Click to report rating    11/18/21   1     1     1     1   took my kitten in over a head injury . it was just swelling in her face . had to take her elsewhere days later as she was vomiting and lethargic . we assumed the trash meds VCA gave her (both of which were not only high doses for her size , but one said - off VCA'S own website , not to give if there is head trauma - which she had . the second med said not to give if one other NSAIDS - which the first med was . so the second vet flushed it all out & she was on IV fluid from severe dehydration . she kept regressing so he took blood and found she contracted Feline Panleukopenia , given she was only ever an indoor cat & NEVER met another cat , we were told she HAD to have contracted it from VCA . they killed my kitten , failing to be properly sanitized . why ask if shes vaccinated if proper thorough care isnt taken into consideration ? she didnt deserve this ???? Click to report rating    4/27/20   1     3     1     1   I went to this clinic on emergency when my cat had a muscle spasms or seizures after feeling not well for 2 days. You would assume doctors working with animals know how to approach animals but apparently it wasn't the case in my case. Dr. Anthony Abo El Saad wasn't even able to examine the cat "because she was aggressive and was hissing at him" so he came up with some random explanation that she had this muscle spasm or seizure cause she sniffed smth. toxic at home. I asked him if he felt multiple lumps on her chest which I felt at home and he said no. The next day I went to our regular vet they examined the cat and found out that her lumps spread a lot and these are cancer lumps. How you can call yourself a doctor if you don't even know how to examine scared animal and telling owners some weird stuff out of nowhere... But they didn't forget to charge me $156.45 for Emergency exam... Terrible service and such unprofessional doctor should not be treating the animals! RID: 69204
Click to report rating    2/6/18   5     5     5     4   Had to bring my dog here after he was having some breathing problems - the staff took him in immediately - paged the vet to an exam room STAT and started running tests on him. They asked us his history and was very thorough. After a chest xray it was found that he had long time lung cancer, and not a lot of hope for him going forward - we had to put him down. The process, although very sad, was peaceful and the staff were all very compassionate, especially the vet, Dr. Melissa Tannahill. She was respectful, answered all our questions, was very patient and made the experience slightly less traumatic. If we need 24 hour vet service in the future, we will come here - hope we don't though. Thank you Guardian. RID: 65537

10/10/17   1     3     1     1   My dachshund had a disc rupture and I was told to go to guardian. The surgeon was very good and my doggie can walk, but that was the only good thing about my experience (although the most important!). The front desk staff and intake staff were horrible! The intake staff told me that it was my fault for buying a dachshund and she likely would never be able to walk again. The front desk staff were rude and the first thing they asked for was my credit card, which they immediately pre authorized for $5,000. The care was also EXTREMELY expensive - the final bill was over $6,500. Unless I have a major emergency, I will NEVER go back. RID: 64813

7/6/17   1     1     1     1   I have never seen such disrespectful, rude and belittling staff in my life.and not only to me I heard them being very rude on the phone to customers too Very RUDE. I was treated like dirt and all they were worried about is money and cost and absolute zero care for life's greatest companion. The so called vet came in and stepped over my sick puppy and started taking about cost and money showing me cost sheet And signing something before even asking anything about my pet!!!! Worst Place In Edmonton!!!! DO NOT go here. Beware !!!! They are only about the money and triple the cost of anywhere else for everything!!! I needed eye drops for my puppy and they wanted to charge me 95.00 And did not want to just give me a prescription where I could get them for 20.00 at G&E pharmacy. AGAIN BEWARE for the well being of you and your pet avoid this place ! RID: 64107
Click to report rating    6/22/17   1     4     3     3   I took my dog to the clinic due to vomiting and diarrhea. Antibiotics were prescribed. This was my second dog in 48 hrs given the same antibiotic. One dog was given 4 times the dosage of the second dog even though she weighed less. Called the clinic. Reception advised I was given the dosage the vet prescribed so I should talk to my regular vet when they open in 2 days. An overdose of the antibiotics can cause neural toxicity, so it appeared one dog was given an overdose or one an underdose. I requested a vet callback. The next morning i call again. The receptionist never submitted my request for a callback. I request again. At 10:45 pm i call again and insist on holding until i speak to a vet. 20 min later vet tech advises that this antibiotic has a large safe use range and both vets are right. Requested twice to have office manager call me to report receptionist but a week later and no response. If this has been prednisone instead of antibiotics my animal would have been dead. RID: 63988
Click to report rating    3/6/17   5     5     5     5   Dr Colin is amazing, I brought my lab in who was dignosed with cancer. He successfully removed it, we have been back several times since, and I just love the way he is with my princess. He is very gentle and kind with her, as she is very sensitive.A huge thank you to him and the staff. RID: 62928
Click to report rating    11/10/16   5     5     5     5   Our dog tangled with a porcupine in our yard late in the evening. The staff at Guardian was professional and caring and our dog was promptly treated. Quills were removed and our dog came home with us. Best part, no exam fee as the quills were only lightly embedded and could be removed without sedative. Great experience. RID: 61989

