2/17/18   5     5     5     5   Dr. McDonald and staff are fantastic! They cared for our cockatiel for the last 10 years of her life, until she passed away last July of simple old age - she was 32. Dr. Anne literally saved her life twice and made the loss of sight in one eye as painless and comfortable as possible. Her and her staff's compassion when Rosie died made an incredibly difficult time just that little bit easier. There were the occasional freebies thrown in - i.e. she once paid for some blood work simply to ease her own mind. I've never felt unwelcome or an inconvenience and my questions have always been answered - sometimes late in the evening - but they have always been answered. And having been the emergency more than once, I've always been content to wait, knowing that Rosie was in the back with the vet getting immediate care (even if that meant just giving her heat and oxygen, to start). They accept your bird for who they are and I will always be grateful that we found Dr. Anne and her wonderful staff. RID: 65604
Click to report rating    1/19/18   5     5     3     5   This office is very busy, and appointments tend to be bumped by emergencies (as they should), but just something to be aware of in terms of 'punctuality'. Dr.Macdonald is amazing, and you can tell that she genuinely cares about every patient. Several years ago we had a critically ill parrotlet due to congenital defect - she stayed late into the evening to perform an experimental surgery on a bird his size, and called us at 10:45pm to let us know how it went, and also put per personal cell phone into his enclosure so we could talk to him and encourage him while he recovered. Truly above and beyond. RID: 65407
Click to report rating    5/23/17   5     5     5     5   Rating for Night Owl..... Five stars is not enough. Dr. McDonald is the best of best! I have a very sick macaw. I have never experienced this level of care in all my years of keeping birds. Everyone of the staff, are also incredibly amazing! Their kindness & compassion have been truly uplifting, at such a difficult time. If you want the best care for your feathered companion, Night Owl is it! How many stars would my birdy & I rate Dr McDonald, and staff? ALL the stars in the sky!! RID: 63711
Click to report rating    12/31/16   5     5     5     5   I cannot say enough good things about Dr. McDonald and the rest of the team at Night Owl Bird Hospital. Their care and concern for even the littlest of birds is above and beyond. I don't have a lot of experience with birds, just with my two rescued budgies, and when one of them, Kiwi, fell ill and died it was a comfort she received the best of care at Night Owl. Can't say enough good things about this vet and don't know what the bird community would do without her (just google the World Parrot Refuge to see all the good McDonald has done. From a Vancouver Sun article: "It wasn’t just a matter of moving or finding new homes for the birds. Many needed care. So between June and August, McDonald spent one or two days a week in Coombs, paying her own travel costs and charging nothing for her services to care for the birds." RID: 62277

8/4/16   5     5     5     5   Dr. Anne MacDonald and her wonderful staff are the best! They are exceptionally caring, competent and committed. I have taken my lovebirds to the Night Owl Bird Hospital for 21 years and am forever grateful for the wonderful, tender care they received all those years. You simply cannot find a better or more dedicated veterinarian than Dr. MacDonald. I highly recommend the Night Owl Bird Hospital. RID: 61268

3/29/16   5     5     5     5   I gave 5 stars even though incoming bird emergencies might make your wait much longer than you like. For those who complain about waiting, you will be glad if you have an emergency and your bird is seen immediately. And who is the multiple reviewer who uses a telltale "thirst for money" wording? Dr. McDonald has come in when the hospital is closed to treat my bird. I think my bird would be long dead if it wasn't for her. There's no other vet around who will give your bird its best chance for living if he or she is seriously ill. I dread the day that she is no longer practicing although I predict she will die with her boots on. Bottom line is that she has the skills and experience to save lives. For those who complain that she X-rays a lot, wait until it's a matter of life and death--you'll see. Rock on, Dr. McDonald. RID: 60160

7/23/15   5     4     2     4   I've brought my lovebird to this clinic for 2 emergencies and both times the staff was kind enough to let me in even before opening hours. Dr. MacDonald has handled my lovebird like he was her own pet. Dr. MacDonald saved my bird twice and could not be more thankful for it. Appointments are often pushed for emergencies, so make sure you have a lot of time to wait (it's worth it). Vet bills are high regardless to what kind of pet you have. RID: 57789

8/15/14   5     5     5     5   Brought in our little guy for a checkup and to relay some concerns we had. Met with Dr. Miller and she was great. She went through our concerns one by one and did a thorough explanation of things. No rush, no ambiguity. She was extremely friendly towards us and our feathered baby and the support staff were equally nice. Punctuality, like any doctor's office, was about 10-15 minutes; a wait, but a much lesser wait than most other doctors. The amount we ended up paying was lower than expected. This was our very fist appointment at Night Owl and we were extremely satisfied with the visit. RID: 53081

