My wife and I have been going to Richmond Animal Hospital since we moved to Richmond in 1982. We have always been very pleased with the service we received the entire time without exception. Mike Schaufele took over the clinic about 30 years ago, and is the best vet we could possibly ask for. Mike has visted our home on several occasions to care for our cats, and has also rushed into the hospital on Sundays when we had an emergency. He is truly an amazing vet, and I wouldn’t consider trusting my pets with anyone else. Alexine Crofts has also cared for our cats many times, and has always been fantastic. Very caring, competent, and thorough. We’ve also noticed that when one of our pets has had some difficulties, all the vets are aware of it so they’re ready in case they have to step in. Finally, all the support staff are stellar. The front desk staff are always friendly and caring, and I feel like I’m with family when I’m speaking with them. Best vet ever!!!

I have been bringing my shepherd puppy to this clinic since she was 10 weeks old. She is now 9 months old and in this time we have had a couple of scary medical situations arise that thank goodness turned out for the best.I can tell you that the doctors have shown nothing but compassion for her and for us thru these terrifying times. I wouldn't take her anywhere else.

Dr. Crofts was extremely dismissive and rude towards me and towards my dog, who she didn't acknowledge at any point during our visit. She "pulled out a couple teeth" but apparently left the roots in! My dog's roots got infected as diagnosed by another vet (I saw the Xrays) and he had to pull out those roots. Dr. Crofts is utterly incompetent, disrespectful and would rather spend her time flirting with a male client in the waiting room than give my dog the time of day, or proper veterinary care. This infection could have led to an organ infection! Will never go back.

Grossly over inflated pricing. They charge for every little thing and detail. Have had dogs for over 40 years will not use Richmond Animal Hospital again. It is so unfortunate that so many vets take advantage of our emotional attachments to our pets and exploit their prices accordingly. Not all but a lot.

Vets are ok, punctuality is not great. Waiting space is cramped. The customer service from the admin staff is varied. Some are quite good, while others could use improvement (don't communicate to you when you are waiting to pay or see a vet because they are busy or ???) The services here are seriously overpriced. I was charged $70 plus tax for a 10 minute consultation for an ear infection. I had told them over the phone when booking the appt that it was an ear infection, which I would have assumed they would have booked a short appt for since it is a recurrent sort of thing. But maybe $70 is the price for a short appt?? The consultation plus meds (15 ml bottle of antibiotic) added up to $140. Price gouging I think. I won't be going back as it seems that with a quick internet search, I can find a vet at a more reasonable price. Bye bye Richmond Animal Hospital.

Dr.Crofts wasn't thorough at all during the meta exam: no eye checkup, no ear checkup. Just asked a few questions about diet and litter box. Very brief for an exam charged more than 50 dollars. Plus we went for a condition regarding my cat's paw - another 50 dollars. Total time spent was around 10 minutes and nothing was solved. Half-assed attitudes. Long wait before and after appointment. No proper breakdown of what they charge for on the receipt. Total cost? $117 for ten minutes. Wasn't worth traumatizing my cat. Won't be seeing her again.

The staffs were all very friendly and compassionate. The only negative is that they seem to have increased their prices every year. A routine check up becomes more and more expensive each time. Doctors are good, but not the best.

I am very particular about where I take my feline children. The service here is outstanding. You're paying for the high level of expertise. When your cat is put under general to remove a rotten tooth you want someone who is very knowledgeable and has done this many times before, assisted by experienced vet techs and other vets. As for the dated facilities - this clinic is in a heritage building - which may look old - but it's heritage and we should be thanking the clinic for saving it. So much of Richmond's heritage has been demolished - and here Dr. S. and staff have saved it. Everyone I know who has taken their pet here has loved the service and the kind, caring staff. I rate them a solid 10/10.

I like the staff here however their prices have been going through the roof. They told me that cats shouldn't eat raw because it is just like a person eating raw... uh, we aren't carnivores! Cats have short digestive tracts to handle raw meat and it's what cats eat in the wild. What they are meant to eat. That was outrageous. Their back rooms with sick pets look like they're from the 50's and haven't been updated since. One cat they wanted to test for FIV/FeLV, the cat had already been tested a year ago. They only decided against it when I pointed that out. They then kept the cat overnight without a lot of discussion for other options like taking fluids home. They also wanted to give me prescription food for a cat when its urinalysis came back normal. Prescription food is NOT a cure-all unless the cat has a pH imbalance. REALLY question what they are suggesting, if you think something's unnecessary save that 500+ dollars for when it's really needed.

