Unfriendly. Couldn't diagnose a stroke in a 13-yr-old dog. Instead said she got into poison somehow and blamed us. Will never go to again.

Took our beloved. Kitten to one vet they quoted a price of over $700 I sent e mails to most vets in town Island Vetrinary Hospital answered my prayers and called me the next day upon examination of our beloved kitten there was nothing we could do for him.But thanks to their generosity and caring hearts it did not even come close to the $700+ quoted by another vet. We will miss our boy thank you so much For working with us to help our boy.

I called today to get a quote from my regular vet (Island Vet) to have my female dog spayed and they were very nice about it! They quoted $425 and the price only included the medicine for pain. I took the time to call another vet office in town (Petroglyph) and the quote from them was 260+tax ($165 difference and also the second quote included nail trimming, tattoo and pain medication). Very disappointing and definitely not the first time this happens. Last time I had to tell them I received a lower quote and then they adjusted theirs but ended up being more than what was quoted and the doctor could not care less (now we had to pay $500 extra as another intervention was necessary) and we were never told that would be the case. Great people there but watch your money as they will charge more than what other vet hospitals will. Very disappointing

Wow! If you can do one thing today, stay away from this office. Asked for an estimate, and by the time our animal's appointment was over it was DOUBLED. Contacted the office for further clarification and it was strictly "policy", no apologize for doubling our bill in minutes and not even remorse. Definitely will not be attending this clinic again, and wouldn't recommend either. Poor practice and lack of compassion when it comes to owners. Take advantage of you while you are vulnerable with your pet.

Have been taking my pets (cats and dogs) to Island Vet for 10+ years and have only ever received the best of care. I have called and checked pricing with other local Vet's and have often found Island Vet cheaper - never more than other places. Staff is friendly, helpful, and most of all compassionate. A good example of this that they send condolence cards after you have to put a pet down. They also offered us a reduced rate on euthanasia when we had to put down my FIL's dog while we were young and broke.

Agreed to and paid $720.00 Bill for euthanizing and cremating two little dogs. I was absolutely hysterical at the time. After a month of grieving, I looked at my Bill and thought it seemed like a lot. I called four Vets and all quoted less than $400.00 for the same service. I told this to Island Vet and they refused to discuss why they charged me so much more or refund any of my money. BUYER BEWARE!!! I see others have complained about the same problem. I have complained to the Better Business Bureau and the College of Veterinary Medicine in B.C.

Brother in law visiting for the weekend and his dog ran out of his prescription and he needed a day of pills until he got back to mainland.Treated very poorly and they would not see him. Dog has allergies very simple problem to fix now the dog is really uncomfortable and you would think vets would put animal before money. Will never bring any of our animals there horrible argumentative staff

I have taken my cats to several veterinarians at Island Veterinary Hospital over the past six years, and every one of them was more like a used car salesman/woman than a doctor. They snuck in all kinds of hidden fees for unneeded things, and constantly pushed for all sorts of "extras", as if money is no object to pet owners. The last time I was there for a minor blood test for my young cat just to rule out a possible concern, they snuck in so much extra (a full geriatric workup!) that I ended up with a $300 bill and had to cancel my own much needed medical appointment because it blew my budget. I never would have taken my cat there for this had I known they would do this to me. It is because of places like this that people wait too long to take their pet in for medical care, and end up losing them needlessly to illness.

I've used Dr Langelier for about 7 years and have had animals for over 20, and have used many vets in that time. I completely trust Dr Langelier and rely on his opinion when my emotions get in the way of knowing the right course of action. I like their open door policy and have seen many clients in the back with their animals. This is not normal for other clinics. Dr Langelier does so much work for wildlife and the SPCA, this is just another reason that raises their level of care and services.

Dr Wintemute is my choice although all the Doctor's are caring and professional. Punctual almost without exception . I like that they support our SPCA. Veterinary care is expensive ( just like human medical care ) but the care cost estimates I have asked for have matched the reality.