1/9/15   5     5     5     5   We brought our 7 year old Golden in as her knees were in bad shape. We got her through a rescue and apparently she had blown both knees out when she was young. Lots of scar tissue and unable to weight bear on the right leg. Dr Fowler was AMAZING. He thoroughly explained the TPLO surgery and went over other surgeries we had researched and had questions about. Very informative, knowledgeable and friendly. Gave us honest answers about each surgery and also the option of doing nothing. Both knees were able to be done at the same time as well leaving only one recovery period! When I called back to the clinic with questions the staff answering the phone new my dog's name just by me saying what procedure she had. Friendly staff, knowledgeable surgeon and our discharge nurse, Jen, took her time explaining everything and answering all our questions. As an added bonus our bill was actually $500 less than the original quote. Pleasantly surprised! Would definitely recommend this vet centre! RID: 55377

1/8/15   5     5     5     4   For EMERGENCY services, Guardian is amazing. Sure they're expensive, but that's because they are an EMERGENCY CLINIC. I came in with my dog late one night because he started having seizures. They kept him over night and ran all kinds of tests and even had a cardiologist come out and look at him the very next day. He eventually came home for a few days, but shortly after he started having more seizures, so we went back to Guardian. They met us at the door with a stretcher for my dog, and got him in right away. In the end my dog couldn't pull through, and we did have to put him down, but the staff was incredibly compassionate, explained the entire process and gave us all the time we needed to say good bye before we proceeded. Even the vet that was with us at the end to put him down shed a small tear. Yes, it was expensive. Yes, my dog died in the end anyways. But I would absolutely take any pet there in the future for an emergency. RID: 55368

1/7/15   1     1     1     1   It is too bad there isn't a lower rating than a 1. The least caring staff I have ever had the misfortune to run into. Took in my Guinea Pig who was clearly in pain and dying. Charged more than 2 1/2 times what my regular vet clinic would have charged for euthanasia. The doctor who injected the solution was very rough and clearly didn't care about the animal at all. When his heart finally stopped beating she jumped up and said "it's gone" almost gleefully and then tried to sell me a paw print at more than double the cost of anywhere else. It may have only been a guinea pig but he was a living, breathing creature that was in pain and deserved better in his last moments on earth than to be treated as an annoyance. I would never, under any circumstances set foot in this clinic ever again and I tell as many people as I can to stay away from this place. Edmonton has another emergency vet clinic downtown and I would go there if I needed emergency care for a pet again. RID: 55340

8/3/14   5     5     5     5   I can not say enough about the entire staff at Gaurdian! The veterinarians, vet technicals and support staff are all amazing! From our initial contact via phone, to us being greeted at the door via stretcher. My dog arrived in near death condition going into shock. She was quickly diagnosed as going into an "addisonian crisis" with (suspected) Addison's disease. The treatment she received at Gaurdian literally saved her life. The diagnosis was confirmed the following day. All procedures, costs as well as how to treat the illness going forward were explained in detail every step of the way. 2.5 days after we carried her through the doors motionless, we all walked out with an extra bounce in our step! I can not thank them enough!! RID: 52876

6/27/14   5     5     5     5   We were advised by our vet that Dr. Cockwill is one of the best internal medicine specialists in Alberta if not Canada & we definitely agree, as he's absolutely phenomenal!!! He is extremely knowledgeable, has amazing analytical skills, has excellent pet/people skills, & is able to take the symptoms of your pet & put the pieces together of the puzzle to make a quick & accurate diagnosis. It is because of Dr. Cockwill diagnosing our dog at an early stage of the progression of her life-threatening disease, our dog's prognosis is greatly improved as she will live a longer life & have less damage to her brain. We can't thank Dr. Cockwill enough!!! RID: 52306

