He underwent x-rays, ultrasound & CT scan, which confirmed the presence of a tumor. His lung bronchi were scoped, an aspirate was taken & the tumor biopsied. He got steroids & an antibiotic & was in an oxygen-filled kennel. His breathing & blood oxygenation improved. We found ALL of the veterinarians at the VSEC to be highly experienced, skilled & compassionate. He remained in 24-hour intensive care with the knowledgeable & compassionate vet techs ensuring his comfort. We visited him in the back anytime we came & they maintained telephone contact with us. Unfortunately, his cancer was terminal. I cannot speak to what Blue Pearl is like now, but I can say that this facility was the absolute finest specialty veterinary clinic anywhere in the heartland when we had need for their service & would wholeheartedly recommend them. Click to report rating    11/15/11   4     5     4     5   I had occasion to use the oncology part of this clinic in 2010. My dog had oral squamous cell carcinoma and I was told up front that any treatment would be pallative and not curative. He had 4 radiation treatments which put him in remission and we were able to make a road trip to NC in September '10 to meet friends who had other dogs of the same breed. We took videos of him running with the most active dogs there and it was 90 degrees that day. He had a ball on that trip. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and I had to have him PTS in December. Dr. Heather Heeb, the oncologist was very up front and called me after she learned he had passed. The only negative I had was that I would take him in early on his treatment days as I worked and sometimes there was no one to come out and get him. I said something and this didn't occur again. I appreciate the extra time they gave him and the ability to go on one last road trip. He loved life! RID: 29138
Click to report rating    11/9/11   5     5     5     4   I know this place is expensive. That is the only negative. But this is the place to go for specialty care, and I suppose you pay for that. I have had to take a number of my cats there and I trust these people to the utmost. Best facilities and expertise in the area. Brian Cellio primo neurology specialist for my Maudie, Sammie and Ittibitt. Dr. Layton has incredible surgical ability and did so on a Saturday morning when my Bowie sliced a tendon in his paw. But my favorite has to be Dr. Dennis. He treated my Misha for intestinal cancer, my Fuey for IBD, and there is no one else I would rather have had put my Maudie to rest at 19 when her kidneys failed her. All these doctors have such good hearts, but Dr. Dennis was the first I saw and he treated kitties who were in serious condition and I appreciate him so. I appreciate this place. A Godsend. Click to report rating    5/27/08   2     5     2     3   When my dog needed a large tumor removed, we went to VSEC first because I thought they were the best. We were very frustrated with the internal medicine vet that we had to get through first with a number of tests before he could see the surgeon. Although our dog was having discomfort, we were told there were a dozen dogs there so we'd have to leave him all day and they weren't sure when/if they could see him. After several hundred dollars and still no closer to a surgeon, we called Mission Med Vet. We were amazed the surgeon got on the phone with us, listened to our story and gave us a preliminary opinion. At MMV, we met other people in the waiting room with the same experience with VSEC. Recently, a friend relayed a similar experience. I think this is a high quality clinic, just more "business first" rather than "compassionate care". They were also pushy on payment - I'd guess they've been burned by nonpaying clients. We always pay upfront, we'll just pay MMV. RID: 8632