I only visited this place a couple of times, not planning to go back. The dr and staff are polite and seems like knowledgable. One thing that bothered me was that one staff picked up my dog, which initially I thought he was gonna pet her, and I was fine with that, my dog loves stranger and I don't mind the staff being friendly. But then he dispeared to the back for about 10mims with my puppy without asking my permission.... I sat at the waiting area anxiously by myself, I didn't see my puppy again until he took me to the exam room. And the vet was there with my puppy. Maybe because I am a new parent, I found it was very uncomfortable that someone just took her away without asking for permission.

My first time visiting this clinic with my 6 year old dog. I just moved into the area. I called earlier to make an appointment. I was greeted as soon as we got in. Reception staff are friendly. After filling up a form, I waited for the doctor to see us. Another person came in carrying his dog in his arms. The dog seems to be in critical condition. They saw the dog immediately. I had to wait an extra 30 minutes but I didn't care. I hope that if something similar happens to us, that they will show the same urgency they showed to that family. These people showed great compassion.

The veterinarians at this clinic are very good as well as the staff. Its unfortunate though that the customer care of office management is severely lacking. The prices are being raised higher and higher making this clinic ridiculously higher in cost than other veterinary clinics with the same level of care. After being with the clinic for over 12 years, i raised my concerns to the office manager who very rudely told me that they're actually thinking of increasing the prices even more to go somewhere else then. Nice, after being a loyal customer for over 12 plus years.

I'm surprised at some of the bad reviews here because my experiences have been great. Dr. Crofts is a very caring, compassionate person. She made a house-call at my home to perform euthanasia on my senior cat and her kind presence and composure really helped with the pain of losing my cat. She helped make it a peaceful, meaningful experience. You know, vet care is like auto care. If you go to one auto shop, they may be overly zealous and recommend you doing tons of things that another more conservative auto shop would say aren't necessary - neither is "wrong". If you want you car to be running perfectly for years, you probably want to be proactive and pay for preventative care. Same with health/vet care. You know what I mean? They're doctors: they're going to recommend the very best care for your pet. If you want to cheap-out on vet care, go somewhere else but you get what you pay for. They are a little pricier but I've never been unhappy with their work.

I love the Richmond Animal Hospital. I have been bringing my pets there for 12 yers. My cat was recently diagnosed with cancer. They helped me through his diagnosis. They also came up with a treatment plan that I was comfortable with. When it was time to let him go, they were very compassionate. I am greatful for that. Their facility is a bit outdated, but it sounds like they are in the works of a renovation. They cost a bit more, but it is well worth it. Don't let the ratings that are money related scare you. Good veterinary care is worth paying for.

This place is a rip off, avoid it like the plague. They quoted me last year for dog teeth cleaning for over $1000. I just got a second opinion last week. This vet said my dog did not need his teeth cleaned. It would be five minutes of work to clean. Dr. Crofts also told me my dog's heart murmur progressed from a stage 2 to stage 4 in three years. This new vet said he is stage 2 at most. These people take advantage of people's love for their pets. Unfortunately some people get pressured into doing what they say and pay it. Avoid this place and save yourself some money.

Took my dog in for a reproductive infection. They pressured us into a surgery the next day. Initial estimate was around $800-900. Already twice the going rate. Strangely the bill kept climbing with general charges that couldn't be explained. Even after we paid the final balance, they still added charges. They also wanted to keep our dog for three days for observation. No way. How is anyone observing them when everyone has gone home for the night. Our dog was better off at home. My advice, get a second oponion and don't be pressured as there are many other fine vets in Richmond.

