Click to report rating    8/3/20   1     1     1     1   Long story short took my 11 year old short haired border collie Ringo in. I told them he was not barring weight on his back left leg.We waited in the parking lot for 3 hours and the vet called and said theres absolutely nothing they can see. They gave $200 worth of meds. A week/week and a half later I noticed a growth on his back left leg went in to have it taken off. We did 4 hours for a 2 stitch growth.i went Today when we called she said MULTIPLE MASSES WERE FOUND IN INITAL APRIL 23RD REPORT AND IT WAS ALL DOCUMENTED AND IT CHANGED FROM THAT THEY DID TELL US TO THAT THEY DIDNT TELL US BECAUSE PEOPLE USUALLY DONT GET MASSES CHECKED CAUSE THEYRE USUALLY BENIGN.SHE THEN SAID THAT AS OWNERS WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN AND FOUND ALL THESE LUMPS AND MASSES. WELL WHAT SHE SENT US WAS 6 PAGES AND MY IT WAS ADDED IN THE MIDDLE IF MY ORIGINAL 1.5 PAGE DOCUMENT I RECEIVED. Do not go to these people. Do not care about your animals or own up to any mistakes. Click to report rating    6/14/19   2     4     1     1   Really nothing but a money grab. Took my 13yr old in - I could hear her SCREAMING out in the lobby! She is so traumatized now - used to love going to her groomer.NCV bathed her while there - that was what caused the screaming. I said something to the desk and the next thing I knew, the vet was trying to tell me it was because there were attempting to do a test Outright lie. First dog we took in to have spayed - they botched the procedure, puckered incision from too-tight stitches, stitches ripped her skin, began bleeding and had to take her back. Their mistake but I still wound up paying more money. She was never the same dog. Do not use this vet - it's all about the bottom line. The only vet there that I would see again is Dr. Barton - kind and caring man. RID: 68125
Click to report rating    1/21/19   2     3     1     1   We questioned paying for a urine test that was left to sit for 3 days which tainted the results. However, they denied that it had any impact and would not refund the test. We also feel they overcharge and will try to run tests that aren't necessary if not challenged. We now take our animals to another vet hospital and the charge for an abdominal surgery and 2 1/2 days hospitalization and numerous medications and IV fluids was only slightly double the cost of a one night stay for a much more minor treatment (induce vomiting and given charcoal) at Calgary North. Click to report rating    11/13/17   1     1     1     1   NEVER BRING ANY PET HERE, they only want your money and don't care about your pet. Dr. Fisher eagerly tried to sell me an unblock procedure for my cat's urinary tract infection plus IV's for $2,500-$3,500 plus another potential $1,600-$2,000 if they have to go into his bladder. Dr. Fisher told me that I should either do this procedure or put him down. There was another option to just unblock him and put him on an IV for a few hours which was still $1,500. She told me there was no medicine that my cat could take to be helped. She told me this option RARELY ever works. After the $1,500 procedure he still had troubles today. I went to another Vet today and paid $500 for an unblock (same procedure Calgary North wanted to do for $5,500-$6,500)!! The vet at the other hospital I went to today also said the unblock procedure is often very successful. After his unblock today at the new vet, he is confirmed to be unblocked, the urine is much cleaner and is he doing well. I will be reporting them RID: 65053

8/4/17   1     3     1     1   Being the only rabbit specialists in all the north, I was forced to take my rabbits there for years. The reception staff has the highest turnover rate of anywhere, I never saw a same face twice. I brought a rabbit in to be 'fixed,' and it cost over $800.00. There were no complications but they insisted on extra tests and keeping her overnight. Then they almost killed her because they gave us the info/directions for a cat not rabbit. Once, I was given two medications, the first one was wrong, I had to have an argument with the receptionist, finally, in anger she says "Do you want me to call the vet and check!?" "Yes, please." I was right. So I looked at the second medication and IT was wrong, too. She went ballistic and would not hear me. So I went home, called and called for three days, when someone finally called me back, I was given a lecture on how important it is to get the right medication - as if it was MY fault. 2 examples out of MANY bad experiences. Expensive and bad care. RID: 64357

