She was kind, caring, compassionate and should i ever need to go there again (hopefully not) i would hope it is her! She is just fantastic!!! RID: 70498

11/8/21   1     2     2     1   Our dog was rushed to this clinic on Thanksgiving Fr's ay. We were told she was dying of cancer in her lungs. Her own vet saw her X-rays 4 days later after Thanksgiving and told us it was pneumonia. She was put on an antibiotic and is recovering. We payed over $900 to have her misdiagnosed. We told them she had chemo for Osteosarcoma and that's when they stopped listening. Totally upset, disappointed and such a shame for what they did. Our dog was sent home with medication to keep her comfortable and we were told that we could call back to have her put to sleep. RID: 70163
Click to report rating    5/5/21   5     5     5     5   I used Central in spring 2019 for my 15 year senior dog, who was ill, very impressed with Dr Mackie's care and attentiveness. Then again in the fall of 2019 with another 15 year old dog , Dr Bell did a thorough exam, listened to my concerns and proceeded with treatment . Very happy with the outcome. Then sadly a couple of weeks ago, April 2021, I had to have my very ill 16 year old senior girl put to sleep, the team working that night were exceptional, compassionate and very professional, I appreciated the gentleness Dr Bell had with my girl and the time he took explaining the process and talking with me after.I highly recommend this Hospital . Click to report rating    10/4/19   2     5     3     1   I have had 2 occasions to use this clinic, my dog became very ill vomit blood I rushed her there and had to leave her over night. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The bill for 24 hours was just over $1200. I was called by the vet that if she didn’t eat soon she would deteriorate so I picked her up and brought her home to try and get her to eat she is a poor eater at best. I agreed is she got worse I would bring her back. I recently gained access to my chart and the notes say I removed her due to cost??. Total lie! My second trip was what I believed was a urinary tract infection only to be told it was crystals in her bladder? $400 later and following their instructions she continued to get worse so I took a urine sample to my vet only to learn she had a horrible infection! Please please please if you have issues notify the college of veterinary medicine. I am disgusted this is our only option for emergency care! RID: 68605

Click to report rating    1/11/18   1     1     2     1   Horrible, horrible vet clinic! The vet and technicians were very careless, and unprofessional. My little Shih Tzu puked blood and we had to take him to the emergency hospital, which is only one available at night. The vet took my little guy inside to take blood sample. We heard him screaming there. He's normally nervous when he's with some strangers. So we didn't worry about the scream very much. After he was brought back, we noticed his tail and bum hair was shaved without being notified. I asked the vet, Dr. Meggie, why my little guy got shaved. She only said the tech shaved his hair off because he was too nervous and pooped blood. Poor little guy. The shaving gave him bad razor burn and couldn't walk for days. I would suggest not to take your pet there to avoid being tortured and ill-treated. Our experience told us this vet hospital treated our little guy like an animal that needs to be slaughtered if he's sick. Very very terrible service. RID: 65358

