The University of Minnesota was engaged to perform a rather straightforward surgery on my Service Dog, Mr. Pibb. Mr. Pibb was trained in Australia to monitor my blood sugar level.
Mr. Pibb was diagnosed at the University of Illinois with a thymoma - cancerous thymus gland. They were unable to do the surgery at the UofI in a timely basis and we were referred to the UofM Vet Medical center.
UofM confirmed the diagnosis, and assigned Dr. Shiori Arai to peform the surgery. The cost of the surgery was frightfully expensive, along with the three-night stay by Mr. Pibb. Dr. Shiori Arai confirmed the cancerous thymus gland was removed and advised there would mostly likely be no complications.
A year later, Mr. Pibb died of widespread cancer in his abdomen, apparently left behind by tDr. Shiori Arai.
Did they make an error? Was it just happenstance? I would love to have discussed it with Dr. Shiori Arai and the UofM, but they refuse to discuss the situation with me nor my at

Recently visited this clininc from Canada for a cardic specilaity surgery that could not be performed elsewhere - the whole experience was fantastic - our dog is now healthy and will live a full and happy life thanks to the U of Mn vets

In Aug 2010, our 3 yr old shih tzu Koda has a severe infection from complications of surgery done here in Thunder Bay, Canada.My vet suggested we travel immed to U of M hospital which is only 5 hrs from us.They were great, punctual and saved our dogs life.He was there 5 days, surgery, drugs etc,cost 1,800. I ran short of cash funds and they took the liberty to help me with a grant for companion animals. We met the requirements and were accepted for the max amt. His surgeon Dr.Wucherer was wonderful,always available via phone or in person. She even called to follow up week later via phonecall.Koda recovered and was with us until 2 weeks ago when he passed away from Cushings disease..unrealted to this incident.Thanks to this hospital, we has 3.5 more years with our baby boy..otherwise he would have died here due to limited diagnostics and lack of specialty care. So thanks again to Dr.Wucherer and staff for the best care in 2010.

I agree. I also took my horse to the equine center and was really impressed. The docs here really know what they are doing.

I brought my cat in to be evaluated for I-131 treatment for hyperthyroidism. Instead, during the exam, my cat was found to have an oral squamous cell carcinoma. The general vet that diagnosed her was very compassionate and sought the opinions of other vets (in dental and oncology areas both that very day. That is a great benefit of a clinic like that. After a firm diagnosis was made, I saw an Oncologist to discuss possible treatment options. Again, this vet was also extremely compassionate and knowlegeable. I had ongoing questions afterwards and both the regular vet and the oncology vet returned calls the same day...and the oncologist even returned a call to me on his day off, and spent 1/2 hour on the phone with me. My experience was great. The cost was not cheap, but the expertise was well worth it. The wait at the pharmacy was a bit long. The senior vet resident I dealt with was very thorough. Maybe one complaint..the parking can be tough at times, very limited, and could be closer.

Brought in my cat, already under care by my veterinarian from an outside clinic, for fluids in the evening. She had a rare, untreatable but survivable condition that made eating difficult. The attending was a new graduate. She was arrogant, unwilling to explain her observations even though I explained that I held an advanced degree in biochemistry. Without our permission, she called our vet (left a message) ordering transfer of all records. She said we needed to turn the cat over for intensive care or else she would not survive the night. She performed X-rays, which she would not let us have and would not release later to our regular vet (even though this is against the law). Two years have passed, our cat is in great shape. Oh, and a week after the incident, we received a bill from a radiologist in the UK for reading the X-rays that I can't prove even exist.

My 9 yr old cat was treated there for kidney failure. For a stay of Saturday to Monday cost me over 3000.00. And my cat died less than 4 days later. Never go there again!!!

Transparency and accountability for mistakes is lacking. The supposed customer relations contact person is not an advocate for clients but is good at providing defenses for the errors and misconduct of vets in training. The facility might have the best diagnostic tools--imaging, labs, etc., but it is the actions of the vets and their support personnel that matter the most. The vet residents seem to be more in-charge rather than the senior vets who are there mostly for consultation rather than hands-on direct clinical supervision. The charges are outrageous. Residents tend to order more tests than necessary and owners should not be footing those bills in addition to having their beloved pets be a practice and experiimental living specimen. Granting the vet center is a training facility, the administrators need to provide a structure and instill a culture that will provide a win-win situation for both clients (sick pet is safe) and the vets in training (to get adequate experience.

The U saved my dog's life. I am grateful for that. (I will also be paying back Visa for the next three years!) The doctors, students & techs were great. If you want to try to do everything this is the place to go, but you will pay a lot! They reccommend everything in the book, some of which I declined because it seemed unreasonable or unfair to my dog. They did accept my decisions, though. It is frusterating how many vets you deal with, because it depends on who is on shift. My dog had at least 5 doctorsin 4 days (emerg vet, interists, surgeons, etc). And you get different recommendations from each doctor. There is lots of waiting to be able to talk to the vet and get questions answered because they are so busy with other cases.