Dr. German was so nice and took the time to explain our options. Even the receptionists were helpful and all our questions were answered. RID: 64241

4/18/17   3     4     4     3   I took a sick and elderly pet here to be euthanized. It turns out that they chambered my pet (or that's what they call it). I didn't know much about the process at the time but later found out that chambering refers to a gas chamber that's so disturbing to animals that it has been banned in 27 states (even for shelters). And here I paid a vet and they took my pet away from me in its dying moments; they put it into a gas chamber. This vet clinic refused to let me be with my pet during its last moments of consciousness. This used to be a good vet hospital, but in recent years they've made some questionable changes. There are other better ways to euthanize animals and they refused to use a more humane procedure even though they're thoroughly trained for mask induction, sedation, and injection. Do yourself and your pet a favour and go to a vet that actually cares about your pet and not just about money and convenience for the senior staff. RID: 63388

6/27/16   1     1     1     1   Last night I brought my very hurt 7 week old kitten in. He had been fallen on my by son. The vet told me that he had a traumatic brain injury. They demanded a $750 deposit to begin assessing after telling me they were optimistic about recovery. I paid the $750 prior to any tests. At 10 pm I called to check on him and he was stable but not better. At 12am I called again and was told that I needed to come in as he was deteriorating quickly. I went in to sign the papers to have him put to sleep. After allowing me to see him for a moment I was taken to a quiet room. I was met by a condescending receptionist who demanded the remainder of the money ($1600 for 7hours in hospital). By this time it was 1:30am. After words she was told to get out and get the vet. I was denied the right to hold my baby in his last moments because I needed to call a friend to charge his card the remainder. Then they called me to tell me they completed the procedure. STAY AWAY FROM THESE CROOKS. RID: 60953

11/16/14   5     5     5     5   I really like Calgary North. Dr. Kelman was an excellent vet who took good care of my rabbit. He took time to explain things and when I got my meds, the dosages were clearly labelled. He took the time and my rabbit recovered. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The receptionist took the time to listen to me when I had concerns about my rabbit (when I took him to another clinic). The prices are not outlandish for an emergency clinic. Again, Dr. Kelman was very helpful and I just wanted to write this because I think good and compassionate vets should be recognized. He is even willing to look at an x-ray of my rabbit from another clinic so I can get a second opinion about my rabbit who died recently-talk about commmitment to the patient. RID: 54649

7/31/14   1     1     1     1   Brought my dog in because she was really sick. She ended up spending 4 days at this hospital. When I was able to take her home I noticed my dog was very sensitive on her left side. A few days later she developed a huge scab all on her left side. Took her back to the vet hospital and they were completely clueless as to what happened to my dog. They didn't bother doing any research to try and figure out how something sever can happen to my dog. All they did was give her antibiotics and a spray for the wound and left it at that. Didn't offer any other support or advice! Eventually I brought my dog to a specialist clinic/hospital and in their opinion she had 3rd degree burn and had to do surgery! Never again will I bring my dog to Calgary North Vet Hospital. Not only did they not take any initiative in finding out how my dog could have gotten injured under their care but they did not offer any support after. RID: 52845

7/13/14   1     2     1     1   I woke up to my 7 month old puppy having had passed away. I called this vet because it is a Sunday and no one is open. I needed to bring him in to be cremated and I want to keep his ashes, however, Im broke till tuesday (Payday) so I asked if I could give them the visa number connected to my debit card and bring him in and they said no. Meanwhile I have a small child a dead puppy laying out on the floor in Riggamortis! I asked what there fees are, Just for the cremation $150 plus gst to keep his ashes @208 or so plus gst. I got a call which happened to be a complementary call from the vet I took him to the prior day, he was sad to hear the dog passed away. I asked his what his fees were and if he wouldnt mind me bringing him in. Not a problem plus the cost $108 plus gst and that is to keep the ashes!! Not to mention he had only charged me $35 for an emergency morning visit. I will never go back to Calgary North Vet they are just scammers!! I wish there was more I could do than com RID: 52540