5/25/14   2     3     2     1   My dog is terminally ill with cancer, too sick for chemo anymore, so all we can do is try to keep her out of pain. My reg vet prescribed the min no. of pain meds to get her from Thursday through the weekend, but as happens with dying dogs, she threw one up and needed a slightly smaller interval to keep her out of pain. So I found I'd be short one dose before I would be able to get to her vet on Monday. I called Guardian from sherwood pk, and explained my situation, incl the stress that putting the dog in the car would cause, and they told me that if I brought in her current pill bottle with the info, they could help. When I got there they refused. Even tho I was asking for only one doze (and my dog could safely take 3) and there was no way she could OD, even if I gave her that one with the 2 I still had left, they would rather have my dog in pain than sell me ONE pill. I had to get my vet in Van to fax an Rx before they'd give me any, and then charged 165% premium. Took 1Hr. RID: 51767

4/12/14   5     5     5     4   My visit was due to a late night emergency with our cat - Katie. The staff, Beth, Jeff and Candace(?) et al were warm and friendly and made our medical issue a priority. Everyone took time to thoroughly explain all the issues around Katie's visit. Ultimately we didn't have to spend as much as was discussed and Katie is fine. I'd recommend Guardian in a heartbeat for emergency service. RID: 51018

5/10/13   1     1     1     1   The reception has the worst attitude I have ever seen. I brought my cat in recently because he wasn't eating nor drinking and when I walked in no one was at the front. I had to sit and wait for at least 10 minutes before someone came to help us out. A girl named Melinda came up and asked me what was wrong with my cat. I told her and she rolled her eyes at me and asked me to follow her. I was utterly shocked at the way I was treated. I went into a room and a tech named Lisa came in to look at my cat. She barely even touched my cat and told me wait up front because it wasn't serious enough to be brought to the back. I was so mad that I left and went to EVEC who had the friendliest staff and most informative doctors. DO NOT GO HERE! They will milk every damn dollar they can get so they can treat you like trash. Click to report rating    3/22/13   5     5     5     5   I have only gone to this clinic to see Dr. Kim Hawkes Cardiologist and i have nothing but good things to say about her and the staff. They were friendly and really went out of their way to ensure my dog was confortable at every stage! Dr. Hawkes cares deeply for her patients and makes me feel better equiped to handle a dog with congestive heart failure who will eventually succumb to his illness. RID: 41246

12/7/12   2     5     5     3   My 9yr. old Rottweiler tore her CCL and needed a TPLO to repair the damage. My verterinary clinic referred me to Guardian for the procedure. I did some research and found that Guardian has an excellent group of specialist staff with lots of experience in treating this kind of injury in large dogs. What I was not expecting were semi incompetent veterinary techs and AHT's who were extremely rude and borderline hostile. I can understand that working in an "emergency room" environment can be very stressful on staff but that is not an excuse for them to make my dog and myself uncomfortable and increase our anxiety. On a more positive note, our consultation with Dr. Fowler went extremely well and he seems like a knowledgeable and kind individual. I decided that having an experienced and certified surgeon working on my dog is more important than how we were treated by AHT's so we went ahead with the surgery. The operation went well and I am very pleased with the recovery my dog is making. RID: 38921
Click to report rating    11/24/12   2     4     4     1   been here twice and will never go back the follow up and lack of info from staff was brutal, once they get your $$ they couldnt care less, have given them over 7 thou this yr and acted like they where doing me a favour. In fact after dealing with this provider and the vets who refered us to them my wife and I have decided we will never own another pet,and we are animal lovers service, basically this place is ALL SIZZLE NO STEAK RID: 38683
Click to report rating    10/14/12   5     5     5     5   Really good staff. They care all the time. When I came in the morning the front staff was very nice and offered us a coffee. We did come in a stressful situation and the veterinary did very well to explain what happened and why. Wish this clinic did vaccines and regular check up. Well done staff!! RID: 37809
10/1/12   1     1     1     1   I was afraid our dog had a stroke or seizure-wanted to get her checked out make sure she was ok. Reception not friendly-nurse that took her temp was nice-only seen her for maybe 3 min&were sent back to wait.Vet was the worst we have ever come across treated us like we were wasting her time never acknowledged my bro kept saying "Well I wasnt there so I dont know what happened". I told her what happened&how concerned we were her attitude was What do you want me to do about it. I asked if our dogs fat lump had somethin to do w/what happened she laughed like I was an idiot said "um no"-seen her for less than 10 min. Went to pay it was $165!! for what? to be treated like idiots¬ taken seriously there was no compassion we were concerned for our dog b/c she is gettin old.If you care about your pet dont take them here. I sent a complaint&got an email sayin someone was lookin into this&will get back to me that was Sep17-I replied Sep25 looking for a follow up its Oct1&haven't heard anything. RID: 37561
Click to report rating    9/8/12   1     1     1     1   My folks were visiting from out of town. Mom forgot the heart medication for their older dog. I know that you can have your vet fax a prescription to another vet and ALL vets (until today) will happily get your pets the meds they need. NOT Guardian. They demanded to see the dog, without even knowing what the drug was. I could understand if it was a controlled substance or something. Another vet in the same province says "this is what the dog needs" (and actually faxed the notes from the last three examinations) and they’re telling me that their extra-special weekend vet with an Audi in the parking lot needs to see my 15-year old dog too??? Needless to say, I decided to wait until I could see another vet than contribute toward paying down the mortgage on their marble tile and tasteful leather furniture in the waiting area. I definitely got the feeling of "show me your money" over "how can we help your pet"? The dog just saw a vet two weeks ago and was not an emergency case. Avo RID: 37070