Island Vet is a little more expensive than other places, but the loving care that my cats have received there makes it worth it. The vet who I see loves my cats and is as concerned about them as I am. The staff are friendly, and they have everything on site that is needed, from a well equipped OR to grooming services. I feel that my pets are well cared for and in good hands. I would recommend this clinic wholeheartedly.

Absolutely LOVE this veterinary hospital! From receptionists, to technicians, to all the veterinarians, everyone is super knowledgeable and compassionate. They go out of their way to make you feel like family because they genuinely care about you and your pets. They understand that I view my pets like they are family. I'm always provided with lots of information and choices so I can make an informed decision on my pet's needs. The offer good value and yet provide additional services that other clinics do not. They were able to perform ultrasounds on a couple of my pets when other clinics would have referred me out of town to a specialist. I appreciated that these procedures could be done "in house" at that time. The vets never give the impression that they're rushed when speaking with me. An appointment with a human doctor is crammed into 10 minutes! Bhe vets at this clinic always take their time to be thorough with my pets and to explain everything to me. Great hospital

I took my 8 year old dog into this clinic because it was close to home and Dr. Langelier had a good reputation. I had also seen him previously for a second opinion. My dog was running a high temperature and could not defecate. They promised to take good care of her if I would leave her overnight. They found a ball of tissue in her bowel and Dr. Langelier said it was a tumor. Later he changed it to scar tissue. He did surgery in spite of her high temperature without all the tests back. My happy, healthy dog was dead in 36 hours. Post surgery she was left laying in urine soaked blankets and she was burning hot. They never told me what the risks were at anytime. When I called them on the invoice Randy Langelier said we were ungrateful because they were kind to us?? I refuse to pay them! We don't know what she died from the surgery or what? Randy Langelier has sent 2 bills to date and I am still waiting for my dog's records. This clinic's reputation has exceeded its capabilities! Beware!

We brought our cat in to this clinic for the first time today. I was very impressed with the quality of care and time that Dr. Young spent with my cat and I. She was very gentle and loving with our cat while examining her and answered all of my questions without making me feel like she was in a rush. I chose this clinic because they went above and beyond to accommodate a special request for my cat's care when I called to make an appointment. None of the other clinics in Nanaimo that I called were willing to special order this requested item. Many sincerest thank you's to the vet technician who took my call and was not only knowledgeable, but found the item I was looking for. And to Dr. Young for the excellent visit today.

After waiting 45. Min in the exam room with my dog I went out ask what the problem was. The receptionist didnt even know that I hadn't been seen yet. She assured me that it wouldn't be much longer. After 10 min more I had leave and wasn't. Even acknowledge d that I just wasted all that time. I am currently shopping for a new vet.

The fee's for my dog's medication are close to double than what they are at the other vet clinics. We ran out, and this was the only place that was open on a sunday. It is the exact same box with same meds, but almost double the price! Even the receptionist seemed embarrassed when I called her on it. If you go here, you're paying way too much...this place is an absolute RIP OFF!!

After having an annual checkup on my chihuahua, I scheduled a routine dental cleaning. Dr. Young quoted me at $500 at that point, told me that a broken tooth that I had been concerned about looked okay and would not need to come out, and said that she could easily make his teeth look like new again. My dog went in today for his $500 cleaning, and I just received a call that he has 2 abscessed teeth that would need to be extracted (including the front tooth that I had been concerned about). This would require more sedation, and an extra $300! I told them that I cannot afford to spend over $800 for an elderly chihuahua, but the Dr. said that they had already started the procedure and that I basically have no choice. I am so upset and feel taken advantage of. I will never returh to this vet after today, and I will make sure to let everyone I know to stay away from Island Veterinary Hospital.