4/4/14   5     4     5     4   Brought my dog in the other night for vomiting and being quite quiet...saw Dr Barclay and she was very polite and responsive to my concerns. Options were given on what and how much we wanted. Dr Barclay was very patient considering we couldn't make our minds up...we never felt rushed or pushed into anything. Overall it was a very positive experience and I wish I was treated this good a human hospital RID: 50878

2/24/14   4     4     4     1   They charged me $2000 for 2 visits, 2 blood tests and an overnight stay for my sick cat. Then when I brought it in again, the third vet opened the cats eye and told me that it was jaundiced with probably liver failure and there was little hope. Altogether about $2500. I wished they would have looked at his eyes on the first visit. I won't be back. RID: 50068

2/12/14   1     1     1     1   Horrible waste of time, do not go there under any condition! Took my cat there after a trauma accident and they wanted to run all sorts of tests, almost 1200 dollars worth. I ended up better minimal blood work and one X-ray which ended me with a 640.00 bill, ouch. The worst part was less the 24 hours later my cat ended up dying at home. Thanks for nothing Calgary north, what a complete waste. RID: 49801

7/27/13   2     3     1     1   This place is a cash grab and rip off. I took my dog in as she was vomiting. Dr. Barclay only gave me the most expensive approach and not all of my options. When I went to pick up my dog a day later and $1,600 later, she was still vomiting. Also, I had Dr. Barclay and Dr. Radcliffe both contradicting each other on what might be wrong. So $1,600 later, I had no explanation and a dog that was still sick. I took my dog back again and Dr. Kelman did a quick check and gave me a likely diagnosis and recommended a course of action. The pills he prescribed cost $27 and the exam cost $120. The issue was resolved for $147. But not before they took $1600 from me for nothing. I called to speak to the GM, Doug Zeeman. He said he would speak to the vets and call me back. I have still haven't heard from him. Like all the others have said, avoid this place. Its a disgrace! RID: 45890

3/29/13   5     5     1     1   We waited an 1 hr & a half to see the vet. She assessed that my dog needed pain medication as he probably sprained his back.My dog is 2 1/2. She would not give the medication without testing my dogs blood work for liver & kidney function. At 2 1/2, I really didn't think blood work needed to be done (plus no history of abnormal kidney or liver function) So, turns out my dogs blood work was good ( no kidding). So, she handed me the medication & sent us on our way for a ridiculous amount of $525.00! The reason that I am so angry at this outrageous amount is because this is my 3rd dog. My previous vet (who has since retired) would never have A. Done the blood work unless absolutely necessary (my dog Steve is 2 1/2, with no history of liver or kidney disease) B. charged $300.00 for the blood work & collecting the urine (he wouldve charged significantly less) My previous vet would've charged for the medication & his time which may have amounted to around $150.00-200.00 that's it!  2/22/13   1     5     1     1   I spent $668.71 for them to tell me to keep an eye on my dog and bring her back if she gets worse, the next day I took her elsewhere and she was diagnosed with pancreatitis and got the help she needed- for much less $$ too! The doctor we saw was rude and had terrible bed side manner. She let my dog run and skid across the slippery floor to see me knowing that she had an ACL repair 2 weeks earlier, she also left without a word right before giving me test results to deal with a billing issue. At the end of the appointment she walked out without saying anything, I did not know if I was to wait or leave! Very unimpressed, will not be returning. RID: 40645

8/24/12   3     2     2     1   I call this the Calgary Rape Clinic and not without good reason. The charges for their services are through the roof & they run every test known to mankind before giving a diagnosis. Case in point. In the mid 90's my bf's cat had urinary crystals. It cost him $1500 to have the animal treated at Calgary North. I had a cat earlier this year with the same problem. My vet bill was $600 for 3 weeks of care at Transcanada. How is it that a service can cost 50% LESS almost 20 years LATER? The clinic has a sign in their waiting room stating that beligerance to staff will not be tolerated. That pretty much says it all. PET OWNERS BEWARE! I have it on good authority that Calgary North is buying up every clinic in North Calgary that they can get their hands on. Beware of the green & white logo and ASK if they are affiliated with Calgary North if you're not sure RID: 36782