5/10/12   5     5     5     5   My dog just had a TPLO done here, and I have nothing but GREAT things to say about this clinic. The facility is amazing, the staff was incredible, and Dr. Fowler was very thorough at explaining everything to me in great detail. They have all the most up to date equipment and they utilize the best methods of pain control. The AHT that discharged my dog answered all of my questions, and even helped us out to the car. Fabulous service. As far as everybody complaining about the price-- of course it is expensive, it`s a referral center. The overhead is huge. People don`t work for free and drug companies don`t give away drugs. To me, it was worth the extra money to have the surgery done by a board certified surgeon, at a state of the art facility. Two thumbs up from me! :) RID: 34166

2/14/12   5     5     5     5   I thought everyone did such a great job of taking care of my baby girl and me! She can be handful and a stress case and so can I! But if no body paid them...they wouldn't be open.then who would be there to save my dog in the middle of the night?? RID: 32231

Click to report rating    1/22/12   5     5     5     4   We brought our dog in for surgery. We are from out of town. After reading the previous comments we were a bit apprehensive. We were pleasantly surprised. The staff was nothing but friendly and accommodating. They even changed our appointment time at the last minute. The price was a bit high but having a surgeon that is the best in his field means our dog will have a shorter recovery time and a healthy pain free life. This far outweighs the cost to us. Thank you Dr. Fowler and all the staff for taking such good care of our beloved Tetsa! RID: 31711
Click to report rating    1/18/12   5     5     4     5   I was in for my dog, who got into a fight with another dog and had a puncture wound on the neck. The receptionist that dealt with me was WONDERFUL. (if you ever go there and the girl with medium brown hair, ask for her). She didn`t rush me at all and stepped away from her computer and looked up at me when I was talking. The vet was amazing as well. I would recommend this place all the time. Except for them not doing vaccines I will be going to this place every time. RID: 30665
Click to report rating    1/5/12   4     5     2     1   I found the Staff to be extremely friendly but the price was atrocious. I had to pay over $600 for them to treat my cat with an IV overnight, and an examination. They made me pay $800 upfront (before they would even treat my pet) and they are lucky that I have two debit cards because otherwise my cat wouldnt have been treated. As it stands I had to use half of my mortgage payment to pay for her treatment because my regular card was already maxed out for her vet appointment earlier in the day. This is a very top notch vet clinic but their clients are ripped off to the extreme to recieve the treatment of the pets. They care for your pet very well but I think that their main motivator is MONEY. If you want to spend a bunch of money before your pet is even treated bring them here! RID: 30309
Click to report rating    12/28/11   5     5     5     5   I thought Guardian was excellent! I have no idea why some reviewers say they're so expensive? I thought they were VERY reasonable-especially compared to my vet clinic!! They have state of the art equipment and very knowledgeable staff. We both felt very comfortable with the care and communication we received. We ended up having to put our dog down and our vet actually cried with us. I guess it comes down to how fast and how accurate you want a diagnosis. We would definately come here again-we want to give our pets the best care. RID: 30110
12/17/11   1     1     1     1   Expensive, slow, grumpy and ridiculously overstafffed with encompetence..After an hour of waiting with my border, who needed stiches to close aq chest wound (flap of skinm two layers of stiches, anesthetic, antibiotics, pain meds) i finally walked out and drove to 40 minutes to a country vet who fixed my dog in under an hour and charged me 380.00..Guardian's cost? "we can't say for sure, but it's a minimum 600..may go as high as 1200"..when they told me that, anbd I'm sitting there watching all the people, floating, doing nothing, and this grumpy little famle vet is rattling prices, that was that..pet care at its worst....don't go..google vets, there's lots in surroundiong twons, 20-30 mins away..and they will give you far bettter service..inter@telus.net if you want details on guardian RID: 29917
10/2/11   1     1     1     1   Horrible horrible horrible. Yes, they have a nice facility but that is an insignificant aspect when looking at the rest of the veterinary hospital as a whole. The staff, from reception, to health techs, to health tech assistants are extremely rude. I was also not impressed with the skill wise of the employees. My dad used to be a veterinarian so I am pretty familiar with what to look for in a good surgery or treatment...and my dog for sure did not receive one. Friends of mine have had the same bad experience at this place. Do not be fooled by the looks of the building. If you want your animal to get quality service at a fair price go to another Edmonton veterinary hospital. Plenty out there better than this one. RID: 28028
9/26/11   2     3     1     1   Our dog was brought in in a bad state and they told us she required immediate surgery, which she did. They acted like she was being rushed in right then and there so we left, asking that we'd be called when she was out since it was risky. This was at 8pm. We were called again at 830am as they needed to know our wishes since out dog was crashing. We found out that they did not preform the surgery at all, instead waited 12 hours to do anything but give her fluids. Our dog ended up dying. Granted, this may have been the outcome anyway and I realize they were busy, but if you are an Emergency center you should be able to handle emergency cases. We'll never know. Our dog hates the vet and it pains us to know that her last 12 hours were spent there. We would have rather had her comfortable at home if they were going to do nothing, and we wouldn't have been charged so high a fee for having her there over 12 hours. Wouldn't use them again unless last resort, and then I'd be awfully weary. RID: 27891