5/15/17   5     5     5     5   We needed to rush our precious little dog Spencer to emergency because he suddenly became very ill. Upon arrival, he received immediate attention by compassionate and caring staff. A special Thankyou to Dr Jill Harrison who explained everything clearly and in an easy to understand manner. Unfortunately, our little guy could not be saved, but everyone involved made an incredibly difficult situation as bearable as possible and we are very grateful for the care and compassion we all received. Considering everything involved, we feel the cost was more than fair, and would not have been surprised if it had been more. We are so thankful this facility was available to help us thru a very difficult time. RID: 63645
3/4/17   1     2     1     1   My husband had to rush our dog in the middle of the night to the clinic because of a punctured lung and multiple broken ribs. He was scared and terrified and extremely vulnerable at that time and unfortunately in fear said some things he should not have said to the staff. They managed to suture the lung closed and called us to pick up our dog and told us we needed to take her to Victoria Emergency clinic for further surgery that they could not do at their clinic. When we showed up to get the dog we were told to wait outside until the police came to escort us to get our dog the whole while she was struggling to breath and hang onto life. We took her to Victoria where they mended our dog and treated us with kindness and compassion. Five months later I had to take my dog to the clinic because she had something stuff in her throat and was choking. I was told my dog, myself and any family members were not welcome at there clinic even if my animals were dying they would not treat us. Shame! RID: 62916
Click to report rating    12/22/14   3     3     3     3   Let me tell you... someone should write the better business bureau... highway robbery. Staff seem friendly and I am sure are good people. BUT I actually had a vet tell me that the clinic owner is responsible for the cash grab. Seriously ridiculous. We went from $840 to $5000+ in under 24 hours... oh, and did I mention they misquoted not once but twice! Then proceeded to tell us anything we were told on the phone wasn't true. If you have to go here GET EVERY ESTIMATE in writing. Merry Christmas. RID: 55131
Click to report rating    5/26/14   3     3     3     1   I have required their emergency service a few times. I find their staff friendly but considering they specialize in Emergency Services, you spend a very long time waiting. I also find their fee just for meeting with a vet is exceptionally high. My most recent experience with them was for a severe gash on the back of my dogs leg. It was 2-3 inches long but very deep, they only used 3 large stitches which broke in less then 24hrs. There is definitely room for improvement, but I would use them in an emergency if my own clinic is closed. RID: 51784
Click to report rating    5/7/14   2     2     2     1   VERY EXPENSIVE!!! Take advantage of people when they are upset. $1100 for couple xrays, IV for dehydration, blood test, couple of pain meds, overnight stay and that was it! RID: 51481
Click to report rating    1/2/14   4     5     4     4   Staff care will depend on the vet you happen to get. I have seen a couple less interested vets but the majority are really good! They are open 24/7 so obviously the operating costs are higher than normal but the immediate care and being able to call anytime make it worth it! I've been in twice for emergencies and a few times to donate blood and appreciate all the care they have given my pet. RID: 49036
Click to report rating    12/15/13   5     4     5     3   I find staff friendly, knowledgable and compassionate. RID: 48794
Click to report rating    12/15/13   5     5     5     4   These people are amazing! Considering they are open 24/7 365 days out of the year. I would put all my animals care in the hands of these amazing people at any time. The compassion they have shown my family and I is beyond words. Although a little pricy my animals are worth it and knowing they are not government funded I am happy knowing there is a place like this on the Island that I can take my animals to. I will be sure to pass on the good work to my friends and coworkers.. Thank you Again Central Island for all that you have done for my family of animals! RID: 48792
Click to report rating    12/15/13   1     3     1     1   This was the most traumatizing vet experience my family has ever had. My dog was having seizures and unfortunately this is where my regular vet sent us on the long weekend. Over the course 2 days, my dog had 48 seizures, 23 of which were grand mal seizures. One vet there was kind but the other would not listen to what we were telling her. She only wanted us to commit to spending a lot more money than we could afford to do a bunch of tests. Based on the breed an what was going on, the nice vet agreed with us....unfortunately, she went off shift and we ha to deal with the other vet. She actually told us that our dog was not having grand mal seizures. As we kept going home with our dog and my children stayed by her side as she continually flopped on her side, convulsed and foamed at the mouth. After so many, his brain function was not working. Still the vet wanted to do these expensive tests when what our dog needed was to be put to rest. RID: 48790
Click to report rating    12/15/13   1     1     1     1   Unfortunately the vets seem to care more about their bottom line than the actual well-being of the animals under their "care". Had my own negative experience with them a short while ago regarding an elderly dog, and now a good friend is going through a hideously traumatic experience with her puppy and is having to seek alternative care for her fur-baby. Also apparently truthful, valid, opinions aren't welcome on their FB page, if they don't "approve", seems anything less than 4 stars is arbitrarily deleted and removed - to enable them a false , inflated rating. Nice to know that when there's issues they simply "delete" them instead of address them. Maybe this should be brought to media attention since they seem to think they can just ignore it. RID: 48789
Click to report rating    12/15/13   1     1     1     1   Took my dog in on Tues 8am to be spayed. Only scheduled surgery of the day. They never started surgery til 4:30pm. Said they got busy in the afternoon. (Why wasn't the surgery done in the morning?) My dog was not right at release at 10pm, nor the next day. By Thur, she had fever/infection. By Fri was dripping bloody discharge. They said it was normal. It soaked a dressing in 1/2 hour. They blamed our dog for licking (she hadn't) Said we couldn't prove she got infection from there. It is now Sunday, 5 days post surgery, she was still weeping overnight and this morning and is currently at another vet where she will probably have to undergo a second surgery to find out what the **** they did to her. Last night I wrote on their FB page asking how to contact owner and I did a review. They have removed both and blocked me from commenting. I will NEVER EVER take an animal there again. RID: 48786
Click to report rating    8/19/13   1     4     3     2   My own experience here was ok. Nothing fantastic. My dog needed her bandage changed over a long weekend when my vet woudn't be open, she got in an out quickly but they were a bit disorganized with their paperwork at first. My sister however, called me in tears after seeing doctor Westcott for her old, sick ferret. He recommended euthenasia, by was not caring or compassionate at all. His language and demeanor made her feel like she was a bad/neglectful pet owner. I have personally witnessed her trying her hardest to make his last few months of life as comfortable and healthy as possible and don't feel like its necessary to make someone who is already upset feel even worse about having to put their beloved pet to sleep. Needless to say we will not be returning here unless it is a late night emergency. RID: 46373
Click to report rating    3/4/13   1     3     3     2   Their post-operative care instructions were inadequate -- almost non-existent. We ended up taking our dog to our own vet after the stitches from Central Island came out after two days. After comparing the job done by my own vet to the sewing job done by Central Island, I'm convinced they did a sloppy rush job. RID: 40846
Click to report rating    12/5/12   5     5     5     5   Amazing staff - they really got to know my dog and still greet him by name when I come through the door. And with the help of CanWest Veterinary Specialists we were able to diagnose my dog's rare illness and give him the best quality of life possible. Had I still been living in Alberta when he got sick I really doubt he would still be with me. Their knowledge and dedication to finding a solution was really comforting. Also, they did not force any unnecessary tests or expenses on me which was a huge relief as a student on a budget. They don't make a rating good enough to express my feelings for the entire team. Click to report rating    11/24/12   5     5     5     5   We were extremely pleased with our experience at the hospital. Our cat was injured and because our regular vet had not been as thorough in their treatment as,I believe, they ought to have been, we found ourselves needing veterinary services beyond regular business hours. Thank goodness for CIVEH! The hospital's facilities are very new and aesthetically pleasant. The vet techs are all very polite, thoughtful, compassionate and well informed on treatments and medications. We only met two of the veterinarians in the clinic, but we can say that Dr.Langwith is our new favorite vet in town. She is very compassionate and caring, and recognized that our poor cat was not difficult, only in pain. I was very pleased when Dr.Langwith said, "she's a lovely cat", and I could tell she meant it. We had been feeling very sad and angry that our cat might need to lose a limb due to earlier potential negligence, but 3 weeks later, our cat is healing well and her pristine self. Thank you Dr.Langwith! RID: 38675
Click to report rating    9/18/12   1     3     1     1   HORRIBLE, CONDESCENDING VETS!!!! EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE!! THEY DO NOT KEEP YOU INFORMED, THEY DO NOT STAND BY THEIR QUOTES>>>NEVER,EVER GO THEIR!THE VETS THERE ARE RIDING ON THEIR LAURELS AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PRACTICE AS THEY DO! EXCELLENT VETS ARE DR. BRETT HAYWARD AND DR. IAN LAURIE. RID: 37277