I took my 2 dogs to this clinic since moving here 3 years ago. The only good vet at this clinic in my opinion is Dr.B. Bambury. I was extremely disappointed with my last visit with Dr. Langelier as a huge problem my dog had was not even discovered...but I still got stuck with an enormous bill. I discovered the problem myself with research on-line. Dr. Langelier is not a good vet at all in my opinion Maybe others have had good results with him but I certainly did not. And they seem to charge more than other clinics too! I won't be going back there that's for sure.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO THIS RIP-OFF JOINT! I brought my newly adopted cat in with suspected ringworm. After an hour and 15 minutes wait, a culture was taken, and a "wellness check" (temperature taken, cat weighed) and my dog had is nails clipped. Bill - $240!!! And by the way, I was not asked if I wanted the $75 wellness check - it was just folded in, unnecessarily and automatically. The very bad thing about clinics like this, is that people will stop taking their pets to vets.$o much for vet$ caring about animals. They care far more about money.

Island Vet came highly recommended by the local SPCA and my groomer. I have 4 pets, 3 dogs and one cat. I had them seen by the vet for a consult and opening of files and dental about 7 months ago. We recently got our 3rd dog and had her spayed a month ago, 2 of her dewclaws removed at the vets suggestion and a consult. She went in for her booster today and they charged me a "wellness consult" again $70. All for a $10 booster shot. People in the community have told me about this overcharging but I didn't believe it. Now I know. They've been charging me for little extras ie: re-bandage fee of $30 plus taxses when dewclaw bandages came off, antibiotics when she was already on antibiotics, they've prescribed medications for my dogs digestive problem before they got the bloodtest and fecal reports back (their machine broke and they didn't have results for 3 days) so the last $450 bill could have been $90 for the meds and $70 for the consult. Don't go there, they are a rip off!

My cat has always been in top prime health when suddenly she took ill; not eating, sleeping too much, & less active. This was atypical of her. When I brought her in to island vet there were 4 people at the front counter & several doctors in the back with technicians. The assigned doctor seemed wonderful & genuine. I agreed for my dog to stay overnight. It became a fight for life or death with several life threatening illnesses diagnosed. The price went into several thousands of dollars. When I went the next day to see my cat 4 assistants were in the front. 2 drop ins. Each assistant asked why I was there then went to the back room for a few minutes & came back & ignored me. I went through this routine with each one. One named Trish was very aggressive & raised voice with anger "we're busy!", "wait your turn". Trish even interrupted often when I was talking to other desk persons, undermining them, even bullying them. Each time she interfered in some way. She appears easily triggered.

I took my cat to this clinic a few years ago with a bladder infection (crystals) and saw Dr.Carson or Carston. She was great and my cat was in such distress she prescribed something to calm her. I took my cat back a year or later with the same problem and another vet saw my cat Dr. Young and when I asked if I could get my cat a sedative she said no. I asked her to check the file and see thatDr. Carston gave it last time. She said that they would never prescribe a sedative for a bladder infection and implied that I was drug seeking for my own use. THE NERVE ! I have never used or abused medication or drugs of any kind. I have never been back and never will. Its a shame because Dr. Langelier was the vet to my 3 previous pets and was wonderful.

Absolutely horrible! They are way over priced. I brought my cat in there and they said they had to do all theses tests on her which would cost way to much and when I declined they told me they had no clue what was wrong... So I pretty much paid 100 bucks for them to tell me nothing.. If they cant diagnose a sickness they you shouldn't have to pay! They recommend so much stuff to get more money out of you, which is unnecessary. All they care about is money and not the health of your family member!

I had an ultrasound done by Dr. Crutchfield, I was in the room and saw everything. The help I recieved from Debbie and Tammy was excelent. However the attitude I recieved from Dr. Crutchfield was needless to say uncaring and condecending. My dog was forced to remain on his back when it was clearly not required. The ultrasound showed numerous issues that had to be addressed which she showed no concern for (tumors, and stones ect.) She highly recommended that she should take action when she returns from vacation....unacceptable to put MY DOGS HEALTH on hold while she goes and enjoys her life. She also performed a 3 needle biopsy without sedating my dog which I was later told shouldn't be done. She had told me that she has not seen prostate swelling to that extent and still made him hurt even more. She doesn`t even care about the health or well-being of our beloved family members. I will not be returning to this horrid place and I don`t recommend VIVH to anyone else if you truly care.

