*DO NOT TAKE YOUR BIRD HERE!*
Go to ANIMAL HOUSE or ANIMAL 911 which have authentic bird specialists. As of March 2010 Midwest "Bird" does NOT have a bird specialist!
We had a great African Grey Parrot for over twenty years which, as all-too-often happens to birds, suddenly became ill. We took him to Midwest. We called & visited a few times a day.
We realized we were getting too many conflicting stories about what was wrong & what should be done. We finally called & were told that he was doing much better, yay! We came in & his neck was grossly distended, his eyes glazed over, he didn't know we were there. We asked how/why the upbeat reports earlier that day & everyone (a later shift) said they knew nothing of any recovery--he had just been getting sicker.
Our bird died there a few hours later.
The intensive necropsy performed revealed that Midwest had misread xrays & blood tests, thus not treating the actual illness. Misdiagnosis, possible malfeasance, 1 dead bird. Shame!

Bad experience with bird being manhandled just to be told "nothing's wrong, she just likes to pull out her feathers."

I had a very bad experience with this vet. I brought my rabbit in for surgery on a jaw abcess. The surgery was nothing like what they described. After multiple trips, nearly a thousand dollars, I ended up taking her to another vet to be put down. In my opinion, the situation never got any better. They should have recommended that I put her down from the beginning when they realized the treatment wasn't working. Instead, for over a month, she was left in excruciating pain.

Until recently, Midwest Bird was the best exotic animal hospital in Illinois. Unfortunately the clinic's founder has retired and the staff has had a nearly 100% turnover. Their prices have always been outrageously high, but the care my pets received was well worth it. The new vets are young and while generally nice, are too inexperienced. The facilities are top notch in terms of equipment and cleanliness, but the clinic has no parking lot! Be prepared to park 2+ blocks away (the few 2-hour slots in front of the clinic are usually full) and lug a cage that distance. If you manage to get a 2-hour slot, that isn't going to be enough time. At it's heyday, the clinic was never good about promptness. Be prepared to spend more than two hours waiting even for routine appointments. The final straw for me was when I had to have my pet put down and as we were leaving, teary-eyed and grief-stricken, the receptionist demanded that we pay an extra $4.00 fee. I have not been back since.
