I brought my dog, Kona, to Bowen Veterinary Services about 4 years ago because she suffered a spinal injury. The vet, Alastair, attempted to take x-rays of Kona, but in doing so, had to wrestle her to the table while she howled in pain and resisted him. I offered to make Kona sit and lay down (she followed my commands), but Alastair ordered me out of the room and watch behind a glass window. I watched as his assistant laid on top of Kona, and Kona kept resisting and was terrified. They never completed the x-ray, but had they let me assist, we could have successfully gotten it. It was upsetting to watch my dog be handled so brutally, and I couldn't understand why Alastair wouldn't allow me to assist. He's a man with few words and no negotiation.
Alastair wasn't able to determine the problem through his diagnostics and suggested that I leave Kona overnight for observation, so she stayed there awhile. Alastair promised to phone me with an update, but that didn't happen for most

NEVER EVER show that you love your animal or the end price is highly raised!!! Took cat there & was was charged $2400.00 for a simple case of the sneezes! The cat was there for one night only! I was given a pre-estimate of $1290.00. Alister Westcott reviewed it& thought he was totally reasonable! NOT! Staff are very pleasant, but know what a scam their vet is perpetrating!

Our cat needed emergency attention and subsequent emergency surgery. The staff made time to see us, get her assessed and have the surgery needed on the same day, a Friday afternoon. Everybody was very considerate and professional and the vet was excellent in explaining the problem, and the options available to us procedure and cost wise. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or to go back again with one of our animals.

I have been a client with the clinic for well over 10 years and I have been very happy with the clinic. I appreciate the vet being available 24 hours a day and I have called on him at 01:00 and 06:00 and he has always made himself available. For a small clinic I am impressed with the facilities that are available and the fact my animal can be treated on island and not have to take them into the city. What I like most about the clinic is the abilities and knowledge of the vet. I trust his knowledge and the fact he will provide the best care available, outside of Canada West. Finally as far as value for money I do not find him any more expensive than a vet in Vancouver, but having said that I do not make my healthcare decisions based on how much it costs, rather it is the quality of care.

I feel my animals have had excellent care with the vet and he has always been available to me after hours, including a call once around 1 am. The vet always took the time to explain my options and what the preferred course of treatment was. For me competence is the deciding factor in my decision to whom to take my animals to and I have been impressed with the vet. As far as monetary value, while vet care can be expensive, I never felt the vet was any more expensive than any other vet, nor did I feel he was suggesting treatments or tests to increase his bill. I always felt his primary concern was the welfare of his patients.

We have had several very positive experiences at Bowen Vet Services with our dog. Staff have always been professional and caring and the veterinarian is very skilled as a surgeon. We recently had to take our dog for fairly major surgery and were very happy and confident with the care he received.

IMO it's all about the money. If you don't go there regularly or go to some other vet he sends you home with a letter saying "cuz you don't go there if you call him out you could be charged more" My dog needed 4 surgeries last week. I took him to Canada West instead.

Does not seem to be the least bit interested in the animal but more in getting as much as he can possibly bleed out of us islanders. Captive audience! I think NOT!

I have to concur with the wild discrepancies between estimates and actual charges - sometimes to the tune of a thousand dollars or more.

On three different occasions, was quoted one amount for services, only to be charged almost double the quote after service was rendered. The last time I had even written on the admission form that if anything additional was found to be needed during surgery over $200 more than the estimate I was to be called. Even this didnt change their standard gouging after the fact practices. Guess who had to call her husband to come over as I almost passed out . . .

Gives a verbal quote for services (in our case surgery), then went over that by double without a phone call advising.