Click to report rating    5/30/12   5     5     5     4   We were very impressed by the service we recieved from the veterinarians, techs and secretary, as well as the facility and atmosphere itself. After our 6 month old French Mastiff was hit by a car we raced him to the clinic to be greeted by staff who immediately began the diagnoses. While our dog was healing over the course of his two day stay, the staff continously gave loving care, attention and medical treatment. As well as provided us with frequent updates and reasurance all while being proffesional. We would undoubtably reffer this wonderful clinc to friends. Thank-you again to everyone on the service provided. RID: 34629

Click to report rating    3/23/12   2     3     2     1   Took two year old vomiting Labrador to Bellevue. 2 hours and $500 later, they diagnosed pancreatitis.Dog transferred to Central Island Vet Emergency Hosp Nanaimo because Bellevue did not have facilities for overnight intravenous treatment.Under their objection, removed dog from Central Island 24 hours and $800 later because Central Island could not 'gaurantee' existence of pancreatitis. Two days later dog still vomiting and Bellevue vet phoned to ask if we would consider surgury on 'possible' stomach mass Central Island xrays detected. Said NO. Day 3 dog STOPPED vomiting when we stopped administering sulcrate solution prescribed by Central Island on dog's discharge. Days 4 and 5 dog eating and drinking minimal amounts without vomiting. Day 6 dog passes stool containing 1/8 clothes dryer ball and elastic band intertwined and tangled with hair and grass. Day 7, dog eating and drinking normally and returning to good health. Good vets and value for money Bellvue and Central Island ????? RID: 33101
Click to report rating    3/1/12   5     5     5     5   Wonderful facility, and very attentive staff in an emergency situation. Thanks goodness they were there for us when our dog was poisoned. RID: 32591
Click to report rating    1/27/12   1     1     1     1   My grand-daughter had a very sick cat and had to take her cat there - they got her to sign a paper that she cannot find out if they cured her kitty or put him down.I called because she has been crying (for many days now) and cannot get closure. I called the clinic only to have the person I spoke with say she wouldn't and couldn't help me by telling me anything. I feel this is very unfeeling and I will tell every one that I know that these people don't care about anything but money. Most likely they would be helpful to anyone who could afford their service. My idea was to only find out if the pet survived or was put down so that she could go on. Where is the heart? RID: 31842
Click to report rating    11/6/11   5     5     5     5   I recently had to rush my precious companion into the hospital late at night, they saw my boy immediately and diagnosed him right away. It came to a very sad end. I was a mess, neither me or my son could answer all the questions but they said not to worry and to take all the time we needed. The following day I made a request in passing, to an employee that hadn't been there the previous night. A week later I discovered she made what I had requested, happen. They all truly came through for me, my family and Charlie in so many ways. RID: 28873