The only bad thing was that we were the only ones there ans had to wait an hour to be seen....but, we had been warned that the Dr. was attending to some very serious cases in the back part of the facility.      8/23/11   2     2     2     1   We have been trying, unsuccessfully, for 4 months to get a response from the cardiac specialist that is currently working out of this clinic. When our dog had two syncopes on Saturday and I phoned, the person who answered the phone #1 did not know what I was talking about; #2 did not recognize how upset I was; and #3 told me that the Vet would be in on Tuesday and would call us. I "thanked" her and told her that would be fine and I sincerely hoped that my dog did not die in the mean time. We have been the ones doing the halters, sending the information off to the U.S. for analysis and all we really wanted was to get the medications correct as our Vet does not feel comfortable in the cardiac area and needs some guidance. What is the point in having a Board Certified Cardiologist in Edmonton if we can't get any service. It is now Tuesday and our dog is still alive and currently wearing a halter and waiting for the Vet to call. Let's see how long it is going to take. RID: 27119
Click to report rating    8/17/11   2     2     3     2   I took my Pet there on Wed Aug 3, 2011. I was referred there because treatment at my local vet for infection was not successful over the last few months. It was a cold and unfriendly atmosphere. The examination rooms are empty and cold plus they do not go over your pets X-Rays with you just tell you what they saw which is not reassuring. As well they are very money focused, my regular vet goes over options for treatment and costs at this clinic they just keep adding up and up the totals for treatment. When I left they told me I needed $4500.00 worth of surgery and treatment for my cat but were not all concerned with her condition or if she would pull through they just kept pushing me to get it done. I called around and found that Crestwood on 149th street did the same procedure for less and actually cared about my pet or at least pretended they did which is something Guardian does not. Click to report rating    8/13/11   1     2     1     1   Emergency Clinic which is not emergency at all...most primary concern in ripping clients off instead of immediate care and concern for your pets. We brought out 3 weeks old puppy in for we wanted her to get dextrose and nutritional injection as she is set to have her antibiotic shot the next day. She was already weak that night, but the veterinary suggested BLOODWORKS first before she even do what we were requesting. She just missed the point that we were not taking our puppy to her for treatment but for IMMEDIATE RELIEF ONLY FOR OUR PUPPY TO PULL THROUGH until her antibiotic shot the next day to the vet of our choice which does not charge an arm and leg. But instead of looking after the immediate need of our dog, the vet ranted down how much it would cost us. MORE CONCERN WITH MONEY THAN YOUR PET. Bad experience. RID: 26916