6/8/12   1     2     1     1   If I could rate this clinic a zero, I would. I went there with a friend as she had to leave her little dog there for the day. When she dropped him off, she explained that he had grabbed something in the park and seemed to be choking on it. When we went to pick him up, we were told he was ready to go home and they couldn't get her to pay the bill fast enough. We were not allowed to even see the dog until she paid the $500 bill. What did she get for her $500?? a blood test and a urinalysis and a comment that the vet would call her later. I explained we weren't going to leave until we spoke to the vet, we were ushered to the back of the clinic and the vet couldn't explain the test results but felt the dog was better. Unfortunately, her dog died a few days later due to a bone being stuck in his throat. STAY AWAY from this clinic, they are incompetent and have been getting away with goughing people for years. Also the vet was extremely rude to us when we dared to question the bill!! RID: 34853

6/6/12   1     1     1     1   I am also convinced that the vets are on commission. I am not saying that your pet doesn't need to be kept (minimum)overnight for $1000-$1500, but be very aware of the cash grab mentality here. Compare the cost of giving my cat SubQ fluids at Dalhousie Station at $20.50, while here it is $59 (which was my original intent - that turned into overnight IV fluids, tests etc.) Go to any other clinic, unless an emergency and you live nearby.  12/9/11   1     1     2     1   Dr. Barton is the only vet at this clinic I trust. He has a human touch, genuinely wants the best thing for the animal, and goes the extra mile to talk about it with you. My cat had some pain at night after a urinary tract un-blockage, and as my regular vet tells me now, probably just needed a painkiller (total cost exam+med = $100). BUT the overnight vet, Dr.Chmielinski, asked how much we were willing to spend (as though the more the better), convincing us he needed more care - then passed the case on to Dr.Ratcliffe (who even mentioned euthanasia) - they racked up a $1500 bill for my cat. Dr.Iqbal (other overnight vet) never even bother to call back. It included so much medication (w/ unclear instructions) that he's now sick from it (diazepam should NOT be prescribed for cats with liver issues), that he's now been vomiting for a week and I've spent another $400 at my normal vet to diagnose and treat it (needed Xrays, enema, fluids). Unless you get Dr. Barton, go somewhere else. RID: 29726

9/23/11   1     1     1     1   Over priced!!! I called around to check pricing on a service I needed because I thought the price they gave me was high and they came in $250.00 more than the rest of the clinics (it was not an after hours emergency either).  7/10/11   2     4     1     1   I went in for a vet check and they charged me a fortune to get a "required" blood test done on my puppy even though they said his dehydration was due to the stress of changing homes and it was normal.  6/8/11   1     1     1     1   My rating is as low as I can go so that the message I am trying to impart will be felt. Staff and facilities are not a top priority for me. These people are generally good people in that they enjoy working with animals. Punctuality is relative too as there could be emergencies that throw off a schedule at any time. This clinic is known throughout Alberta - yes, even rurally - to be an outrageous cash grab. My vet was closed and my old rottie had licked at her stitches. She needed antibiotics not another surgery. The vet told us that she was in dire straits and needed emergency surgery. $1500.00 we paid for our old girl to endure another surgery (she had a lump removed a week previous). Our vet was shocked and very angry. He would have prescribed antibiotics. RID: 25486