I found that they just threw on anything they could think of to raise my bill, they spay cost essentially doubled with all the add ons. I did not feel appreciated for my business and had the impression they just wanted me in and out. I also adopted a SPCA cat from there, only to find out from my new vet that they distinctly lied to my face about his health just to get him out. Not a place I will ever go back to, I want to know my vet genuinely cares, and Island Vet does not.

I had the misfortune of having my dog put down at Island vets. They were not ready for me - I had to ask to be put in a room or I suspect they would have left us in the lobby until the last minute. My dog defecated in the examination room and when I told the front desk they didn't come in and clean it up. The Dr. was 1/2 hour late and because they are not set up to to insert a catheter in the examination room, he took my dog to the back. When he returned he started the procedure and part way through administering the drug the catheter came out. He returned to the back with my dog to reinsert the catheter and by the time he returned my dog was half dead and well aware of what was about to happen to her. I asked the manager to consider developing a proper protocol for euthanasia and his response was to offer me a credit. If you value having your pet leave this world with dignity and with the care and attention you would expect I highly recommend you find another clinic.

I've had mixed impressions and sincerely think it's who I get to see and not necessarily all the vets there. We have one regular vet I am happy with - diagnosed pancreatitis, and didn't charge for the xray or ultrasound used to rule out intestinal block or pyo - just charge for blood tests also done. (I think I lucked out they were training new staff) However had not so great experience with another vet who "overdiagnosed" and recommended unnecessary treatment (which I declined, I know enough about what an xray can or cannot diagnose to know I didn't need one in this case) all that was needed was antibiotics which I had to demand - this vet wanted to do a GA to take a sample for diagnosis - how terribly overboard for a broken nail!!! Don't say yes to everything they recommend, and the swab sample taken instead didn't show any problems either. Needless to say I think even in an emergency I will chose my regular vet and try to avoid seeing just whoever.

This clinic is more expensive than other clinics in the area, they also sometimes seem to recommend treatment that isn't cost effective or necessary. Even though there are alot of different vets here they don't necessarily work as a team (it seems). Despite numerous appointments, we felt that our cat wasn't getting any better so we took her somewhere else and are happy we did.

We went here on an emergency and had to leave our baby overnight. The price was $800 and we were under the impression that staff would be there with her.Next day we took her out to the bathroom only to be provided with a lime rock area for her to urinate in.I could have rented a high class motel for that rate and she would have slept in comfort with US! Anyways they did all sorts of test and did not detect diabeties.A few months later with the same symptoms we went to Belleview Hosp and she was diagnosed with diabeties and her prognoses was not good.We enquired about euthanizing her at Island during her 1st visit and the prices were outragous($280) AND we would have had to put her carcass in the car overnight to drive to Parksville SPCA the next day.Needless to say we chose not to and after her 2nd episode and being told she would be blind in 6 months as her diabeties wa soff the chart we decide to do the right thing and let her go.The cost? $160..would not recommend Island Vet..

I saw Dr. Hye and Dr. Young. Brought my cat in and was told he `likely`had a fatal and rare cat disease - after $400 in tests, inconclusive! I began troubleshooting on the web and asked if it could be IBD instead, yes...I suppose it could be,I was told. Then they finally agreed to prescribe him a simple, $23 antibiotic...guess what, hes getting better! Oh, also they told me I should purchase their pet food, as it is easier to digest. I had brought in the kind I had purchased, and again...I was told, no get this kind. Upon further evaluation I noted their recommended food was not only higher in fat, but also contained less protein and ASH...certainly not the best choice. Further, the vet that saw my cat went off for 9 days. A different vet gave me his evaluation the next day, without ever having seen my cat. If you love your pet and want quality and honest care please dont go here! They are quick to take your $ and offer expensive testing, but are not quick to get back to you thereafter

We had to bring our dog in after he was hit by a car on a long weekend. The doctor had 2 nurses with her and all 3 were an amazing team. Unfortunately my dog did not make it through recovery but I would absolutely return to Brent and her crew. My only complaint would be they don't have a billing plan available to pet owners but then again they are not a bank either. I am extremely impressed by the facility, the staff and the compassion each of them showed to all of is during a very difficult and stressful day.