8/14/14   1     3     3     3   I just dropped by the Night Owl Bird Hospital today to book an appointment to get a band removal for our bird. The receptionist (the older lady) was very rude and gave us attitude. She asked us to fill out a form to the best of our ability which we did but we didn't know how old the bird was so she gave us the "roll-my-eyes" attitude. She was very snappy and impatient despite the fact that we remained calm. Leaving the hospital, I felt disrespected and angered about the way that we were treated. She clearly has no respect for people, I really question how she will treat the birds. I am hoping that I will have a better experience with the veterinarians when I go back for the appointment.  12/5/13   5     5     5     5   Respectfully, we are all entitled to our opinions. As regrettable as it is to read negative comments made about or of other people, we are asked to rate and write about our experience(s) at Night Owl Bird Hospital. We recently lost our beloved, beautiful and most precious girl (Java Finch) to an overwhelmingly sudden illness, then death. We were blessed to be referred by the emergency animal clinic to see Dr. McDonald at Night Owl. If you're seeking spacious comfort and immediate service for yourself, perhaps a visit to the beaches of Maui by private jet is for you. In which case, you probably shouldn't have birds anyway. There will never be 'perfection' in our lives. And, if you demand it from where you take your bird(s) for medical care, I'd like to read your experience and criticism of 'YOU' by treating them yourself in the comfort of your home. My wife or I were not the patient. Dr. McDonald and staff did everything for our girl. Their BEST is all they can do. This is who they are. RID: 48619

9/3/13   5     5     5     5   Any bad commets about this clinic are unfounded. Dr Macdonald is fantastic with birds. She was very understanding re:my financial position and was very reasonable as far as a payment schedule. I have had birds for years, dealt with many vets and she is tops. Gave me great comfort with her knowledge and put my little brokenlegged bird on road to recovery. He is now thanks to her happy healthy and back to his noisy nutty antics. She is a vet that cares. In no way did I ever feel over charged for her services. Little "Capote" my lovebird was given great care and now after leaving her office I am no longer worried or in tears over my best friend.  8/15/13   5     5     5     5   Our parrots have visited Dr. Anne and her staff numerous times over the years. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Dr. Anne and her staff are. If you want top-notch care, this is the place to bring your bird to. RID: 46305

8/13/13   4     5     5     5   We brought in an injured pigeon (wild). They took him in right away and were happy to follow up with a message when we phoned (2x) to inquire as to his health. We were impressed that they would even save a wild pigeon, whereas many vets/hospitals might auto-euthanize. Undoubtedly, the vet bills others pay helps to subsidize this excellent service. We were happy to leave a donation in the donation box for an obviously important, well run service. Clean, comfortable, welcoming environment, and obviously interested in bird/pet health. There is a vibe of compassion and generosity and love of birds. We don't have our own bird but would feel 100% comfortable recommending this excellent bird hospital based on our recent experience.  5/8/13   5     5     4     5   You will never meet a doctor who cares so much for your bird. Truly an amazing, wonderful lady with great staff who again, care about your bird. It is never about the money...they care only about your bird/family member. Dr. McDonald is there 24 7. The poor lady needs to take some time for herself. She has been my only vet since 1993. I would go nowhere else. So what, if I have to wait an extra hour or two at the clinic. It is for the wellfare of my feathered friend. I can afford to give that time to them...no question. I would highly recommend NOBH to anyone with a bird. In fact, I think it the only place to go with your feathered friends. RID: 42373

11/26/12   2     3     1     2   if i had other options, i would choose another hospital. Not to mention about the loooong wait even scheduled for an appointment (seriously, schedule less if u cant manage to be on time for appointments).Other comments have said staff are knowledagable which i highly doubt it because i have seen quite often that staff need to put clients on hold on the phone and seek answers from the vet while waiting for my appointment. The waiting area is always clustered with bird cages. I rated 2 for monetary value not that they over-priced their service but you can totally sense the thirst of money from the vet. After waiting at least 30 mins to get into the exam room, talk a few lines with the vet, then she will leave the room for other things, and you just get stuck in the room until she comes back. be prepare to spend at least 2 hours before you can get out of this place.  10/1/12   5     5     4     4   Incredible Exotic Bird care! Been a client for 20 years or more now and know the Dr. well. Most dedicated veterinarian and person you could ask for. Her knowledge is amazing where parrots or other birds are concerned. She has saved the life of more than one of my pets over the years. I can't say enough good about Dr. McDonald and her hospital! You certainly get what you pay for and this place is worth every penny! RID: 37569

