize my cat & I would take him home. Told he would need more med's & another drug to relax him to perform that procedure. I could not stay any longer as the storm was getting much worst so l

I've also had problems with Boston Road. Some of their vets have atrocious bedside manners and don't adhere to professional ethical principles. I have been several times for emergencies. IMO It is best to plan for emergencies in advance so you don't get completely soaked. I suggest finding a private practice that has reason to care bc they are concentrating on building a solid reputable business. Also, if you have an emergency maybe it would be best to go to Tufts though they will soak your bank account also. I will say that I met the most wonderful vet at Boston Rd when I brought in one of my cats for an emergency. This cat ended up being diagnosed with asthma. Meeting her I think was an anomaly though. I suggest that you do your research and find a person you can trust and then line up a plan in case of emergency. IMO Boston Road exploits your emergency and vets are not held accountable for quality care. If I have to pay thousands of dollars I at least want it to be quality care.

When my 5 yr old lab got sick on a Sat, her regular vet treated her but then referred us to Boston Rd for overnight care. My dog was so sick she needed to be brought in on a stretcher, but the first thing I remember them doing is getting an imprint of my credit card. For one night of ICU and tests was $3000,a nd they couldn't find out what was wrong. All the while she was getting weaker and sicker. Finally, on Sun morning they said they could do "exploratory" surgery for $6000 more, but they might not find anything and she might die before, during or after surgery. AND, I would have to go back down and pay them before they would touch her. I ended up euthanizing a young dog that had been healthy 2 days prior because I couldn't afford to go $10,000 into debt. The staff and doctors were kind and communicative, but this facility is owned by a big corporation that only cares about money.