BAD BAD PLACE. The only thing they are good at is maximizing the bill you pay. They told me my dog have infection due to tartar buildup. But my dog just had her vaccine a month ago. Everytime I go in they charge me a bill for heath check. Won't they detect such infection during the health check? I complained to them and the answer I get is that my pet would not let him check thoroughly so he might have missed out. WHAT KIND OF ANSWER IS THAT!!! The solution they gave me was an operation that costs $1200 to remove my dog's upper and lower teeth. She is only 5 years old and already removing her teeth. Antibiotics Richmond animal hospital sold me may be able to cure the infection. But instead, they scheduled the operation the following day after they sold me the antibiotics. THEN WHAT IS THE POINT OF ANTIBIOTICS. So I could pay more? All I want is the health of my dog no matter how much it cost. But paying $1200 to remove her healthy teeth is definitely not the case!

Avoid this place! Not only was the facilities a little run-down, Dr Ricky Lis treated my cat, who had urinary tract infection. They kept my cat in for an overnight visit (which I objected to) - to me that was unnecessary was a ploy to charge me $ b/c nobody was there at night anyway! They gave my cat one type of antibiotic - and 10 days + one hefty bill later my cat still had the infection. So they switched & put my cat on another antibiotic - I asked why was the first one not working? They said they didn't know which bacteria strain it was, so it was A TRIAL AND ERROR PROCESS in the beginning - they gave my cat an antibiotic, didn't work so they try another one. Yeah this came the vet himself! If the 2nd antibiotic didn't work they'll give her another one? WTF is this?? Animal testing when I pay $1000 for them to take care / cure my sick cat? He seemed more interested in hitting up a conversation w/ me + taking my $ then helping my poor sick kitty! AVOID AVOID!

Horrible place. My dog was diagnosed diabetic and had anorexia and depression issues due to the family going away for vacation. Moved to this office because it was much closer than the initial office that he was taken to. I had spent $800+ in less than a month and his conditions got worse. I asked about cataracts forming and Dr. Schaufle said not to worry, just to have him go fully blind few weeks later. Wouldn't release ANY insulin to me when I went in due to accidentally dropping the vial, unless I went for another blood test that costs $400. For a diabetic dog, this is like telling him to die. Adds other examinations and bills them. Also after blood tests my dog always came out traumatized, shaking like a leaf and blood running down his leg. When my dog was being slightly aggressive - never has been to other vets, that says something, and they totally manhandled my dog roughly. Staff is also rude and unhelpful. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.

The charges are a bit on the high side. Staff are knowledgeable. They have different vets who specialize in different animals so be sure to know which one are suitable for your kind of animals. The facility is okay but not the best.

I've been bringing my cats to this clinic for 12 years. The doctors and staff there are very caring and knowledgeable. They are always willing to squeeze me in or answer my questions. There prices may seem higher that the low cost vets that are out there, but there service is worth it. I've dealt with a few other clinics over the years and none compare to the great service I've received at Richmond Animal Hospital.

I brought my dogs to Dr. Michael Schaufele for many years, he is very kind and attentive. But in the past few years, their fees kept going up and up... I don't know why. I like Dr. Michael but because of the price hike, I will need to go somewhere else because I can no longer afford the enormous vet bill.

I went during the week to get some info about vaccines for my new kitten and the girl working the afternoon shift did not know anything about protocols, she was very rude, she keeped throwing the clinic cat from the counter to the floor in a aggressive way. I do not feel confortable bringing my cat there if this is how they treat animals.

You don't realize how important an animal doctor is until your animal companion gets gravely ill. They just saved my dog from a critical condition.I said my dog is VERY ill and I couldn't get appo until next morning at other hospital. Richmond Animal Hospital squeezed us in between their tight schedule and admitted my dog right a way. Thanks to them, he is recovering. Doctors are very helpful and informative, they always give us the update quickly. You may go to other hospital if you want to save a few bucks here and there, but if you really want to save your companion, this is the place to go.I paid BIG bucks, but after seeing what they have done for my dog, I don't feel it was expensive.

Way too expensive to continue going here. Had to switch to vet located on No. 2 Road, and vet at Petcetera. Both these vets were comparable. Service lacking a little than Richmond Animal Hospital, but simply can't afford their services anymore.

This vet charges way too much for his services compared to other vets in the area. Before he took over this vet office, the prices were very reasonable and service impeccable. He tries to upsell everything which then brings the costs up and for somebody that doesn't know any better, not a very good experience. Definitely shop around for the services and as it is true, you get what you pay for, just look around.