9/25/12   5     5     5     5   I've been taking my birds to Night Owl for over 10 years and have always had great care there. Anne Macdonald and her staff really care about the birds and will take the time to help educate bird owners as well as provide vet care. RID: 37412
Click to report rating    11/28/11   5     5     5     5   Dr McDonald truely found her calling. I have never met a kinder, gentler vet. She cares just as much about you as she does your birds and I have found her staff to be just as kind and compassionate. They are dedicated to birds and recognize how important it is for a sick bird to be seen immediately. They have waited after hours for me to see a very sick bird when another vet, closer to home wanted to make an appointment for 3 days later! I have been taking my birds there for 8 years and have even boarded them while on vacation. It's a long drive for me but it's worth it for my birds to get the best care! RID: 29432
Click to report rating    11/2/11   5     5     4     5   Staff is caring and compassionate. If they feel your bird needs immediate attention they take it right in, even before your appointment time. Emergencies are always seen right away, which is really appreciated when it happens to be your bird! The facility is very clean, boarding birds seem happy. They see a lot of emergencies so sometimes run late, but that's understandable. Dr. McDonald is wonderful with the birds, just seems to know how to calm them down- they really seem to trust her right from the start. Costs can be high, depending on your bird's problem, but they don't seem out of line with any other veterinary hospital. Often owners don't know their bird is sick until they're really sick so that makes treatment more complicated. That's what happened in my case, and it was worth every penny of what I spent. I wouldn't go anywhere else! RID: 28773

Click to report rating    8/28/11   5     5     5     5   I have been taking my budgies to Night Owl for over a decade. Dr. McDonald is extremely knowledgeable and I think this is the best place to take your bird. Other vets don't study avian issues much and Night Owl understands what birds need. I appreciate that they also use unconventional treatments (we have used naturopathic medicines, over the counter treatments, etc) and have always had excellent experiences with this vet. Sometimes your appointment may run late as they commonly deal with emergencies but this is understandable. I highly recommend Dr. McDonald and Night Owl Bird Hospital for anyone that has a bird. RID: 27224
Click to report rating    8/22/11   5     5     5     5   Dr. MacDonald is the bird whisperer. She was so kind and sincere and she treated my beloved little bird with such care. I will be forever grateful. RID: 27105

Click to report rating    3/26/11   5     5     5     5   I'm so happy to be able to rate Dr. McDonald at the Night Owl Bird Hospital. She is as wonderful as every other review says and more. I flew my bird to see her from the other end of the Province and it was worth it. She will talk with other vets to consult and help them understand birds, she will phone you late at night to check in once the bird is home, she really understands how to reduce stress during exams for the birds, she even had her staff come into the room to hum to my bird to calm him down for the exam! Just far above and beyond. Never found another vet like her. The costs can be very high, but if you own a parrot that is part of your responsibility... it's not the dr's fault. You get what you pay for, and she is worth it! RID: 23867

She operated on our 16 year old 'tiel some years ago for a plugged reproductive tract problem. While the bird finally died we were amazed at her expertise and humane approach. She has looked after our two conures with the same level of caring and is currently helping us deal with the sudden loss of one bird.  11/8/10   5     5     5     5   Although my birdy is flying free over in Coombs now, Dr. Anne was his vet for many years. This woman is amazing when it comes to caring for birds. You absolutely know your bird is in the best hands. I once took a sick siskin there and I swear she had tears in her eyes. Simply the best avian vet there is and could ever be. RID: 20734
Click to report rating    11/8/10   5     5     5     5   When you see a vet take your bird into her hands and hold it against her chest, so gently, and when that bird just settles down and becomes pudding in her hands, you KNOW you have found top notch care. We have been seeing Dr. McDonald for many years. She saved our brown headed parrot from losing his tongue and has engaged in many collar fittings for our Goffin cockatoo. And I have first-hand experience with her waking up in the middle of the night to meet me at her bird hospital. Who else would do that? This lady earns her wings every day. She is tireless when it comes to her work, and I also shudder to think that some day she will retire. Too bad there is no excellent rating available for her. She is simply put, awesome, as is her staff. Everyone there has the same work ethics as she does. She is one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. Dr. Anne, you are simply the best, in so many ways. RID: 20729
Click to report rating    11/25/09   5     5     5     5   Dr. McDonald is truly one of a kind. She treated my iguana for many years. If she didn't know the answer to something she would say so, and then try and find the answers to the best of her ability. That would usually mean phone calls to some of her colleagues in U.S. who were reptile specialists. She always went above and beyond the call of duty for my iguana and I. You and your pets are definitely in compassionate, kind and caring hands with Dr. McDonald. I can't recommend her enough! RID: 15454
Click to report rating    2/28/09   5     5     5     5   Night Owl Bird Hospital has treated and saved the lives of my beloved birds for twenty three years. Dr.Anne McDonald has earned her wings in the next life for sure based on her patience and tolerance for we humans who too often harm or kill our birds with kindness and ignorance. The doctor runs a tight ship and has a devoted staff who honour everyone, bird, reptile and human alike with respect and dignity. They will always do what's best for the patient first, at the same time also try to save you money. Dr. McDonald has a heart of gold and a brilliant science oriented mind that is open to positive alternatives that prove healing. No b.s. She tells it like it is in a most gentle, non-judgmental way. I just wish she treated dogs too. RID: 11897