6/1/11   5     5     5     5   Although initially abrupt, the staff became quite friendly as they came to know us. The facilities are adequate and the doctors and techs were attentive and, unless otherwise delayed by emergencies, respected the time allocated for appointments. Our cat required emergency surgery and had complications during recovery. There is no question that Calgary North was very liberal at spending our money, nonetheless our cat is alive because of them. I never felt that any process recommended was superfluous and was happy to pay knowing that they were more concerned with Frodo than they were with the state of my wallet. Granted, there were many deposits requested, and that rankled a bit, but in hindsight I understand the need for them. Kudos is due everyone who cared for Frodo, and thank you very much for saving his life. RID: 25345
5/17/11   1     5     1     1   Go to Dr. Torrance @ TransCanada Vet Clinic. He's down-to earth, practical & has your wallet in mind! No stupid expensive tests that are used as training material! RID: 25060
Click to report rating    3/25/11   1     4     2     1   We were at this Vet clinic on two different occasions, both were very bad expieriences. We had to have one of our doggies put to sleep because of heart failure... the female vet that was there almost made us feel guilty and less of a person for doing this. Maxwell was 17 years old . She did not even try to console anyone, simply asked if we wanted to stay or leave. I said I wanted to hold him and she would not allow me to!! AND at the end of thos horror they charged us way over double what another vet clinic would have, should have researched before we took him there. In my eyes, they are one big money grab!! One more thing, they charge about 25% more for for pet food that others too!! RID: 23860
Click to report rating    2/28/11   3     5     4     1   I have been to this hospital twice. The first time I brought my guinea pig in to get treatment for his foot. They gave me an ointment that wasn't very effective. It was expensive and the stuff I bought on ebay worked better. I was only there to treat his foot problem and the vet kept telling me that his teeth needed to be filed down for $400 to $500 and he would die if he couldn't eat. My piggy was eating just fine and his low weight was because he's very old. The second time I was in was for pet cremation services. We didn't have anywhere else to go because most clinics were closed at the time. Although I knew the Humane Society offers memorial services, it was a far drive and wasn't open this late so we went to Calgary North. I was pleased that the assistant was sympathetic and very helpful. Unfortunately, I found out later that they charge a lot more (about $200 more) for their services than the Humane Society. They definitely want your money. RID: 23211

The cat was there for over a week i went to visit everyday and called everyday to see how he was doing the response each time was different the nurse would say he ate some that day then someone else would say he threw up several times. Click to report rating    11/8/10   1     1     1     1   All they want is cash! I was told that my dog's bill would be approximately $2000.00 for an overnight stay plus some testing. I was shocked and amazed that the vet was so glib in his determination of the fees and told him how upset I was too. I will never take any of my pets back to this gouging group of vets as all they want is cash. They have no shame in their disgusing methodology to try to make the customers pay through the nose!!! My dog had been vommiting for approximately 8 hours and they couldn't give me a diagnosis without running a battery of what proved to be very un-necessary tests. When I told them that there was no way that I could afford it they came up with a new strategy which only cost $250. Strange that there was a different method after I told them I couldn't pay $2000! Don't take your pets here as it only makes them charge these ridiculous rates for un-necessary services. Go to C.A.R.E or any other 24 hour emergency vet,and boycott this veterinary cash grab!!!! Click to report rating    10/17/10   4     5     4     2   I have only been here once recently when my dog had to come in for emergency at 1am. There were 2 other clients before me, and I waited around 30 minutes to be seen. The place was clean, but the front staff didn't seem very attentive. The Dr. was very thorough with the check up and asked many questions, and explained some of his observations with us. Although he seemed genuinely concerned of our dog's condition, it also felt like he was pushing hospitalization and tests on us by making us panic about how "critical" the situation was. However, that may have been the truth and he might have saved our dog's life, and I am grateful for that. The consultation was $79, with $60 emergency fee on top. The fees for IV/oxygen/tests/overnight care were high, so I would only come for emergencies. The Dr. did the "blood pressure tests" free of charge when he saw how upset we were with the quote but wanted our dog treated. He quoted us for $700, but charged us $510 at the end for 7hrs care RID: 20353

Click to report rating    6/21/10   1     1     1     1   Vets there are paid commission. The higher the bill the more money they take home. You are just a cash cow for them. RID: 18486
Click to report rating    6/19/10   1     3     1     1   I agree with most other people. They truely are more concerned about money here. They are rushed, do not explain things thoroughly and charge a very steep price. All and all, I had a bad experience which ended costing me the life of my dear animal as they kept running test after test with no treatment and no answers. Please use Severe caution when using this vet. RID: 18456
Click to report rating    6/17/10   5     5     5     5   These guys saved my dogs life. When another Vet clinic left her surgiery incision cropped and haggard, they fixed her up, got the fluid out and now she is happy, healthy and the front staff all know her by first name. I have 17 animals and now they all go there - veterinary medicine works in a way where you get what you pay for..the more expensive the better the medicine- now do you wonder why trans canada is so cheap? Click to report rating    6/7/10   2     4     3     2   I took my dog here when she had ingested rat poison. The Vet was only interested in payment before care ... ans the care was very insensitive. RID: 18281
Click to report rating    5/31/10   1     4     3     3   Front staff are all rude and too busy talking together rather than serving you when you walk in. Vets are very knowledgeable RID: 18185
Click to report rating    5/23/10   3     5     2     1   Although I do not doubt that the majority of the veterinarians care about the welfare of their patients, it all seems to ride on the almighty dollar. Unless it is an emergency, go elsewhere. RID: 18082
Click to report rating    5/4/10   2     2     2     1   This is about my female Syrian Hamster that I took to the Calgary North Veterinary Clinic. I was not pleased with the vet’s decision on the medication (later I found out that it is highly toxic to small animals) that was prescribed, it ended up being fatal. She died within the week of taking this medicine. Before I gave her this medicine I asked the vet is it safe to give a little hamster and they said “yes it is, and I prescribe it all the time”. Also I was not given any information sheet about this drug or to watch out for specific side effects. Also they sold me expired food product, when I called them to confirm that it was expired, their response was “we’ll give you your money back”. I took her to another vet for help, but it was too late. I will miss my hamster dearly. Calgary North is about money first, then your pet secondly. I would not recommend this clinic. RID: 17802
Click to report rating    3/21/10   1     3     1     1   I have spent over $5,000 at this vet over the past 4 years with my two lab dogs. Horrible service, horrible consistency. Others have said it and it is true: money is all that matters to this clinic. We are moving to another. Don't waste your time or money here. RID: 17156
Click to report rating    2/23/10   1     5     4     1   I was horrified when we were inside waiting for a vet at calgary north to come euthanize our beloved rotti, the experience was awful in itself but as the vet finally walked into the exam room he said with a smile "so what are we doing today" My husband and I were shocked and in tears and ultamately never went back! I have never had such a worse experience and it was ovious the vet never took the time to look at the chart! Run away from this vet clinic!!! RID: 16754
Click to report rating    2/18/10   4     4     3     1   Front Staff are great! However, if you want to throw your money away, go to this vet clinic. Only seem interested in getting as much money from you as possible. RID: 16664
Click to report rating    10/14/09   2     3     3     1   I was not very impressed. My puppy went into get spayed and when they were finished they forgot to call us to pick her up. The stitching job was horrible and they sent her home without any medication. When we tried to ask about pain meds we were told 2 different things. One med tech tells us no she doesn't need and the other is freakingout cause she didn't have meds... RID: 14683
Click to report rating    9/13/08   5     5     5     5   I THINK THEY DO AN EXCELLENT JOB...THE VETERINARIANS, ESP THE EVENING EMERGENCY VETERINARIANS THEY ARE ALWAYS FRIENDLY AND COMFORTING DESPITE OFTEN BEING BUSY. I RECCOMEND OTHERS ALL THE TIME. RID: 9972
Click to report rating    9/4/08   1     3     3     1   Sorry, but I would drive across the city before ever venturing back in their doors. The emphasis seems to be on wallets and between what I (and others I have spoken to) have experienced, never again. RID: 9875
Click to report rating    6/28/08   5     5     4     5   I have been using Calgary North Vet for over 20 years with my pets, the veterinarians genuinely care for your pets and will do everything in the best interest of your pet! They have helped many of my pets over the years and even if I have ever had a problem with them, which have been very very few but of course will occur at times, the situation was remedied and I was very impressed with the way they handle everything! I definitely would and have been recommending them. RID: 9062
